This lecture seeks to better familiarize the audience with a small section of that neglected study by examining the relationship between the organs, composers, and compositions of the Centennial era (ca. 1870–1900) through the lens of organ registration. This particular period of nineteenth-century American music became the era when American composers developed a quintessentially American culture around the organ—a culture which would provide the foundation for much of what came after it. The main theme of the festival is “The Organ as a Mechanical Musical Marvel”. The organ is the biggest musical instrument of all, enclosed in an organ case, a “body” with its own architecture and a mechanical “nervous system”, through which the organist gives impulses that make the instrument sound. From the bellows, the organ’s lungs, air streams through wind channels to be stored in windchests and then led further up to the sounding parts, the pipes, which are constructed in various ways and made of different wooden and metal materials, in order to produce as varied sounds as possible. The organ pipes are grouped in ranks or stops similar to the instruments of an orchestra: singing principals, soft-toned flutes, colorful shawms, trumpets and trombones, in addition to brilliant mixtures; all of them contributing to the organ’s unique timbral and dynamic scope, with sounds ranging from poetic and ethereal to fanfare-like and powerful. During the first weekend, the focal point of the festival is early music and the experimental mechanical world of organs and related keyboard instruments, epitomized in Göteborg Baroque’s unique claviorganum, inaugurated in February 2019, and funded by the Stena Foundation. -

Karl Straube, Old Masters and Max Reger A Study in 20th Century Performance Practice By Bengt Hambraeus In 1904, the German organist Karl Straube published Alte Meister, an anthology in two volumes of organ music from the 17th and early 18th centuries (Peters 3065 a/b). The second of these volumes was replaced in 1929 with two new ones, with the same title (Peters 4301 a/b). The 3065a volume, which is still available, bears the dedication “Dem jungen Meister Max Reger”, This dedication can be understood in two ways. Either: to a young master composer being on a par with his classical colleagues from past centuries; or: to a young promising composer (Reger, by then 31 years old, had already written many of his most important organ works). We do not have to speculate about the intention of the dedication as such, only observe it in relation to three facts: (i) Both Straube and Reger were born in the same year (1873) and thus belong to the same generation; Reger died in 1916, Straube in 1950; since 1903 Straube had held different positions at the Thomas Church in Leipzig, until 1918 as an organist, and subsequently as choral director; furthermore he had been teaching the organ at the Leipzig Music Conservatory since 1907. (2) Since the beginning of the century, Straube had published a few practical editions of old and more recent organ music. Among the latter, we find his alternative versions to some already printed organ works by Reger. His various editions can easily allow us to understand how he himself may have performed the music, and how and why his interpretations became trendsetters for many of his students. -

A HISTORY OF THE ORGANS AT THE CHURCH OF ST. LUKE & THE EPIPHANY Organs at St. Luke's Church The first organ for St. Luke's Church was built in 1840 by E. & G. G. Hook of Boston. It had 3 manuals (keyboards) and pedals. The full organ comprised of 29 and a half stops, 1,552 pipes and was at the time noted to be one of the best church organs in Philadelphia. It was well received by visiting organists of the city. The new organ was built by E. & G. G. Hook & Hastings of Boston. Since the first organ was built, the company changed its name. The older Hook organ was traded in as part of the payment towards the new organ. There is a possibility that Hook & Hastings used some of the pipework from the previous organ but that can not be verified. That organ was of larger size with 51 stops.
