4 Bull Dog Bulletin August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Football: 2015 Bull Dogs to rely on potent offense, stingy defense

It is a time of optimism for the Colum- bus North football team. After posting .500 or better records in 10 of the past 13 years but falling short of that plateau the past two seasons, the Bull Dogs look poised for a strong effort in 2015. Although the senior class is a bit thin, the squad is bolstered by a strong group of jun- iors and sophomores. Thus, coach Tim Bless & Co. are looking forward to good things over the next 10-plus weeks. “We’re a relatively young team with a small senior class,” Bless said. “Still, we have some excellent seniors blending with a talented group of underclassmen who likely will improve as they gain Friday night experience.” Specifically, the Bull Dogs will look to juniors Mitchell Burton and Triston Perry as keys on offense. Burton, a 6-2, 185-pound tailback, ran for 537 yards and seven touchdowns in just three games as the starter last season. He appears set to post big numbers with a full season in front of him. The 6-2, 185-pound Perry passed for 1,077 yards and 11 TDs while also showing an ability to run after taking over as quarterback. Both should spark what should be a potent attack. “Mitchell has an excellent combination of speed as well as being a hard runner,” Bless said. “Triston brings athleticism to our QB pos- ition. He is a true dual threat.” TOP TACKLER: Brice McDaniel (20) combines with Jacob Hamblin Senior receivers Alex Algee (6-1, 185) for a stop last season. McDaniel led the team with 141 tackles in 2014. and Wyatt Barkes (5-11, 160) as well as senior tight end Drew Schoeberl (6-5, 250) complement that duo. Algee is the team’s top returning receiver after making 21 catches for 400 yards and five touchdowns. Barkes had 18 receptions for 193 ayrds, while Schoeberl caught 11 balls for 84 yards. Schoeberl and junior left tackle David Redding (6-5, 280) pace a blocking unit that also includes sophomore Logan Abbott (6-1, 245) at left guard, junior Daniel Hill (6-0, 220) at center, senior Steven DeDomenic (6-1, 240) at right guard and junior Alex Downin (6-3, 260) at right tackle. “We will play a pro-style offense, but we will look to incorporate more spread elements and change up tempo this year,” the coach said. Defensively, senior linebackers Brice McDaniel (6-2, 215) and Sean Dasovich (5-11, 210), senior safety Mitchell Kelley (5-11, 185) and junior tackle Coleman Tennyson (6-2, 290) are primary players. McDaniel topped the team with 141 stops a year ago. Tennyson notched 62 tackles, Dasovich contributed 52 tackles, and Kelley had 41 tackles. “Brice could end up being one of our school’s all-time leading tacklers, while Sean is a great leader and a physical, high-IQ player,” Bless said. “As a former quarterback, Mitchell has excellent instincts in defending the pass and is very physical in run support. Coleman should be a force to deal with along the defensive line.” Other capable players join them. Schoeberl, junior Hunter Wolford (5-11, 285) and junior Spencer West (6-1, 225) are paired with Tennyson on the defensive front, while junior Tucker Payne (5-9, 200) completes the linebacking trio. Junior Harley Huser (5-11, 160) is the other safety, while sophomores J.D. Harris (5-10, 155) and Cortez Bandy (5-10, 190) have the speed to shut down opponents’ wideout threats as