I can’t remember meeting anyone who doesn’t have some kind of opinion when it comes to the supernatural. Whether they roll their eyes and think the whole thing is utter nonsense or they leap to regale a story of an unforgettable first-hand encounter, everyone has thoughts on the topic if prompted (and often if not). The paranormal is a fascinating world to explore and I intend to do so with an open mind, but not a naïve one! Most Haunted brings with it a huge audience and much like when a movie is made based on a popular TV Show or Comic Book, it’s of crucial importance not to alienate or indeed offend, the already in-built fan base. Right from the moment we announce in the press that we’re making Most Haunted the movie not only based on the TV show but also featuring prominent characters from the show (Yvette Fielding for example), we’re going to be subjected to intense scrutiny from the fans. This is something I welcome, it excites me; the fans will help to dramatically raise the profile of the film and increase anticipation and I have every confidence of delivering a cinematic experience they’ll never forget. It’s important to find the balance, understand the essence of what Most Haunted provides that has interested so many millions of people around the world but at the same time, I won’t allow the creative integrity of the film to be compromised. One of the many wonderful opportunities on this film is that we’ll appeal to an extremely wide demographic; we have the typically middle-aged viewers who are already fans of the show, alongside a much younger demographic who are not necessarily aware of the brand but will tick the boxes of a film they’d typically be attracted to. Hence the importance of finding a balance to allow the film to accommodate all of its viewers. I’m going to shoot on anamorphic lenses which will give the film an instant cinematic feel (think how Steven Spielberg shot Jurassic Park for example), I think it’s vital to immediately distinguish ourselves from the TV Show, we’re a movie and we’ll feel like a movie. Additionally, anamorphic lenses give us an instantly expensive and glossy feel; if we’re going to put Hollywood quality content on the screen, it’s crucial that we look like a Hollywood movie! This film provides a challenge, no doubt about that, but when challenged we are capable of producing our best work and I have no doubt that we’ll create a movie that every single person involved with it, be they a floor runner or a producer, will be proud and grateful to have their name in the credits and be part of something special, unique and breath-taking.
