Am Beispiel von ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS betrachtet Barbara Flückiger das Werk des deutsch- amerikanischen Regisseurs erstmals im Kontext des Technicolor-Systems: Wie machte Sirk, dessen starke, charakteristische Handschrift zahlreiche Filmemacher/ innen beeinflusste, sich das kulturell und institutionell etablierte Technicolor zunutze, welche ästhetische Dimension und Wirkung erzielte er? Prof. Dr. Barbara Flückiger ist Professorin für Film- wissenschaft an der Universität Zürich und forscht unter anderem zu digitalen Medien, Filmfarbe und historischen Farbfilmprozessen. This dissertation investigates how history is used in historical documentary films, and ar- gues that the maker of such films constantly negotiates between cognitive, moral, and aes- thetic demands. In support of this contention a number of historical documentaries by Swedish historian-filmmakers Olle Häger and Hans Villius are discussed. Other historical documentaries supply additional examples. The analyses take into account both the produc- tion process and the representations themselves. The history culture and the social field of history production together form the conceptual framework for the study, and one of the aims is to analyse the role of professional historians in public life. The analyses show that different considerations compete and work together in the case of all documentaries, and figure at all stages of pre-production, production, and post-produc- tion. But different considerations have particular inuence at different stages in the produc- tion process and thus they are more or less important depending on where in the process the producer puts his emphasis on them.

    BO WIDERBERG’s LOST MASTERPIECE JOE HILL VICTORIAN TRADES HALL 54 VICTORIA ST CARLTON (CNR OF LYGON ST) CENTENARY THURSDAY 19 NOVEMBER AT 5.15 PM JOE HILL 1915-2015 CENTENARY CELEBRATION The critically acclaimed 1971 film Joe Hill, by renowned Swedish director Bo Widerberg (Elvira Madigan), won the Cannes Jury Prize in 1971. Lost and unavailable for many decades, it has now been restored and digitally remastered by the National Library of Sweden. We are offering you a unique opportunity to see this long-lost masterpiece. Joe Hill was a Swedish-American immigrant and itinerant labourer who fought for the rights and unity of workers. He was executed by firing squad in Utah on 19 November 1915, after being convicted of murder on circumstantial evidence. A poet, songwriter and IWW activist, he was commemorated by Joan Baez in the song ’I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill JOE HILL Last Night’. Bo Widerberg’s film dramatises Joe Hill’s life and impoverished, unorganised immigrant labour in the US during the early 20th century. His story is still relevant to workers today. The exhibition will be on view from September 10 through 18, 2009, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, and is organized by Jytte Jensen, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. Andersson, who rarely travels, will introduce the first six screenings in the series, providing a unique opportunity to hear the director talk about his films outside of Sweden. Andersson’s earliest films, rarely shown school projects from the 1960s, are related thematically and stylistically to the films of the then-influential Czech New Wave. His first feature, which he presented as his thesis at the Swedish Film Institute, is A Swedish Love Story (1970). With the gorgeous Swedish summer as a backdrop, the film portrays the pure love that arises between the daughter of a refrigerator salesman and the son of a car mechanic, offering a glimpse into the lives and homes of the people of the Swedish Social Democracy during its heyday.

    chapter 5 Activism, ideals and film criticism in 1970s Sweden Tytti Soila This is how I remember it. The 1970s in Sweden was a period when activism was easy. The welfare state was still strong and unquestioned, with the possible exception of those who actually benefited from its generosity. Raising funds for different kinds of collective and cultural activities was not difficult: the government, local authorities, and others such as adult educational associations favoured many kinds of initiatives. Thus, for instance, local authorities offered—without charge—space for gatherings such as seminars for study groups, or rehearsals for amateur plays. Many schools were open after hours for almost anyone who could produce some kind of plan or affiliation to an organization. Not only public authorities, but even organizations such as labour unions had their heyday of prosperity and influence, and it was common for them to encourage cultural and collective enterprises. That is, culture was all, and ‘alternative’ (‘non-commer- cial’), vaguely leftist cultural expressions were preferred. One of the central concepts in circulation was ‘criticism’, deriving from a variety of theoretical and political (Marxist) sources, such as the Frankfurt school, which had been introduced in academia and political study circles in many places. In the aftermath of the expansion of the 1950s film club movement—with its origins in fan cultures—criticism was a notion naturally adapted in film culture as well. In addition, the profession of a film critic developed from 121 women, film and agency in the 1970s and 1980s its early function to the point where ‘anybody could write criticism’ and soon gain an air of authority and poise.1 Critics and criticism from different areas of the same field could conflict fiercely with each other, as happened between the mem- bers of the feminist movement, who insisted on more power for women in the film industry, and the film critics in the daily press.

    About « JOE HILL » By Mårten Blomkvist The international hit "Elvira Madigan" (1967), based on a true story about a Swedish drama of passion at the end of the 19th century, made Bo Widerberg one of the most sought after European film directors. It was only a matter of time before he would be doing filming in USA. "Joe Hill" was the project that brought him over. It turned into a powerful film, against all odds, for the filming process was extremely difficult, to the point that the film was officially called off a month into shooting. As with "Elvira", this was a true story. Joe Hill was originally Swede Joel Hägglund (1879- 1915), who with his brother arrived in USA 1902. Hill became engaged in the workers movement, and wrote rousing songs for them, setting new lyrics to Salvation Army-hits. The organization Industrial Workers of the World met with hard resistance from employers, who used all means to hold back the creation of unions. 1915 Hill was sentenced to death, accused of a murder during a robbery gone wrong. The trial was geared to result in a guilty verdict, and met with protests from around the world. Nevertheless, Hill was executed on November 19. The subject was a natural for Widerberg, who had started out wanting to put working class people and their struggles on the screen, having looked for them in vain in contemporary Swedish cinema. Widerberg was also keen to shoot the Norman Mailer novel "The deer park", a dream that stayed with him over the years, but finally "Joe Hill" was decided on, a co- production between Widerberg and Paramount.

    Roy Andersson’s Cinematic Poetry and the Spectre of César Vallejo URSULA LINDQVIST ABSTRACT: Sånger från andra våningen [Songs from the Second Floor] was Roy Andersson’s first feature film in 25 years when it won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. It exemplifies the maturation of a distinctive filmmaking style Andersson developed in two and half decades of making shorts and advertising films and testifies to his decades-long engagement with Peruvian modernist César Vallejo’s poetry. Andersson is known for his contentious relationship with Sweden’s film establishment, and his critiques of Nordic contemporary filmmakers parallel Vallejo’s similarly pointed critiques, in 1930s Paris, of the so-called “revolutionary” agenda of French Surrealists. The formal correspondences between Vallejo’s modernist poetry and Andersson’s “trivialist” cinema are likewise striking. In this essay, I argue that the spectre of Vallejo has so informed the development of Andersson’s distinctive vision and style as a filmmaker that an investigation of the interart correspondences between this unlikely pairing of avantgardists is overdue.
