J. Tamarack Gargle, who is the villain and landlord of the heroine’s home, threatens to evict the entire family unless Lily Lackamoney, the heroine, promises to marry him. Perplexed as what to do, Lily decides to go to the big city to find the hero, Balderdash Trustworthy, who is in the city trying to find a rich friend that will help in the plight of the Lackamoneys. The first person that Lily meets is Maxine Mascarra, the villainess. Gargle employs Maxine to help him get rid of Trustworthy. They unknowingly attempt to “polish off” a wrong victim. Eventually they manage to dump Trustworthy into the river. When Maxine asks Gargle to pay her off for her help, he casts her aside. -

ariel: a review of international english literature ISSN 0004-1327 Vol. 43 No. 4 Pages 97–122 Copyright © 2013 Masks Or Souls?: Halide Edib’s Politics and Her Pacifism as a Playwright Özlem Ezer Abstract: In this article, I discuss Halide Edib’s play Masks or Souls? (MOS) as anti-war literature by a Turkish female intellec- tual and activist who lived between the two World Wars. The ar- ticle provides a more complete portrayal of Edib, who has often been reduced to a nationalist novelist. I also argue that MOS con- tains autobiographical insights. There is evidence in MOS, for ex- ample, that Edib became a pacifist on the eve of the Second World War. Another war Edib fought was against the ideas and ideologies within the military and intellectual circles of Turkey. Through the actions and comments of several characters in the play, Edib also criticizes the reforms and westernization processes that took place immediately after the declaration of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Finally, I counter the neglect this play has suffered by calling into question some of the nation- and region-based hierarchies preva- lent in literary studies. In 1953, Halide Edib,1 a famous Turkish novelist, wrote a play in English called Masks or Souls? (MOS henceforth), based on an earlier, Turkish version of her play.2 The play offers an extensive, cynical cri- tique of ideologies of some contemporaneous governments (those of Turkey and Europe in particular) and the affairs that had been taking place in several countries like the founding of the League of Nations (which she supported) and some extreme right-wing movements (which she did not). -

Shattered Moments: The Fall from My 30-Foot Pedestal Brooke McKenzie Sroufe Faculty Advisor: Margaret Sartor Graduate Liberal Studies April 2015 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Graduate Liberal Studies in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Brooke McKenzie Sroufe 2015 Abstract Part One of my final project consists of a series of creative non-fiction stories detailing a traumatic accident I experienced in 2009. The stories examine my physical and emotional recovery. I have also written stories about my strongest childhood memories to explore the events that helped shape the beliefs I held at the time of my accident. The stories are not linear, but span from my childhood to the three years following my accident. Through these stories, I hope to contribute to greater conversations about trauma, emerging adulthood, and identity— particularly among young people. Part Two of the project analyzes the question of trauma and the necessity of narrative following trauma. I break this section of the project into three short essays addressing different aspects of trauma and narrative: a history of trauma, the need for memoir, and posttraumatic growth. I reference three larger works within these essays and relate the authors’ arguments and theories to my traumatic experience and to the process of writing my stories. In addition to these written parts, I include personal photographs throughout the project. These pictures, like my stories, are not linear. They are visual pieces of my shattered life puzzle, showing me before and after my fall from the 30-foot pedestal I’d created for myself. - 
												
												The Lily Pool, the Mirrors, and the Outsiders: Envisioning Home and England in Virginia Woolf's Between the Acts
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 38.1 March 2012: 249-275 The Lily Pool, the Mirrors, and the Outsiders: Envisioning Home and England in Virginia Woolf’s Between the Acts Ching-fang Tseng Department of English National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan Abstract Written against the historical context of the threats of fascism and World War II, Between the Acts’s portrayal of rural England that highlights its traditional way of life, the everlasting rural landscape, and the pageant then in vogue seemingly echoes the prevailing national imagination during the war-crisis years. Rather than replicating the nostalgic ruralist vision of England on the verge of war, the novel not only furthers Woolf’s critique of the dictators in England in Three Guineas, but also enacts the essay’s visionary idea of the “Outsiders’ Society” in the setting of the English country. A prominent figure in Between the Acts is the cultivated observer in rural England, who is there to apprehend landscape as well as the universal evolutionary order. Encapsulating the ocularized social power of the ruling landowning class, he embodies Englishness and “civilization” as the apex of the developmental progress of humankind. Woolf responds to such Englishness by positing episodes in the novel involving La Trobe’s village pageant. The pageant invokes an “Outsiders’ Society” composed of heterogeneous, anonymous private spectators in resistance to the hegemonic perception of the gentry-audience, thus making the latter think home landscape, “Ourselves,” and civilization in a different light. At the same time, the “Outsiders’ Society” is also enacted through Between the Acts’s multi-layered, open-ended, and self-reflexive form, which disallows closure and totality of meaning and predominance of the authorial vision. -

BIOGRAPHY COLIN O’DONOGHUE ‘Gordon “Gordo” Cooper’ Colin O’Donoghue plays the role of original Mercury 7 astronaut ‘Gordon “Gordo” Cooper’ in National Geographic’s original scripted series THE RIGHT STUFF on Disney+, based on Tom Wolfe’s bestselling nonfiction series, which dramatically explores the early days of the NASA space program. A native of Drogheda, Ireland, and a graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Colin’s early career consisted of predominately theater and television work in Ireland and the UK. In 2003, Colin won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best New Talent for his role as ‘Norman’ in the made-for-TV movie “Home For Christmas.” Soon after, he had stints on “Proof,” “Fair City,” the mini-series “Rebel Heart” and “The Clinic” for Irish Television. He appeared in Season 3 of the hit Showtime series “The Tudors” as ‘Duke Philip of Bavaria,’ where he caught the eye of many industry followers. In 2010, Colin decided to head to Hollywood, where he instantly landed the lead role of ‘Michael Kovak’ and worked alongside Academy-Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins in the New Line Cinema feature “The Rite,” directed by Mikael Hafstrom. The following year, he starred in the ABC pilot “Identity,” opposite Angela Bassett for executive producer Mark Gordon (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds,” “Private Practice”), and booked the co-lead opposite BAFTA winner Noel Clarke in Johannes Roberts’ sci-fi film “Storage 24” for Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. In 2012, Colin booked a series regular role on ABC’s hit series “Once Upon A Time” and played fan-favorite ‘Captain Hook,’ which was created by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (“Lost,” “Felicity”).
