Outlook As coach Doug Stursma enters into the 2004 season, he sees a team who is young but competitive. The 10-player roster is comprised of a nucleus of six sophomores and three juniors and one senior. Central returns seven letterwinners from last season’s 10-man squad. Central posted an 11-8 mark last year and coach Doug Stursma believes this team is better than that. “It’s good to be young and still compete in the top of the conference,” he said. “I have a good feeling about where we are sitting right now and the future.” Sophomore Nick Cochrane, co-captain, is one of the top players in the league and Stursma thinks he can play with just about anybody. “Outside of Nick Barnes (Coe), Nick (Cochrane) can play with the rest of the number ones in the conference,” said Stursma. “He’s really developed and I think he’s ready to have a great season.” Cochrane made it to the quarterfinals at last year’s Iowa Conference championships in Flight A. He finished the season with a 15-11 record. The Dutch lineup will most likely be Cochrane at number one in both singles and doubles. Stursma looks for junior co-captain Aaron Enderlin to step in the number two singles position. Others in the Dutch lineup could include junior Jason Ford, sophomores Ryan Dierks, David Brondyke, Kris Walters, and junior Adam Ruggle. Also vying for time on the court are senior Chris Griner, junior Tim Schindlbeck, and sophomore Ryan Ooms. “Right now we are experimenting with doubles,” Stursma said. “We’re just trying to get a feel as to what combination we want to use and what works best.” With 15 Iowa Conference titles and six top-two league finishes in the past eight years, Central tennis has a strong tradition. Yet placing third in last year’s Iowa Conference championship is not a small feat. Central finished third to runner- up Luther and eventual champion Coe who is ranked 17th in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll. Coe is a heavy favorite to win the league title but after that, nothing is certain. Stursma looks for a battle between the Dutch and Luther for second place although a much improved Wartburg team shouldn’t be counted out. “Simpson and Wartburg will be in the mix as well,” Stursma said. “Really, you can’t count out anyone. You just never know.” The schedule features some difficult match-ups including some Div. II and NAIA schools. “This year’s schedule is at about the same caliber of the past couple of years,” Stursma said. “Probably one of the main differences is that we may not be playing quite as strong of Div. III schools as we have in the past but that doesn’t mean we aren’t facing quality competition. We are going to face more teams this year who have scholarships, more Div. II and NAIA teams.” “The guys are really working hard and they are coming along nicely,” Stursma said. “There’s steady improvement and I think we’re going to have a good competitive season.”
