Kusayang kalian semua Abstrak tesis yang dikemukakan kepada Senat Universiti Putra Malaysia sebagai memenuhi keperluan untuk ijazah Master Sastera KRITIKAN SOSIAL DALAM FILEM MAMAT KHALID Oleh AL-FATIHAH BINTI MD ADNAN Oktober 2014 Pengerusi : Normaliza Abd Rahim, PhD Fakulti : Bahasa Moden dan Komunikasi UPM Kajian ini adalah analisis tentang kritikan sosial yang dipaparkan oleh Mamat Khalid dalam filem Melayu yang telah diterbitkan pada 2005 hingga 2012, iaitu filem Rock, Man Laksa, Zombi Kampung Pisang, Estet, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, Husin Mon dan Jin Pakai Toncit serta filem Rock Oo. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk menganalisis dan merumuskan kritikan sosial dalam filem Mamat Khalid, apabila tercetusnya beberapa masalah yang ditemukan iaitu kelompangan kajian terhadap kritikan sosial dalam filem. Kebanyakan filem tempatan yang dihasilkan menunjukkan bahawa aspek latar sosial itu jarang diberi perhatian dan didakwa bahawa belum ada filem Malaysia kerana roh atau jati diri sangat kurang dalam filem keluaran negara Malaysia. Terdapat juga beberapa pandangan yang mengatakan bahawa kemampuan yang ada pada Mamat Khalid telah banyak mencetuskan idea serta memaparkan isu sosial yang berlaku dalam kalangan masyarakat. Kajian ini akan menggunakan kaedah kualitatif dengan cara pengumpulan data dan analisis dokumen serta mengaplikasikannya dengan pendekatan sosiologi sastera. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat kritikan sosial yang dipaparkan dalam filem ini ialah kepercayaan cerita tahyul dan khurafat, kekuasaan bomoh dan jampi serapah, budaya yang tidak prihatin pada golongan tua, amalan suka lepakCO di kedai kopi, golongan muda yang terlibat dengan gejala vandalisme, gejala rempit dalam kalangan remaja, budaya asing yang menyerang, kelunturan semangat patriotik dalam kalangan masyarakat, penindasan terhadap golongan miskin, sikap yang ingin kaya dalam masa yang singkat, masyarakat yang tidak beradab, suka berangan, ©golongan muda yang terlibat dengan pengaruh budaya barat dan golongan muda yang terlibat dengan ajaran sesat. Oleh itu, kajian yang dijalankan ini akan menyelesaikan semua masalah yang dihadapi iaitu dengan melakukan kajian terhadap kritikan sosial dalam filem Mamat Khalid. Abstract of thesis presented to the Senat of Universiti Putra Malaysia in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts SOCIAL CRITICISM IN THE FILMS BY MAMAT KHALID By AL-FATIHAH BINTI MD ADNAN October 2014 Chairman : Normaliza Abd Rahim, PhD UPM Faculty : Modern Languages and Communication This research is an analysis of social criticism found in Mamat Khalid’s Malay film which was released in the year 2005 until 2012. The films are Rock, Man Laksa, Zombi Kampung Pisang, Estet, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah, Husin Mon dan Jin Pakai Toncit and last but not least would be Rock Oo. The objective of the research is to analyse and to summarise the social critics that can be found in Mamat Khalid’s film which has not been done by others. The aspects of social background are not often highlighted in the local films due to the poor essence of self-identity in all of the Malaysian local films. Reviewers also mentioned about Mamat Khalid’s capability of creating incredible ideas depicting social issues that occurs in the society. This research is using a qualitative method through data collection, analysing documents and applying it to enhance the sociological literature. The findings of the research imply that all social critics displayed on films are mostly superstitious; mythological based, beliefs in the power of witch doctors and incantations, youngsters disrespecting the elders, the elders who likes to waste time hanging out at the coffee shop for hours, vandalism among teenagers, underage getting involved with illegal underground bike race, western culture influence,CO no patriotic spirits among the people, oppression towards the poor and needy, the attitudes of typical Malays who dream of being rich fast without working hard to gain profit, habits of daydreaming, youngsters getting involved with the hype of western ©culture and also getting involved with deviant teachings. Hence, this research will be conducted in hopes of solving all issues occurred through the application of social criticism in Mamat Khalid’s film. PENGHARGAAN Saya memanjatkan syukur ke hadrat Allah Azzawa Jalla kerana dengan limpah kurnia, hidayat dan inayah-Nya, dapat saya menghasilkan tulisan ilmiah ini. Abstract Morris Beja in his book Film and Literature: An Introduction, said that since the Academy Awards was introduced in 1927 – 1928, about three quarters of the award for best film was won by film adaptations. This is proof that film adaptation is a form of art that has gained the attention of the world community and was a well- known form of narrative in the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe. This paper takes the initiative to trace the history of film adaptations in general by focusing on such films in Malaysia. Findings of the study reveal that the history of film adaptation in Malaysia started in 1933 during the filming enterprise of Cathay Film and Malay Film in Singapore up to the setting up of Merdeka Studio in Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s and beyond. The film industry in Malaysia faced many problems including the influx of imported films from Indonesia and the commercialization factor that did not guarantee profits. However, around 2006, concerted efforts were reinforced to adapt literary works into films, through workshops and competitions organized by Malaysian government bodies such as Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) and Radio and Television Malaysia (RTM).

