The Demographics of North West Leicestershire Total Resident Population Table 1 below illustrates that the District’s population stood at 97,200 in 2015 – this was 22.7% higher than in 1981 (earliest when comparable statistics are available). This increase is well above the GB population growth rate of 15.4% in the same period, though more in line with the Leicestershire figure. Of the seven Leicestershire Districts, NWL saw the third lowest population growth over the 1981 – 2015 period. Between 2014 and 2015 the District’s population grew by 1.4% - one of the highest growth figures in Leicestershire, and again, significantly higher than the East Midlands and GB average growth rates. With regard the percentage of the County population by District and the change since 1981, North West’s share has fallen slightly to stand at 14.4% of the total County population. Other Leicestershire Districts also have a higher percentages of females with the exception of Charnwood. This can perhaps be attributed to the rising average age of residents, whereby women tend to live longer than men do. The current life expectancy in North West Leicestershire, as of 2012, for women at birth is 82.72 and for men 78.85. These are the lowest life expectancy figures of the 7 Leicestershire districts but higher than both the East Midlands and British averages. Age Profile Table 2 shows the age profile of the District both in 1981 (when earliest comparable records started) and 2015, with the 2011 figure taken from the 2011 Census, which is more reliable than the Population Survey of 2015. These tables show that the largest band of the District’s population was aged 45 – 49 in 2015 whereas the largest band was 30 – 34 years in 1981. This group has seen a growth of 54.3%. The largest growth, not unsurprisingly, between 1981 and 2015, is in the Aged 85 and over, which experienced 283% growth from 600 individuals in 1981 to 2,300 in 2015. Table 4 which shows the Age Profile for Great Britain which also shows similar high rises for these older groups but at a lower growth rate than for the District. Nearly 40% of the District’s population are aged over 50 years compared to 36.4% for Great Britain. Tables 2, 3 and 4 below, show the current age profile of the population within North West Leicestershire and Great Britain. North West Leicestershire has an increasingly aging population, with 39.6% of the population over the age of 50. This is likely to increase further in the future Table 2 - NWL Age Profile 1981 % 0f Total 2011 % of Total 2015 % of Total % age Growth Under 1 1,000 1.3 1,000 1.1 1,000 1.0 0.0 Aged 1 – 4 4,100 5.2 4,400 4.7 4,300 4.5 4.9 Aged 5 – 9 5,700 7.2 5,500 5.8 5,800 6.0 1.8 Aged 10 – 14 6,300 8.0 5,600 6.0 5,500 5.7 -12.7 Aged 15 -19 5,700 7.2 5,500 5.8 5,600 5.7 -1.8 Aged 20 – 24 5,000 6.3 4,700 5.0 5,200 5.4 4.0 Aged 25 – 29 5,400 6.8 4,900 5.2 5,400 5.5 0.0 Aged 30 – 34 6,600 8.4 5,200 5.5 5,500 5.7 -16.7 Aged 35 – 39 6,100 7.7 6,400 6.8 5,600 5.7 -8.2 Aged 40 – 44 4,600 5.8 7,600 8.1 7,100 7.3 54.3 Aged 45 – 49 4,300 5.4 7,500 8.0 7,800 8.0 81.4 Aged 50 – 54 4.500 5.7 6,400 6.9 7,500 7.7 66.7 Aged 55 – 59 4,700 5.9 5,900 6.3 6,200 6.4 31.9 Aged 60 – 64 4,200 5.3 6,500 6.9 5,900 6.0 40.5 Aged 65 – 69 3,900 4.9 5,400 5.8 6,400 6.6 64.1 Aged 70 – 74 3,100 3.9 3,800 4.0 4,700 4.8 51.6 Aged 75 – 79 2,200 2.8 3,000 3.2 3,300 3.4 50.0 Aged 80 – 84 1,100 1.4 2,200 2.4 2,300 2.4 109.1 Aged 85+ 600 0.8 2,100 2.3 2,300 2.3 283.3 Total 79,100 100.0 93,600 100.0 97,400 100.0 23.1 Source: ONS Population Census and Mid-Year Population estimates Table 3 - GB Age Profile 1981 % 0f Total 2011 % of Total 2015 % of Total % age Growth Under 1 702,600 1.3 775,800 1.3 752,500 1.2 7.1 Aged 1 – 4 2,654,200 4.8 3,025,000 4.9 3,149,300 5.0 18.7 Aged 5 – 9 3,544,000 6.5 3,424,900 5.6 3,829,600 6.1 8.1 Aged 10 – 14 4,321,400 7.9 3,534,300 5.7 3,437,400 5.4 -20.5 Aged 15 -19 4,589,100 8.4 3,848,000 6.3 3,703,300 5.9 -19.3 Aged 20 – 24 4,159,100 7.6 4,174,400 6.8 4,174,100 6.6 0.4 Aged 25 – 29 3,726,800 6.8 4,189,200 6.8 4,316,900 6.8 15.8 Aged 30 – 34 4,083,300 7.4 4,028,100 6.6 4,257,900 6.7 4.3 Aged 35 – 39 3,495,500 6.4 4,039,200 6.6 3,961,700 6.3 13.3 Aged 40 – 44 3,103,400 5.7 4,488,000 7.3 4,176,200 6.6 34.6 Aged 45 – 49 3,013,300 5.5 4,523,500 7.4 4,499,300 7.1 49.3 Aged 50 – 54 3,103,600 5.7 4,002,300 6.5 4,436,000 7.0 42.9 Aged 55 – 59 3,196,300 5.8 3,522,500 5.7 3,838,300 6.1 20.1 Aged 60 – 64 2,867,100 5.2 3,703,200 6.0 3,406,600 5.4 18.8 Aged 65 – 69 2,738,100 5.0 2,990,400 4.9 3,525,800 5.6 28.8 Aged 70 – 74 2,340,700 4.3 2,389,300 3.9 2,651,400 4.2 13.3 Aged 75 – 79 1,673,000 3.1 1,966,400 3.2 2,107,200 3.3 26.0 Aged 80 – 84 947,000 1.7 1,470,700 2.4 1,544,600 2.4 63.1 Aged 85+ 589,200 1.1 1,375,700 2.2 1,490,400 2.4 153.0 Total 54,847,700 100.0 61,470,900 100.0 63,258,500 100.0 15.3 Source: ONS Population Census and Mid-Year Population estimates Table 4 - Net Migration to North West Leicestershire Migration by Age 2011 Net Migration 2001 Net Migration Difference All People 327 647 320 Age 0 to 4 115 119 4 Age 5 to 15 65 139 74 Age 16 to 19 -317 -164 153 Age 20 to 24 -10 -43 -33 Age 25 to 34 183 254 71 Age 35 to 49 152 273 121 Age 50 to 64 89 75 -14 Age 65 to 74 21 17 -4 Age 75 + 29 -23 -52 Source: ONS 2001 & 2011 Census Migration in North West Leicestershire District is broadly characterised by young adults moving away and new families moving in with children. Possible reasons for this migratory trend could be the general lack of further education opportunities within the district. Net migration fell between 2001 and 2011 (Table 4), which was predominantly due to an increase in the number of 16 to 24 year olds leaving. Ethnic Profile Table 5 shows that In North West Leicestershire, White British remain the majority ethnic group, representing over 95% of the total population – a significantly higher percentage than for Leicestershire; East Midlands or Great Britain.
