Press Information
Press information Leica presents the TL-System: The new camera system impresses with perfected features, unique design, precise, high-performance lenses and a range of functional accessories and technical equipment. Wetzlar, 8 November 2016. Building on the Leica T camera system, which has been continually advanced in terms speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its launch in 2014, the Leica TL embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with even more innovations and new aspects of its design. One of these innovations is the doubling of the size of its internal buffer memory to 32 GB. Other new features are improved autofocus, especially in AF-C mode, and optimised compatibility with lenses from other Leica camera systems. For instance, the Leica TL now supports SL-Lenses with OIS and allows the use of Leica R-System lenses in combination with the R-Adapter L. A new Leica TL app with revised functions offers additional options for sharing pictures by email or on social networks and is now available for the first time for Android as well as iOS devices. The Leica TL will in available in three colour options from the date of launch: the silver and black versions are identical in design and construction, while the titanium-coloured option is distinguished by a bevelled edge (chamfer) to the top and bottom plates. Functional camera accessories, such as the new high-quality protectors in Nappa leather, which can stay on the camera when changing the battery, and colour-coordinated carrying straps in stone-grey, black, red and cemento, round off the TL system portfolio. -

The focus of Leica’s appearance at photokina 2018 in Cologne is not only set on the extremely diverse product portfolio of the traditional manufacturer from Wetzlar, but also on the Leitz Park itself. At Leica, everything has always revolved around the picture, the school of visualisation, the history of photography, the vibrancy of photographic culture and the people behind the cameras – in other words, DAS WESENTLICHE. Since the opening of the Leitz Park complex on 15 June 2018, all this is now a visible and tangible experience. In the open-plan, newly conceived Leica stand in Hall 2.2, visitors can find information and comprehensive advice about the broad spectrum of Leica products and services for all photographic applications and scenarios. The demonstration area has now been split into thematic areas to provide easier orientation for professionals, amateurs and other visitors interested in particular Leica products or services. While the ‘Professional’ area concentrates on the Leica S and its lenses and products from Sinar Photography, the ‘Systems’ area focuses on the Leica SL, the Leica M and the APS-C cameras of the Leica CL and Leica TL systems – and, of course, the full range of corresponding Leica precision lenses. The ‘Compact’ area is dedicated to the Leica Q, Leica D-Lux, Leica V-Lux, Leica X-U and Leica C-Lux cameras and the Leica Sofort instant picture camera. -

Olympus Has Fallen – Who’S Next?
Olympus has Fallen – Who’s next? In better days – The tough, compact OM-4Ti with the 50mm f1.2 Zuiko was an iconic film SLR of the late 1980s. In a move that will surprise few watchers of the camera industry, Olympus is selling their camera business to Japan Industrial Partners, a private equity group that specializes in helping troubled companies spin off insolvent businesses. JIP is most famous for having bought the VAIO computer business from Sony in 2014, which it spun off as a separate company that sells computers mostly in Japan, although a few models have made it to niche markets in other countries. In the press release, Olympus and JIP claim that the business will continue to make and sell cameras. It is unclear whether or not the Olympus brand name will survive on cameras, or whether that will be retained exclusively by the much larger medical equipment division (Olympus Imaging is about 6% of Olympus, a maker of medical and scientific equipment). The Zuiko and OM-D brands are specifically mentioned in the press release as going to the new company (which has the placeholder name NewCo in the release). Is what they’re calling NewCo in the press release viable? Can anyone run an independent camera company (that, oddly, also makes digital voice recorders) with annual sales of just under 50 billion Yen ($500 million)? It is the sixth largest player in the global interchangeable lens camera market, far behind Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm. Olympus’ camera business is about 10% the size of Canon’s or Sony’s by revenue, less than 15% the size of Nikon’s, and a little over 1/3 the size of Fujifilm’s. -

We see how Nikon’s D5 copes with ice-hockey boot camp Ice on the black sand beach at Jökulsárlón.raw ON THE ICE BEACH IT’S A DARK, SOMBRE WINTER’S DAY. The grey cloud is low, and the rain is steady, but the muted light is just perfect for the subject matter all around me, namely waves lapping around the artfully sculpted blocks of ice on the black sand. Now I’ve seen many images of this unique combination before – it’s an Icelandic photographic staple – but there’s no resisting the appeal of such stark, elemental beauty. In fact it’s a beauty that is enhanced by the flat lighting, a cold scene of black and blue with simple graphic appeal. But as so often is the case here in Iceland the conditions are difficult: apart from the rain, salty spray is being driven inshore off the waves and onto my increasingly crusty camera, lens and filter. So be it, such adversity is now familiar. -
Press Information the Leica APS-C System
Press information The Leica APS-C System: high quality cameras and lenses that impress with compact size, stylish design, intuitive handling and exceptional picture quality. Wetzlar, 21 November 2017. Leica Camera AG has expanded its APS-C System product portfolio. The Leica TL2 has now been joined by the Leica CL, a further camera with a high- resolution, 24 MP, APS-C format sensor. Also new in the system is the Elmarit-TL 1:2.8/18 ASPH. lens. This wide-angle offers imaging performance and compact dimensions that ideally complement both cameras and is available not only in black, but also in a silver anodised version. Thanks to these new additions, the Leica APS-C System now offers a diversified portfolio of cameras and lenses that combine compact design with exceptional picture quality and enable users to experience a truly special kind of photography. Both camera models, the Leica CL and the Leica TL2, are made in Germany. In technical terms, they are equals, but could hardly be more different with regard to their design and handling concepts: reflecting the traditions of Leica in the form of the iconic Leica CL and, in contrast, the futuristic look of the Leica TL2. The Leica CL is an intuitive tool, with all essential controls located on its top plate. In addition to the high-resolution electronic viewfinder, there are two dials for setting the aperture, shutter speed ISO value, and exposure compensation. Everything is so conveniently located that photographs can be made without taking the camera from the eye. An additional display on the top plate instantly provides information about all relevant settings and exposure parameters. -