cornerbacks. “We typically play a 4-3 defense, but we also will use a three-man front on some packages this season,” Bless said. “Through off- season study, we at times plan to try some new blitz schemes with some new coverages behind them.” Senior Mitchell Essex proved to be a weapon as a punter last season, averaging 35.0 yards on 48 punts and 12 times pinning the op- ponent inside its 20. Burton, Algee and Barkes have shown ability in the return game, so that could be a plus. Columbus North opens its season at 7 p.m. Friday at Franklin, then travels to Columbus East for the annual intra-city clash at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28. The remaining seven regular-season games are Conference Indiana contests, and Bless believes the Bull Dogs will contend at the top of the league. “Bloomington South and Terre Haute South are the top dogs until proven otherwise, and Southport returns a strong nucleus with one of the finest QBs in the state,” he said. “We feel the Bull Dogs belong in this conversation as well.” August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 5 2015Columbus North Bull Dogs Football Roster # NAME HT WT GRADE POSITION # NAME HT WT GRADE POSITION 1 Harris, JD 5'10 155 10 WR/DB 41 Burton, Justin 5'6 150 12 DB 2 Huser, Harley 5'11 160 11 WR/DB 42 Tungett, Nick 5'10 200 10 DL 3 Wilson, Drew 5'11 145 10 K/P 43 Dasovich, Sean 5'11 210 12 RB/LB 5 Bandy, Cortez 5'10 190 10 RB/DB 44 Suverkrup, Joseph 6'3 215 11 DL 7 Perry, Triston 6'2 185 11 QB 51 Logston, Cameron 5'7 160 10 DL 8 Hunter, Damon Jr. 5'9 150 10 DB 54 DeDomenic, Steven 6'1 240 12 OL 9 Payne, Tanner 6'0 205 11 QB/TE 55 Corbin, Cameron 5'10 225 11 OL 10 Mendez, Tyler 5'7 150 11 DB 56 Stewart, Devon 5'8 215 12 OL 11 Garrett, James 5'9 165 11 WR 57 Hill, Daniel 6'0 220 11 OL 12 Kelley, Mitchell 5'11 185 12 DB 58 Wolford, Hunter 5'11 285 11 OL/DL 13 Barkes, Wyatt 5'11 160 12 WR 60 LaMasters, Jared 6'0 165 10 DL 14 Ables, Bryce 6'1 175 12 DB 61 Patrick, Blake 5'11 260 11 DL 15 Flemmons, Jaylen 6'2 185 10 QB/DB 65 Downin, Alex 6'3 260 11 OL 16 Essex, Mitchell 6'3 175 12 WR/P 66 Abbott, Logan 6'1 245 10 OL/DL 17 Rider, Chase 5'9 150 10 WR 67 Moreno, Jordan 5'8 225 10 OL 18 Pike, Peyton 5'8 145 10 WR 68 Hartman, Matthew 5'7 150 10 OL 19 Ariishi, Kaito 5'6 155 11 DB 71 McGaha, Clayton 5'5 215 11 OL 20 McDaniel, Brice 6'2 215 12 TE/LB 73 Hutton, Gabe 6'0 225 10 OL 21 Burton, Mitchell 6'2 185 11 RB/DB 74 Farrell, Tim 5'10 265 11 OL 23 Maggett, Parker 5'7 145 10 DB 75 Greenlee, Davin 5'10 240 10 OL 24 Byers, Grant 5'10 165 11 DB 78 Redding, David 6'5 280 11 OL 25 Chapman, Andrew 5'9 180 10 RB/LB 80 Larrison, Caleb 6'0 165 10 TE 26 Robbins, Will 6'1 170 10 LB 81 Bailey, Tristan 6'0 155 10 WR 27 Salle-Tabor, Mark 6'0 160 11 K/P 82 Algee, Alex 6'1 185 12 WR 28 Hatchett, Collin 5'9 205 12 RB/LB 83 Clark, Kendrick 5'8 170 12 LB 29 Villa, Cortez 5'8 175 10 LB 84 Schoeberl, Drew 6'5 250 12 TE/DL 32 Argueta-Ventura, Sam 5'7 190 12 RB 85 Hernandez, Aaron 5'9 160 10 WR 33 Payne, Tucker 5'9 200 11 LB 87 Klein, Trenton 6'1 165 11 WR 34 Earl, Noah 5'11 170 10 LB 89 Kelley, Jordan 6'4 175 11 TE 35 Ahmad, Kamran 5'6 135 10 DB 91 West, Spencer 6'1 225 11 DL 36 Barkes, Wesley 5'9 160 10 RB 92 Rivera, Jason 5'7 175 11 DL 37 Kleinhenz, Brigham 5'10 160 10 LB 94 Linville, Evan 5'11 210 11 DL 39 Garcia, Misa 5'6 185 11 RB 98 Davis, Dante 5'10 210 11 DL 40 Tran, Tanner 5'7 165 10 LB 99 Tennyson, Coleman 6'2 290 11 DL

