He added the title of NBA owner to a list that already included international businessman, state senator, entrepreneur, philanthropist and executive of the year. Glen Taylor is chairman and CEO of the multinational Taylor Corporation, based in Mankato, Minn. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. During this period, he worked part time at Carlson Wedding Service, a print shop specializing in formal invitations. After graduation he continued to work at the company, developing strategies to cut delivery time, improve service and expand offerings. Taylor purchased the company in 1975, assembled a passionate leadership team and dramatically expanded the firm’s capabilities, growing it into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. Today Taylor Corporation, based in North Mankato, includes more than 70 subsidiaries providing business and personal communications products, technologies and marketing services. Other enterprises owned by Glen are in securities, agricultural, and medical fields. He continued his education at the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1997, Mankato State University awarded Taylor their first honorary doctorate. Taylor received the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws for his distinguished professional career and volunteer service. In October 2001, Taylor was inducted into the Minnesota State University, Mankato Hall of Distinction. Taylor’s business savvy has been recognized by Corporate Report magazine, which honored him as its Executive of the Year (1987), and the Sales and Marketing Executives of Minneapolis/St. Paul, who awarded him with their Sales Executive of the Year Award (1999). He was also inducted into the Minnesota Hall of Fame (2002) by Twin Cities Monthly Magazine. Taylor was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1980, where he served until 1990. He became assistant Senate minority leader in 1982. From 1984 to 1986, he served as Senate minority leader. While in the Senate, Taylor was instrumental in providing leadership in the areas of higher education, child care and economic development policies. He has served on the NBA Planning Committee and has been Chairman of the Audit Committee. In October of 2008, Taylor was named Chairman of the NBA's Board of Governors. Through personal involvement, Taylor has remained active in many community, civic and charitable causes. He has also has served on his church’s board of deacons and board of trustees and on the Mankato State University Foundation board of directors. Taylor and his family have provided financial assistance and participated in missions to Africa, Turkey, Egypt and Central America to support the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Common Hope. Nationally, Taylor has provided expert testimony on business and childcare issues to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and served as a committee chair on the 1991 Commission on Reform and Efficiency (CORE). Upon graduation from Rummel in 1972, Cummings opted to attend Southern Methodist University, after being recruiting by other colleges such as Texas, Tennessee, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Jacksonville, Vanderbilt and, ironically, Tulane. After a pair of seasons in Dallas, he transferred back home to Tulane where he would average 19.5 points and 11.6 rebounds for the Green Wave over his two years on Willow Street from 1975 to 1977. For his accomplishments in college basketball in Louisiana, Cummings has been elected to the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

    Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation Min-hwan Oh, Suraj Keshri, Garud Iyengar Columbia University New York, NY, USA, 10027 [email protected], [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In this paper, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch and event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node is a network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-14 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. 1 Introduction Predicting the outcomes of professional sports events is one of the most popular practices in the sports media, fan communities and, of course, sport betting related industries. Predictions range from human prediction to statistical analysis of historical data. In recent years, basketball, specifically the NBA, has received much atten- tion as a domain of analytics with the advent of player tracking data.

Apolo Anton Ohno, Special Olympics Global Ambassador Biography: Apolo Anton Ohno is an American short track speed skating competitor and an eight-time medalist (two gold, two silver, four bronze) in the Winter Olympics. He is the most decorated American Winter Olympic athlete of all time. Raised by his father, Ohno began training full-time in 1996. At the age of 14, he became the youngest U.S. national champion in 1997 and was the reigning champion from 2001-2009, winning the title and total of 12 times. In December 1999, he became the youngest skater to win a World Cup event title. Two years later, in 2001, Ohno became the first American to win a World Cup overall title, which he won again in 2003 and 2005. He won his first overall World Championship title at the 2008 championships. Ohno’s accolades and accomplishments include being the United States Olympic Committee’s Male Athlete of the Month in October 2003 and March 2008, the U.S. Speedskating’s Athlete of the Year for 2003, and a 2002, 2003, and 2006 finalist for the Sullivan Award, which recognizes the best amateur athlete in the United States. Since gaining recognition through his sport, Ohno has worked as a motivational speaker and a philanthropist and started a nutritional supplement business called 8 Zone. In 2007, he competed on and won the reality TV show Dancing with the Stars.
