Athletics Australia announced yesterday (see http://athletics.com.au/News/apprentice-coach) that he would be one of two new coaches in their national structure. The announcement reads as follows Athletics Australia High Performance Director, Simon Nathan, has today confirmed the appointment of Mike Barber and Daniel Coleman to the position of Apprentice Coach. To be based at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra (ACT), where they will work closely with Head Coach, Craig Hilliard, Barber will take on the coaching of field athletes, while Coleman will be responsible for assisting in the development of race walkers. Both Barber and Coleman will commence in their part-time roles as soon as possible. “Both Mike and Daniel were ideal candidates for the position of Apprentice Coach with Athletics Australia. They have a sound depth of coaching knowledge already and by working closely with Craig Hilliard they will continue to develop into the future,” Nathan said. “Mike is the current coach of Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Roberts, and his role will see him play an integral role in the day-to-day coaching and management of field event athletes. -

Over the last three months, Katie has compiled a series of outstanding race times and broken records galore. At the Australian Championships in Sydney last Friday evening, she smashed her Australian U20 10,000m track walk record by a staggering 69 seconds, clocking 43:20.65 to win the Australian Open title. It easily bettered her 44:29.27 record from January in Canberra and comes on top of her sub-1:30 20km walks. And in more good news, 20 year old Jemima Montag finished not far behind her with a PB 43:51.47. Katie with her gold medal in Sydney on Friday evening The two girls now move up to 3rd and 6th on my Australian All-Time ranking list. But the week belonged to Katie with her win. She must surely now arguably rank as the world’s top female U20 walker. 1. 41.30 Kerry Saxby-Junna N 20/06/1961 1 Canberra 27/08/1988 27 2. 42.15 Jane Saville N 05/11/1974 6 Eisenhuttenstadt 8/05/1999 24 3. -

It was his first 20km time since the 2016 World Masters Championships in Perth in November 2016 - and on that occasion he walked a much slower 2:01:29. He owns the M70 World record with 1:52:35, done in June 2016 in Melbourne. He is quickly getting back into that sort of shape. Well done Andrew, inspirational stuff! Andrew competing at Middle Park a week before in one of our VRWC winter season walks WHAT’S COMING UP • Next Saturday sees us back at Middle Park for our next round of VRWC winter season roadwalks. It’s another prizes day, with prizes to the male and female walker who best their season best time by the largest margin in each race category.