August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 9 Boys Soccer: Bull Dogs to count on defense while offense matures

Nothing short of success is expected from Co- lumbus North boys soccer, and the Bull Dogs again figure to be a strong unit defensively in 2015. The offense? That may be a work in progress to begin the season, especially considering that coach Andy Glover’s squad again will face a rigorous schedule that includes Cathedral, Columbus East, Westfield, Southport, Avon, Center Grove, Carmel and Bloomington South on the agenda. All are capable squads and figure to test the Bull Dogs, who went 14-4-2 and captured Conference Indiana Tournament and sectional titles last season but graduated 11 players from that team. Senior Tyler Heathcote, who totaled seven points on three goals and one assist, is CN’s top returning scorer. Classmates set to help include Sam Snider (one goal, two assists), Alex Davidson (one goal, one assist), Mason Shaf- fer and goalkeeper Ty Bentham (0.42 goals against average). Snider, Davidson and Shaffer helped form the wall in front of Bentham that posted 13 shutouts in 20 outings last time. FULL SPEED AHEAD: Tyler Heathcote pushes the ball Others seniors expected to contribute are Lucas against Carmel last season. He scored three goals in 2014. McGill, Kevin Morales and goalkeeper Preston Grimes, while more help is available from a number of underclassmen. Those with some varsity experience in that group are sophomore Rico Hol- lenkamp (one goal, one assist) and junior Jake Osborne. Those hopeful of stepping into the lineup include juniors Cameron Phillips, Nick Beales, Robert Pflueger and Sam LaVelle, sopho- mores Jack Robertson, Axel Arroyo, Kaemon Jiles and Finn and Jannis Anderson, and freshmen Alex McGill and Zack Friend. “The strength of our schedule will help us be more prepared when sectionals, regionals and even state rolls around,” LaVelle said. “This should be a confidence builder.” The Bull Dogs open the season on Tuesday at East Central. The home opener is Thursday against Bloomington North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. CN then hosts Cathedral on Aug. 27 before facing Columbus East in the annual rivalry game on Aug. 29. August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 11 Girls Soccer: Youthful, short-handed cast still seeks strong effort

The 2015 Columbus North girls soccer team is hopeful of a good season despite a small senior class and significant injur- ies to two solid juniors. Still, coach Derek Stewart is optimistic about what this group of Bull Dogs can achieve. “We have a good mix of talent with the majority of play- ers coming from our junior class,” Stewart said. “We are a little short on seniors with only four, but we look forward to the rest of the classes picking up their game and stepping up to the challenge.” After posting a 13-5-1 record last season that included Conference Indiana Tournament and sectional championships, Co- lumbus North is hopeful of repeating those titles and perhaps going deeper in the state tournament. Katie Carlson, who scored two goals with five assists in 2014, is the top returning senior. Classmates joining her with the Bull Dogs are Emma LaVelle (one goal, one assist), Rachel Craig and Dianna Ruiz-Knox. A loaded junior class took a hit when standouts Addy Lang IN ACTION: Natalie Teo (14) makes a move near (25 goals, eight assists) and Claire Risley were lost for the season the sideline as coach Derek Stewart watches. after each suffered a major knee injury. However, other juniors in- cluding Natalie Teo (four goals, eight assists), Chloe Chambers (four goals), Emma Wilson, Marina Hughes, Reagan Ward and goalkeeper- Charlotte Verbanic (1.07 goals against average) are among those returning with varsity experience. Complementing them are juniors Elizabeth Craig and Katlin Meek, up from last season’s JV, as well as sophomore Morgan Parkhurst, a varsity letterwinner last time. Additional sophomores seeking to make an impact include Kristen Orben, Corrine Orben, Anna Andrews, Kaitlyn Calandro, Jocelyn Maynard and goalkeeper Liz Tynan. Freshmen Elise Whitley, Baleigh Drum and Tanner Johnson also strive to make a mark in a season where Stewart hopes all healthy players stay healthy, that the team stays focused on the task at hand and the younger players develop well. Columbus North opens its season on Monday at home against Center Grove at the Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The team travels to Lawrenceburg for a game on Saturday, then hosts Bloomington North on Aug. 26 before facing Columbus East in the annual rivalry game on Aug. 29. Stewart is confident that he will watch this team grow through the season. “The roster has a number of players expecting to contribute,” he said. “I think we will see a number of players in different positions than they are used to playing.” (article by CN senior Anthony Rork)

