  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge to Develop and Maintain Fire Regimes
2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Frank K. Lake for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences presented on May 10, 2007. Title: Traditional Ecological Knowledge to Develop and Maintain Fire Regimes in Northwestern California, Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion: Management and Restoration of Culturally Significant Habitats Abstract approved: ________________________________________________________ Steve R. Radosevich The use of Native American fire regimes evolved in the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion over millennia. A mixture of Native American and Euro-American socio- cultural management has developed from adaptations to climate, topography, ecological processes, and land use practices. This research incorporates Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) to partially examine the role of tribal fire uses and ethnobotany. Research methods use an interdisciplinary approach to characterize fuels and fire management issues in culturally significant riparian and terrestrial habitats. Tribal fuels and fire management practices were investigated. Understanding past tribal fire management systems is needed to place contemporary Native American fuels and fire management issues in to context for government agencies and private interest that have altered tribal opportunities to continue fire uses. This study examined fire effects on sandbar willow (Salix exigua) in valley riparian zones along the lower mid-Klamath River. Prescribed fire was used to induce sprouting of sandbar willow and reduce insect populations to improve basket material quantity and quality. Results indicate that flooding had greater affects on the structure, composition, and abundance of vegetation and fuels than prescribed fire. A second 3 experiment to compare the effect of propane burning and pruning sandbar willow indicated that propane burning was less effective than pruning to improve stem morphology for basket weaving.

  • Seth Green Father of Fish Culture
Edited by DEXTER PERKINS, City Historian and BLAKE MCKELVEY, Assistant City Historian Vol. VI JULY, 1944 No. 3 Seth Green Father of Fish Culture By SYLVIA R. BLACK Background Over 125 years ago, Adonijah Green, farmer, cleared the woods on the present site of Culver Road and Empire Boulevard. He had come here with his wife a few years before 1817, either directly from England or from the New England States, knowing that the rich earth of the Genesee country, bearing huge forests, could be made produc- tive. Here he hewed the hard timber, which was abundant in the forest, and built his one-story, square, log cabin. It was a primitive home, with rough boards for a floor, a door fastened by a wooden latch with string, and a chimney made of sticks and plastered with clay. The many cracks were stuffed with sticks and clay to keep out the wind and rain. Two small square windows admitted light. In this primitive home a son, Seth, destined to become famous, to meet with Presidents and to be honored by foreign countries, was born on March 19, 1817. Seth was trained very early in the ways of a pioneer farmer’s son-how to sow wheat and corn and how to thresh the grain with flails. Seth learned quickly, and it was not long before Adonijah could rely on him to help trap the small animals so abund- ant in the forest, and to reel in a good-sized fish. During the winter, dressed in his warm buckskin breeches and flaxen shirts made by Mrs.

  • “It's All in My Head.”
“It’s All in My Head.” The Top 300 Comedy Films of All-Time (in my opinion) my (in Esma relda Villa Lobos An Introduction Although the following is what I hope to be a comprehensive study guide on, in my opinion, the greatest comedy films of all time, if you happen to disagree with any of my critiques or choices throughout the course of reading this novel, please rest assured that this is by no means the last of these collections that I will assemble throughout my life and career. What started out as a list of ten became a list of twenty, twenty became fifty, fifty became one fifty, two hundred, two fifty and then finally three hundred. The pages are organized in descending order because what is the fun in giving away the best part fresh out the gate? I must admit that my final choices are altogether unsurprising, but frankly there is just no argument when it comes to the best of the best. I am certain your jaw will drop to the ground when you see some of the films that I have omitted (hint: you won’t find “Princess Bride” anywhere on this list) and I am also certain others will have you scratching your head and wondering “what?!” There are plenty of films on here that were bashed by “day-to-day” critics upon the time of their release, but since I am a “bigger picture” type of analyst, I find that these films, over time, show their worth and merit. If at any point in time you find yourself wondering, “how can I watch some of these films?” Well, if they aren’t available on Netflix, nine times out of ten you can rent them on Vudu for $2.99-$3.99 apiece.