Tanda-tanda yang diungkapkan oleh pengarang dalam teks memperlihatkan kisah- kisah sejarah yang dimasukkan ke dalam Pascasejarah kerana kisah- kisah sejarah itu sendiri merupakan “rumus yang berulang- berulang” dan dijadikan ikhtibar kepada para pembaca. Kisah-kisah benar dan nyata dari sejarah-sejarah yang terdahulu dipersembahkan oleh pengarang dalam fiksyen melalui tanda- tanda ikon, indeks dan simbol. Tajuk-tajuknya pula memperlihatkan tanda-tanda yang tersendiri yang perlu ditafsir oleh pembaca dan memberi indeks pengertian yang tersirat di sebalik tanda-tanda yang dipaparkan. Keseluruhan tajuk-tajuk cerpen tersebut merupakan indeksikal kepada dunia imaginatif dan kreatif dalam cerita yang digarap oleh pengarang. Tajuk-tajuk tersebut dipilih dan diletakkan bersesuaian dengan isi cerita yang telah dapat 47 menyiratkan makna rumusan cerita yang hendak disampaikan oleh pengarang melalui sejarahsejarah lalui Greek dan Rom serta mitos Yunani.

Mamat Khalid's Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang (2008), which focuses upon an intriguing story of an investigative journalist having to confront mysterious disappearances, conspiracies and ghostly presence is a rambunctious black-and-white send-up of (Hollywood) film noir. The film is a strikingly self-reflexive display of generic possibilities as cultural performance, for it flaunts an intertextual style, consciously showcasing its production process, and constantly 'quotes' from other cultural texts. This essay argues that Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang works as both a parody and a satire. As a parody, the film's target is concerned with formal and aesthetic elements. Mamat deftly interweaves a melange of film genres, ranging from Hollywood noir to old Malay horror. As a satire, the film is comedy with an edge, with its target being social and political in some way. Within its narrative, the film pokes fun at contemporary Malaysian society and politics in a subtle, underlying manner, thus providing the viewer with a fascinating subtext. By exploring the film's generic discursivities in terms of Mamat's parodic strategy and satirical mode, the ultimate aim of this essay is to sanction a more appropriate generic label for the film. Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang (2008, lit. When the Full Moon Rises) remains the only local film in 2008 which has spawned a host of relentless reactions and debates, albeit the lukewarm response it received among local moviegoers upon its release.1 Perhaps one of the most fascinating issues surrounding its reception is its generic approach employed by the director Mamat Khalid; this includes its attempt at being filmed in black and white.

    CORINNE ADRIENNE Following her debut in the award winning film Spinning Gasing, Corinne chose to further study acting at The Victoria College of Arts in Melbourne. From there she returned to Malaysia and was quickly cast as a lead in her first theatre production with the Five Arts Centre, The Good Daughter. Following this she landed a series of roles in Malay and English productions including the custom cop series Squad Elite One, tele- movie Primadona, sitcom Buddies and co- hosted the Malay game show series Juara Minda . Broadening her horizons, Corinne moved to Singapore to play one of the leads in the highly successful Heartlanders and then starred in her second feature film, City Sharks alongside Malaysian & Singaporean stars. A rising star in Singaporean television, Corinne landed leading roles in numerous prominent productions such as The Singapore Short Story Project, (best Drama series ATV awards 2003), Ways of The Matriarch 1,2,3, Heartlanders 1&2 and Brothers 4, as well as telemovies such as One Peep Too Many and Birthday Party. Following lead stage appearances in sold out performances of Mardi Gras and A Marriage of Inconvenience, Corinne returned to TV in Singapore Shakes, a made for television series of modern adaptations of Shakespearean plays, in which she starred in four episodes. Also a celebrity host, Corinne has hosted such prestigious events as Communic Asia 2002, Hempel factory opening (attended by His Royal Highness Prince of Denmark) and the UK Singapore Partners In Science Year, with His Royal Highness Prince Andrew as the guest of honour. Her exotic and rare beauty also leads to numerous modeling opportunities and Corinne has been in many magazines and fashion shows and has also been the celebrity model for renowned international hairstylist Guy Kremer at The 2003 L’Oreal Hair Show at the Esplanade and the opening of the high end Australian designers boutique Felt.
