THE IOWA CENTRAL PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT PRESENTS....

MUSIC BY LYRICS BY Andrew Lloyd WebberMARCH 4, 5, 6, 2010 DECKER AUDITORIUM With exclusive arrangement with R&H Theatricals and The Limited. www.rhtheatricals.com DIRECTOR'SNote The Old Testament story of is a compelling one, filled with the drama of betrayal, jealousy, power, destiny, forgiveness, and redemption. The Biblical story speaks of human destiny despite our situations, and it even reaches to the farming heart of Iowa when Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh. (*For those unfamiliar with this story, please read my featured highlights on the next page in the hopes that it will help you more easily follow the story—presented entirely in song in this musical.)

This is one show that has always been on my Top Ten list to direct, in large part because of the variety in song styles—particularly the comedic ones involving Joseph’s brothers. What excites me most about our production, however, is how we have featured our women in a musical that does not typically do so. We have been able to create some truly compelling stage pictures with the storytelling component of the narrators and some featured dancers joining us from Iowa Central’s dance team. They will take the stage a lot. In fact, there will be significant doubling of parts so that all of our students will gain quality stage time. That’s always a priority for us as directors—we want to equip our students with as much performance experience as we can. So, please be prepared to suspend your disbelief as our students shift from one character to another throughout the show. Costuming becomes our best friend in shows like this.

We are really proud of our students and how hard they work alongside us. We are also thankful for the enthusiastic audiences that have supported us here at Iowa Central for so many years. The audience plays an integral part in a theatrical event, so thank you for being a member of the team tonight! Now, sit back, forget about the snow, and travel with us to the desert of Canaan. . .we will return you just in time for the coming of Spring!

Teresa Jackson SUMMARYJoseph's OF Story Based on Genesis 37, 39-46 Act I Start in Canaan • Jacob has 12 sons, yet he loves Joseph the most because his mother was his favorite wife. • He presents Joseph with a coat of many colors. • Joseph’s brothers are jealous, not only because of the coat but because Joseph shares his dreams with them...dreams which forecast that someday they will bow down to him for some unknown reason... • The brothers find an opportunity to sell Joseph as a slave in Egypt. • They tell their father he was killed... Switch to Egypt: • Joseph is a servant to Potiphar, a powerful man...yet one who has no power over the wandering eye of his wife. Her eye wanders to Joseph...and he soon gets sent to prison. • Joseph meets men in prison and accurately interprets the dreams of a butler and a baker. • Joseph’s faith in God remains strong even in the midst of his imprisonment.

Act II Still in Egypt: • Pharaoh’s dreams are disturbing him. He doesn’t know what they mean. • His butler remembers Joseph from prison, and Pharaoh sends for him. • Joseph tells Pharaoh that his dreams are a forecast for his farmers: years of plenty will be followed by years of famine. • Joseph helps Pharaoh prepare for the storage and the rationing of food for the coming years. Back in Canaan • Jacob and his remaining sons are experiencing the famine. • They decide to go to Egypt to find relief and food. In Egypt • They appear before Joseph, not realizing who he is. • Joseph attempts to frame one of the youngest brothers to see if the others will remain self-serving - or reveal that they have changed through the years. • When they stand up for Benjamin, Joseph realizes they are now honest men. • He helps them. The family is reunited. ACTOne Prologue...... Narrators, Dancers, Joseph Jacob and Sons...... Full cast Joseph's Coat...... Full cast Joseph's Dreams......
