Our Visitors – Sheerwater

The London County Council started to build Sheerwater Estate in 1948, for families that wanted to move out of London and start a new life in Surrey. Around 1,380 houses were built at a cost of approximately £3 million. This prompted a community spirit from the early days, and football being the number one sport, came into effect when groups of men started having a kick around at the Sheerwater Recreation Ground, using their coats for goal posts. Sheerwater Football Club was founded in 1958 by early members of the club, the late John French (also player), Stan West, Ken May, Bill Hilleard, Herbert Taylor (also player), Syd Morris, Derrick Thomas, Jim McDermott and players Dennis Hill, John Murray, Micky Wedge, Chris Robinson, Jose Garcia, Tony Minchinton, Don Stevens, Michael French, Jim Kelly, to name a few. Sheerwater joined the local Woking & District League. We then progressed through the Divisions and obtained Intermediate status in the Surrey Intermediate (Western) League in the 1967-68 season. The club then progressed to senior level, and we were promoted to the Surrey Senior League for the 1972-73 season and a highest finish of 6th in the 1974-75 season. In 1978 following the loss of clubs to the London Spartan League, Hampshire clubs were admitted to the Surrey Senior League with the title of the competition eventually becoming the Combined Counties League. In 1981-82 the League had reached 22 members, and as a consequence was split into East and West divisions. In a dreadful season with only one win and one draw the club finished bottom of the East division, 16 points behind Clarion and both Sheerwater and Clarion were relegated to the newly formed Surrey . In our first season in this new league we had a highest position of 5th in 1982-83. However in 1984-85 we finished only above the bottom side Heath End Wanderers and another relegation followed. Unfortunately the vacancy at the lower level was a position in the Surrey Intermediate (Eastern) Division. Fortunately after one season in the Eastern Division we were allowed to transfer to the Surrey Combination Premier Division for the 1986-87 season, but we were relegated at the end of the season. After twice finishing third, we were Champions of Division One in 1989-90 and promoted to the Premier Division for 1990-91, finishing in a mid-table position. However in June 1991 The Surrey Combination and Surrey South Eastern Intermediate Leagues merged, but we were able to move sideways to the Surrey Intermediate (Western) League. This was only for one season as we achieved promotion back to the Surrey Premier League. Our stay was, however, for only one season as we finished above bottom club Ashtead, only on goal difference, and were relegated once more. Yet again this was only for one season. In 1994-95 we were back in the Surrey Premier League and finished 9th. After many discussions the Surrey Premier league became the first division of the Combined Counties league for the season 2003-04. We are still in the Division One League today, striving to maintain league standards with a small budget with few committee members and local helpers that maintain a good standard for the League. Although at present we are failing to meet the required Grade G with floodlights to stay in the League but we are part of the new Sheerwater Regeneration Programme that does not include a Recreation Ground or Athletic Club. We will be moving to a new facility on Sheerwater at the Bishop David Brown School in 2020 that will be up to the correct grading to continue in the Combined Counties League. Due to this delay the club has now agreed a two season ground share with Vanarama club Woking FC.

This Day in Football History:

5 January 1965 Happy Birthday to The Hard Man

On 5 January 1965, future Wimbledon defender and film star Vinnie Jones was born in .

Jones started his footballing career in 1984 with non-league Wealdstone and spent a season in before moving to Wimbledon in 1986. There, he was part of the rambunctious "" that won the 1988 FA Cup, the club's highest achievement. He moved to Leeds the following year, starting a journey that included stints at Sheffield United and Chelsea before returning to Wimbledon in 1992.

He earned a reputation as one of the game's great hard men, getting sent off 12 times in his career. His most notorious incident occurred in a match against Newcastle in 1987 when Jones unnerved by squeezing the young midfielder's testicles. The image was caught on film and became an iconic representation of Jones' style of play.

After leaving Wimbledon again in 1998, he served nine matches as player/manager of QPR before retiring. By that time, his film career was underway, starting with his breakout role as hard man "Big Chris" in 's 1998 film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

Despite his ongoing success as an actor, Jones played for US charity side Hollywood United and has expressed a desire to return to Leeds some day.

From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Sheerwater enjoy their short stay with us.

We're back after a Christmas break and our thanks go to my previous club Staines Lammas who brought a team here Wednesday night for a much-needed game to blow the cobwebs away.

A big game today as 2nd face 3rd, two teams that try to play attractive football and two well run clubs. Credit must go to both of us for being in the positions we are at this stage of the season. We've played or watched 15 of our Division One opponents so far this season and we are under no illusion that Sheerwater will provide one of, if not the toughest, test of the campaign so far. Neither team will be out of the promotion race with a defeat today but if there is a winner, they will take a massive confidence boost heading into an important stage of the season. It goes without saying that we will be giving it everything we have to get an important 3 points today.

Happy New Year to all Yellows followers, thank you for your support and we hope to bring success back to the club in 2019.

Adam

Meet The Players: Ashley Hitchinson

Age: 21 Position: Right Back

Fun fact: Ash hasn’t been seen at Bedfont since new full back Bill Roach put in a MoM performance on his debut, Ashley’s representatives deny any correlation, but rumours are flying he is looking elsewhere.

We get to know a little bit more about Ashley...

What is your favourite football memory? Either in the Whitton town days, scored the winner in a tournament final, or when I came Quick-fire round: on and bagged a goal in the AFC Whitton final v Heathrow Flyers and knee-slided to the Nike or Adidas ? Nike. bench. Limbs. Yellow or Red kit? Yellow. Best team you’ve ever been a part of other than this current Bedfont squad Blonde or Brunette? Blonde. (obviously)? Other than when I played for Brentford (if you didn't already know) Whitton League or Cup? League. Town Youth. Joe Jackson spraying it, Bonnichon bagging goals, me running down Xbox or PlayStation? PlayStation the wing and Paul Nunn with his fringe. Tuesday nights or Saturday Afternoons? Most likely to be a future gaffer? Saturday afternoons. Noah Kibreab. Very, very, very knowledgeable man! Boobs or bum? Boobs to play with, bum to look at! Slowest in the squad? Got to be between JP and Ells.

Biggest moaner in the team? Geezer been getting away with it for weeks. ELLIOTT HAYDEN. Or Bill to be fair, throws strops all day long.

If you could pick one Bedfont player for your 5aside team who would it be and why? My mate Bill Nutbeam. Very versatile.. great to have a player like that in a 5 a side team.

Who has the best first touch in the team? Ross Nunn, obviously.

Who would you not want a scrap with in the squad? Cameron, however rumour has it he doesn't want it and doesn't usually get involved in that sort of stuff. Ashley in action on the pitch © Jo Ginger.

Thanks to Ashley. Next up we meet new boy Billy Roach.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted in the 1974 Derby County Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook. Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of programmes collected throughout the years. He is an iconic figure for me - some of my first memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself. Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search is on for his history and collecting programmes.

Tony Candland.
