From the Register

Funerals 24 April William Smith, All Saints, Rothbury May he rest in peace

Service Music for Summer Sundays

Sunday June 10th at Alwinton Percy Whilock – Salix Percy Whitlock – Fidelis

Sunday June 17th at Holystone William Walton – Elegy Philip Moore - Prelude for Withycombe

During the summer, I always try to play 20th Century music - either English or French. For June I've chosen entirely British composers. Percy Whilock played the theatre organ at Bournemouth for many years, and composed many pieces of a folksong nature, which are very suitable as short organ voluntaries. William Walton composed his Elegy for the film Richard III. Philip Moore was Director of Music at York Minster for many years, and this Prelude for Withycombe is a favourite of mine.

VALLEY HAPPENINGS

May has been the calm after the storm and what a pleasure! Sunshine and how everything has shot away and how beautiful the countryside looks. The post-lambing party at Alwinton has been, so obviously the shepherds are all out and about again!

The churchyards at both Alwinton and Holystone are looking a picture and the daffodils have been fantastic. At Alwinton we have had several visitors looking for relatives and they were very complimentary about how pretty it was looking; so thanks to Michael and Jon again.

Sue’s Christian Aid coffee morning will have been by the time this goes out but apologies for the incorrect date in the previous letter and to those who arrived laden with goodies! Hopefully they will all arrive again on the 18th and she will have another very successful morning.

Gail is going to have 2 light lunch openings in Alwinton church in July (dates below); the idea being to catch cyclists, walkers, motor bikers and tourists and, of course anyone that cares to pop in and support her!

The Alwinton concerts are in full flow and the first one was a joy. Two fiddles, viola and cello giving us a wonderful evening of traditional music and aren’t we lucky to have such talent on our doorstep? The next one is on June 17th at 3.00pm and they will be members of the Halle… so it has to be a treat. The last one is July 7th and they are having a workshop in the afternoon from 2.00pm.

Pop in your diary the Pimms and Canapes at Glebe House, Holystone on Sunday, 1st July at 12.30pm. We had a marvellous party last year and more than enough to eat!