August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 15 Cross Country: Girls, boys each seek to excel once more in 2015

High quality and ample depth should be trademarks for the 2015 Columbus North cross country teams. The CN girls return five of seven athletes who paced the squad to a fifth- place finish at the 2014 state meet, while the Bull Dog boys feature three athletes who ran in some races in a tournament series where they placed fourth at state. Thus, veteran coach Rick Weinheimer is optimistic about how both groups will perform. Junior Rachel Brougher and senior Sierra Lax each turned in all-state efforts for the girls last season, Brougher placing 11th at state in 18:18.5 while Lax with 18th in 18:29.5. They receive strong support from senior Allison Coffey, 33rd at state in 18:51.5, senior Nina Bouthier, 92nd at state in 19:35.2, and sophomore Arig Tong, 120th at state in 19:51.7. “Brougher and Lax will run up front, but I believe that Bouthier, Tong, and Coffey will also run very close to the lead pack,” Weinheimer said. “This group makes the most of every opportunity every day.” A large number of girls will compete for the other varsity spots. They include seniors Haley Duke and Marlee Reisinger, juniors Rebekah Albers, Emi Hammond and Sydney Perry, sophomores Kirsten Ballard, Alexa Eaton, Jocelyn Maynard, Madelyn Sanders and Ana Singhal, and freshman Ensley Hammond. FRONT-RUNNER: Rachel Brougher “This group will race really hard and really aggressively,” the coach said of led the Columbus North girls with an the CN girls. “I believe they are somewhere in the top five teams in the state and would 11th place finish at the 2014 state meet. like to ultimately finish at the top end of that group.” Senior Ben Rankin, senior Chase McQueen and junior Alec Embry are headliners for the Bull Dog boys. Rankin placed 37th at state last season with a time of 16:04.4, while McQueen was 141st at state in 16:58.1. Embry did not run at the 2014 state meet, but Weinheimer considers him a solid varsity runner for 2015. A plethora of possible candidates are vying to fill the remaining varsity spots. That group includes seniors Braden Hammond, Chan- dler Steward, Ahaan Singal, Johnny Hodson, Jared Imlay and Ben Verbanic, juniors Elijah Brooks, Eli Fischer and Justin Spoon, and sopho- mores Evan Porter, Charlie Allen, Peyton Shelton and Drew Thompson. “While we may develop some front runners and Ben Rankin is the top candidate based on last year, this year’s strength will have to come from a pack of guys racing hard together and getting our No. 5 (runner) across the finish line as quickly as possible,” Weinheimer said. “Overall, I think we are somewhere in the top 15 teams in the state. How far up we finish will depend a lot on continuing to train hard and then racing with fearlessness and confidence.” Without a doubt, the coach likes this set of athletes and what they will do. “This group has developed an excellent understanding that leadership is not just about being loud and visible, it’s about making a contribution to the team,” he said. “Many of them find ways to contribute and to make a positive difference every day, no matter how fast or slow they are as runners.” 2015 CROSS COUNTRY ROSTERS BOYS BOYS BOYS GIRLS GIRLS Name Yr. Individually, junior Holly Anderson has been the leader. She fired a personal-best 74 at Champions Pointe, and only a late double- bogey prevented her from shooting par. Sophomore Danbi Kim had a strong round in the Fall Preview, but she was a bit off her game at Champions Pointe. Junior Aubrey Smith and freshman Alex Munnicha each has been in the 80s for both 18-hole events. Munnicha had a per- sonal-best 81 at Champions Pointe. Munnicha was the individual medalist with a 40 in the dual meet with Perry Meridian, a decision that pushed the Bull Dogs’ win- ning streak in two-, three-and four-team matches to 26 victories in a row. In addition, CN has won 37 of their last 38 such matches, a string dating to late in the 2011 season. Sophomore Julia Luken shaved 10 strokes from her first 18-hole round to her second, and she appears poised to play more consist- ently. Sophomore Molly Donnell did well in her first 18-hole event, shooting an 89 in the Greensburg Invitational, while junior Maddy Neal carded a 91 there and followed with a 47 in the first dual match. Overall, coaches Scott Seavers and Brett White have been pleased with what they have seen. “We thought we might be a little lower in our score,” White said of the Fuzzy Invitational. “Still, we had two personal bests, and the three teams that finished ahead of us are really good teams. Evansville North is No. 1, while Floyd Central plays (Champions Pointe) regular- ly and Evansville Memorial also is a solid squad.” Columbus North is part of a 21-team field in the Hall of Fame Invitational at Country Oaks Golf Club on Saturday in Montgomery, Ind. It follows by playing in the Roncalli Invitational on Aug. 29 at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis and the Bloomington South Invitation- al on Sept. 5 at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington. Those events should help prepare the team for what it will see at the Conference Indiana Tournament as well as the sectional and beyond later in the season. “These are tournament environments where we can gauge where we are at,” White said. “Right now, we know we have more strokes where we can improve. Our goal is to be peaking at the right time, to be our best at the end of the season.”

