Ludwig Kosche Collection an 20000033-004 Page 1 of 19 Canadian War Museum Finding Aid Ludwig Kosche Collection Accession Number 20000033-004 Ludwig Kosche Collection AN 20000033-004 Page 1 of 19 Canadian War Museum Finding Aid Ludwig Kosche Collection Accession number 20000033-004 Dates: 1933-1995 Extent: 10 boxes of documents and photographs; 302.0 cm or 3.2 m Biographical Sketch: Ludwig Kosche was born in Bremen on August 5, 1929 and arrived in Ottawa in 1950. He spent several years working in Sarnia and Timmins, Ontario. As a mature student, he received a B.A. and M.A. in history and a MLS degree. He served as librarian at the Canadian War Museum from 1973 until he retired in 1985 to pursue a further career in historical research. He was a regular contributor to a number of historical journals and periodicals, and was a well-respected specialist in the history of the Second World War. Ludwig was also an avid audiophile and his enjoyment, participation in, and his contribution to the knowledge of classical music was highly regarded. Ludwig Kosche passed away on May 17 2000 in Ottawa Ontario, Canada. In 1971 the Canadian War Museum acquired a Mercedes-Benz touring car which had been restored but not to perfection. It was said to have been used by Hermann Goering but there remained the possibility that it had been Adolf Hitler’s. Mr. Kosche became interested in the issue and as a consequence undertook extensive research on this card and on the large Mercedes-Benz cars in general. The research was conducted privately and the results were published in German and English language magazines. He also hoped to write a book on the subject some day. Language: the majority of the textual material in the fond is in English with some German. Scope and Content: This collection of 10 boxes of material represents just two of Ludwig Kosche’s research passions: the Mercedes-Benz cars used by Hitler and the Third Reich, and Sir Isaac Brock, his coatee and portraits. The collection consists of Kosche’s original correspondence with various individuals and institutions along with photocopies of original documents from a variety of institutions. When the National Archives of Canada closed its museum, it transferred artifacts of military interest to the Canadian War Museum. Included were relics of Sir Isaac Brock, including the coatee he was said to have been wearing when he was killed at the Battle of Queenston Heights in October 1812. In addition, there were portraits purported to be likenesses of Brock in Canadian museums but about which there was some doubt. Kosche set about to prove without doubt the authenticity of these relics and portraits and wrote papers based on the results of his research. Arrangement: This finding aid has been arranged numerically by file number within two distinct categories – Mercedes-Benz Cars of the Third Reich and Sir Isaac Brock and the Ludwig Kosche Collection AN 20000033-004 Page 2 of 19 War of 1812. A list of Mr. Kosche’s principal correspondents is also included at the end, arranged alphabetically. • Eva Braun Hitler's Odontological Identification-A Forensic Enigma?
J Forensic Sci, Apr. 1974, Vol. 19, No. 2 R. F. Sognnaes, ~ M.A., M.S., D.M.D., Ph.D. Eva Braun Hitler's Odontological Identification-A Forensic Enigma? Through generous cooperation by custodians of several museums, libraries, and govern- ment archive centers, the author has had occasion to explore various historical dental relics and reports covering the evolution of dental art and science over a period ranging from the time of George Washington to that of Adolf Hitler [1,2]. When the Berlin dentist, Dr. Hugo Johannes Blaschke, who cared for Germany's wartime leaders, was captured and interrogated by American army officers in 1945, he prepared descriptions and diagrams of the dental condition of Adolf Hitler, as well as of Martin Bormann and of Eva Braun, Hitler's longtime female companion whom he married just before the end of the war. By comparing American and Soviet reports it has been shown elsewhere that data attributed to a 1945 Russian autopsy report cited in 1968 by Bezymenski [3-5] are in harmony with Hitler's 1944 head and jaw X-rays which, after much search and research, were located through the cooperation of the Captured Record Branch of the U.S. Na- tional Archives and Records Service [2]. This discovery was followed by a detailed comparison with other dental data, as reported at the 6th International Conference on Forensic Sciences in Edinburgh in 1972 and subsequently published in early 1973 by Sognnaes and Str6m [6]. Similarly, the dental data elicited regarding Martin Bormann's dental condition, based on dental diagrams prepared by Dr.