August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 23 Boys Tennis: Uncertainty prevails as ’Dogs seek to finalize lineup

Just days before the season-opening event, Colum- bus North boys tennis coach Kendal Hammel is unsure of the lineup that the Bull Dogs will field. Seniors Aditya Mantri and Kevin Luo will be in there somewhere, and so will junior Nathan VanDeventer. But exactly which spot each will play, that remains to be seen following intra-squad challenge matches in the final practices prior to the season-opening Jeffersonville Invita- tional on Friday and Saturday. Senior Daniel Larken, who paired with Van- Deventer last season for a 17-10 record at No. 2 doubles, appears set for a doubles spot again. But Mantri, who was 20-2 at No. 2 doubles in 2013 before missing last season, and Luo, 21-5 at No. 3 singles last season, are vying for the top singles position. So, too, is VanDeventer, although he could BACK AT YOU: Kevin Luo makes a return during a return to a doubles spot. match last season. He was 21-5 at No. 3 singles in 2014. Others in contention for varsity positions are junior Anay Gangal, junior Ammar Khaled, junior Lucas Huang, sophomore Ben Mathew and freshman Kevin Lin. In addition, senior Matt Klave or junior Walker Thomas could player their way into the mix. “There are so many possibilities,” Hammel said as he considered all the options. “Guys have improved from last year. It’s difficult to tell from day to day. One day Player A beats Player B, but the next day Player B beats Player A. It may be a case where a lot of players get a chance to play as we figure things out. “It’s a strong likelihood that there will be changes in the lineup, especially compared to last year when it was pretty set. This year, we’re not really sure, so guys will get chances as the season progresses. We also have some guys who can swing to singles or doubles.” The advantage that Mantri, Luo and VanDeventer have is their varsity experience. They have been there, they are athletic and they are capable of hitting the ball with velocity. Still, Hammel is uncertain if this year’s group can match the 20-4 season that the Bull Dogs posted in 2014. Those results included sectional and regional championships. “We may not be as strong as last season,” he said. “We don’t have the full set of big hitters that we had last year. We will have good depth, but we may not be as strong overall.” Columbus North was runner-up in the Conference Indiana Tournament last fall. This time, Hammel is confident that the Bull Dogs can fare well in the East Division against Franklin Central, Perry Meridian and Southport. But he expects the West Division schools (Bloomington South, Bloomington North, Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South) all to be capable. “We hope to compete with the top-level schools,” Hammel said. As mentioned, the season begins at Jeffersonville in an eight-school competition where teams are awarded points based on how play- ers perform in singles and doubles flights. Bloomington North, Guerin Catholic, Delta, Evansville Memorial, Jasper and Zionsville join the Bull Dogs and host Jeffersonville there. CN’s first dual match is next Monday at Plainfield. It faces Floyd Central on Aug. 26 at Seymour, then opens CI East Division action on Aug. 27 at home against Southport. The annual rivalry match with Columbus East is Sept. 2 at home, and matches against Perry Meridian and Center Grove are later that week.