The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

This page intentionally left blank Populist radical right parties in Europe As Europe enters a significant phase of re-integration of East and West, it faces an increasing problem with the rise of far-right political par- ties. Cas Mudde offers the first comprehensive and truly pan-European study of populist radical right parties in Europe. He focuses on the par- ties themselves, discussing them both as dependent and independent variables. Based upon a wealth of primary and secondary literature, this book offers critical and original insights into three major aspects of European populist radical right parties: concepts and classifications; themes and issues; and explanations for electoral failures and successes. It concludes with a discussion of the impact of radical right parties on European democracies, and vice versa, and offers suggestions for future research. cas mudde is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Antwerp. American Intelligence and the Question of Hitler’s Death Undergraduate Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with honors research distinction in History in the Undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Kelsey Mullen The Ohio State University November 2014 Project Advisor: Professor Alice Conklin, Department of History Project Mentor: Doctoral Candidate Sarah K. Douglas, Department of History American Intelligence and the Question of Hitler’s Death 2 Introduction The fall of Berlin marked the end of the European theatre of the Second World War. The Red Army ravaged the city and laid much of it to waste in the early days of May 1945. A large portion of Hitler’s inner circle, including the Führer himself, had been holed up in the Führerbunker underneath the old Reich Chancellery garden since January of 1945. Many top Nazi Party officials fled or attempted to flee the city ruins in the final moments before their destruction at the Russians’ hands. When the dust settled, the German army’s capitulation was complete. There were many unanswered questions for the Allies of World War II following the Nazi surrender. Invading Russian troops, despite recovering Hitler’s body, failed to disclose this fact to their Allies when the battle ended. In September of 1945, Dick White, the head of counter intelligence in the British zone of occupation, assigned a young scholar named Hugh Trevor- Roper to conduct an investigation into Hitler’s last days in order to refute the idea the Russians promoted and perpetuated that the Führer had escaped.1 Major Trevor-Roper began his investigation on September 18, 1945 and presented his conclusions to the international press on November 1, 1945.

Whose Hi/story Is It? The U.S. Reception of Downfall David Bathrick Before I address the U.S. media response to the fi lm Downfall, I would like to mention a methodological problem that I encountered time and again when researching this essay: whether it is possible to speak of reception in purely national terms in this age of globalization, be it a foreign fi lm or any other cultural artifact. Generally speaking, Bernd Eichinger’s large-scale production Downfall can be considered a success in America both fi nancially and critically. On its fi rst weekend alone in New York City it broke box-offi ce records for the small repertory movie theater Film Forum, grossing $24,220, despite its consider- able length, some two and a half hours, and the fact that it was shown in the original with subtitles. Nationally, audience attendance remained unusually high for the following twelve weeks, compared with average fi gures for other German fi lms made for export markets.1 Downfall, which grossed $5,501,940 to the end of October 2005, was an unequivocal box-offi ce hit. One major reason for its success was certainly the content. Adolf Hit- ler, in his capacity as star of the silver screen, has always been a suffi cient This article originally appeared in Das Böse im Blick: Die Gegenwart des Nationalsozialismus im Film, ed. Hitler was forty-four years old in the spring of 1933 when he put in mo- tion the rumbling wheels of the benighted regime that would bring disaster to Germany — and bring the Volkswagen to life. Born virtually with the au- tomobile, Hitler was infatuated with it, and with other forms of technology that he associated with his youth, throughout his life. One easily pictures the leader of the National Socialists leafing through the Allgemeine Automobil-Zeitung, Motor und Sport, and even Motor Kritik, whose enthusiastic and knowledgeable engineer-editor Josef Ganz argued at length toward the end of the 1920s in favor of a small, affordable, and eco- nomic Volksauto — a car for the people. For the Hungarian-born Ganz the cars that came closest to his ideal were the air-cooled Czech Tatras with their backbone frames and independent rear suspension. Hitler too was a fan of the Tatras and their designer Hans Ledwinka. He would meet Ledwinka, a fellow Austrian, early in the thirties and be person- ally and privately briefed by him about the latest Tatra models at the Berlin Auto Shows.

REVEALING AND CONCEALING HITLER‟S VISUAL DISCOURSE: CONSIDERING “FORBIDDEN” IMAGES WITH RHETORICS OF DISPLAY by MATTHEW DONALD Under the Direction of Mary Hocks ABSTRACT Typically, when considering Adolf Hitler, we see him in one of two ways: A parodied figure or a monolithic figure of power. I argue that instead of only viewing images of Hitler he wanted us to see, we should expand our view and overall consideration of images he did not want his audiences to bear witness. By examining a collection of photographs that Hitler censored from his audiences, I question what remains hidden about Hitler‟s image when we are constantly shown widely circulated images of Hitler. To satisfy this inquiry, I utilize rhetorics of display to argue that when we analyze and include these hidden images into the Hitlerian visual discourse, we further complicate and disrupt the Hitler Myth.