August 18-Sept. 7, 2015 Bull Dog Bulletin 25 Volleyball: Seven seniors set to lead Bull Dogs in 2015 season

Seven seniors are set to step up in a big way for the 2015 Columbus North volleyball team. “We have the potential to do great things,” coach Caitlin Greiner said, noting the Bull Dogs graduated seven seniors and four three- year starters from a squad that went 20-14 a year ago. “It always is a goal to have a winning season, and I believe that is very realistic for us this year with our talent.” Even though the team looks to replace its 2014 graduates, the current seniors appear set to fill any voids in the rotation. Avery Wen- del, a 5-9 senior hitter who produced 171 kills and 30 blocks in 2014, is a team leader. “This season our team is looking pretty good,” Wendel said. “As a team, we all bond really well while we are on the court. I expect for us to accomplish a lot and just grow as a team.” Joining Wendel are 6-4 junior middle Imani Guy (172 kills, 84 blocks), 5-9 junior hitter Maliah Howard-Bass (71 kills, 109 digs), senior defensive specialist Grace Sonderman (131 digs) and junior defensive specialist Mackenzie Rooks (56 digs). Others with varsity expe- rience are senior Anne Marie Kiel, senior Hannah McKinney and junior Hannah Weaver. “I expect to go into the season with positive attitudes and for us to learn to play through bad calls and other things that can cause the tempo of the game to change,” Rooks said. “So that way, when it does happen, we can easily bounce back from it and be ready for the next ball.” Greiner said she is looking forward to the evolution of the team’s younger players. “We have several young players playing up, and it will be exciting to see how they develop,” the coach said. “Seeing how our team plays at the high level is something to look forward to.” Columbus North opens its season on Thursday at Shelbyville and follows by competing in the Eastern Greene Invitational on Satur- day. Home matches against Perry Meridian (Aug. 25) and Heritage Christian (Aug. 27) come next. “Obviously we want to have a winning season,” Greiner said. “On top of that, we would like to win the conference tourney as well as be a top team in the conference season matches.” (article by CN senior Anthony Rork)

CN’s Patberg helps USA Basketball U-19 Women capture gold

Columbus North High School graduate Ali Patberg completed play July 26 with the USA Basketball Under-19 National Team as the team won the gold medal in the FIBA Under-19 World Championship at Chekhov, Russia. Team USA went 7-0 over nine days in the event played about 50 miles south of Moscow. It has been quite a ride in a short time for Patberg, a 2015 CNHS grad and a Notre Dame recruit. “It feels amazing,” Patberg said shortly after the gold-medal game, a 78-70 victory over the host Russian team. “After the game, I thanked Carol (Callan, USA Basketball Women's National Team director). Obviously, I was so blessed to come and have the opportunity to try to help the team win a gold medal, and we did it. It feels second to none. I have never had this feeling before. So, it feels great.” Just a few months ago, Patberg and her CN teammates were striving to do all they could to go after an Indiana state championship. From March through July, Patberg helped her Bull Dogs win that state title, earned the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award, was voted Indiana’s Miss Basketball, took part in the McDonald’s and Jordan Brand Classic All-America games, took part in the USA Basketball Trials, helped Indiana to an All-Star sweep of Kentucky, was named to the USA Basketball Under-19 National Team and then helped that team to the World Championship. Patberg appeared in all seven games for Team USA at the World Championship, averaging 3.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. She also nearly posted two double-doubles in the tournament, collecting 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds against Argenti- na in the round of 16, and registering seven points and nine rebounds against Canada in the quarterfinals. Prior to the World Championship tournament, Team USA played three warm-up games in Murcia, Spain, a city near the Mediterra- nean Sea about 250 miles southeast of Madrid. In those games, Team USA defeated Australia (85-82), Canada (95-40) and Spain (75- 51). Patberg averaged 5.3 points in those three games (scoring seven, seven and two points) while playing for coaches Dawn Staley of South Carolina, Jeff Walz of Louisville and Kim Barnes Arico of Michigan. Somewhere during her busy summer, Patberg squeezed in a couple of weeks on campus at Notre Dame (for classes and basketball workouts) following the conclusion of the All-Star series and prior to reporting to the USA Basketball training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo. “I’m so proud of Ali and how she represented Notre Dame on the international stage,” Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. “The experience she gained playing with USA Basketball is going to be invaluable when she comes back to campus and we continue prepar- ing for the upcoming season.” Patberg is confident the experience she gained with USA Basketball will pay off when she returns to Notre Dame to resume practice prior to the start of her freshman season with the Irish. “I can tell it has already helped a lot,” Patberg said. “The pace was a lot quicker than what I have played before. And the knowledge of the game – I learned so much from all the coaches and all the players. I think my defense has gotten better. I have learned so much. I have become a better student of the game.” In an unusual twist, the United States is the only country in the world that does not adhere to the FIBA international rules of basket- ball, although the NCAA has adopted several rule changes for the 2015-16 season, including 10-minute quarters and two bonus free throws upon the fifth team foul in each period. Yet, it was not the rules but the style of play that taught Patberg the most during her USA Basketball experience. “The level of play is much more physical than I was used to,” she said. “Each country has a different style, so that took time to get accustomed to. I liked the way the Australians play as they are constantly moving without the ball – just like coaches always tell us to do.”

Columbus North sophomore Michael Brinegar and junior Grace Haskett have had significant success in the pool over the summer. Brinegar, a distance freestyle swimmer, has been cited by USA Swimming as one of 22 athletes aged 16 and younger who could be a “disruptor” at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. This distinction comes after Brinegar, swimming for Golden West Swim Club based in Huntington Beach, Calif., placed 21st in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 15 minutes, 37.51 seconds at the Phillips 66 Nationals at San Antonio, Texas. He also was 69th in the 400-meter free in 4:02.33 at the Nationals that were held Aug. 6-10. “I’m not sure about the ‘disruptor’ label, but it is nice for my hard work to be recognized,” Brinegar said. “I hope with another year of hard training to be compet- ONE TO WATCH: Columbus North swimmer Michael Brinegar itive with the top swimmers nex summer at the Olympic has been labeled a potential “disruptor” for the 2016 Olympic Trials. Trials.” Earlier, Brinegar placed ninth in the 1,500-meter free in 15:46.61 in the Speedo Junior Nationals that were contested July 30-Aug. 3 at San Antonio. In addition, Brinegar was 14th in the 800-meter free in 8:15.10 and 35th in the 400-meter free in 4:01.51 in that meet. “After a summer of really hard training with (GWSC coach) Mark Schubert, I was pleased to improve my time in all of my distanc- es,” Brinegar said. “The training was really hard, but I think it will pay off for me down the road.” Haskett, competing for Donner Swim Club, also competed at the Junior Nationals. She finished 50th in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:04.79 and 76th in the 50-meter free in 27.19. Also of note were results from 2014 CNHS graduate Cody Taylor, who competed in two events at the Phillips 66 Nationals. The In- diana University sophomore placed 48th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:19.27 and 74th in the 100-meter breast in 1:04.51.
