WWW.CHICAGOSOCCER.NET EXCEPTIONAL INNOVATIVE FAMILY The Chargers (3-1) are headed to Park! They will play for the second straight year at the Fire Stadium for 3rd place against Joliet Central High School. Last Saturday the Chargers worked hard for their win against rival Reavis in a well played game. The rematch featured some of the best soccer seen in the Windy City Classic and St. Joseph showed heart to earn the victory. Seniors Ruben Estrada and Jose Carrera got St. Joseph started with two goals in the first half. It came down to the last minute of the game when Patrick Brown converted on a well placed header off a free kick to punch the Chargers ticket to the Final Four. Although St. Joseph played great against Reavis, they fell short against Argo on Tuesday night. Two mistakes led to the first loss of the and Argo slipped by after holding off the Char- gers 22 shots on . The team remains confident despite the setback and has learned from the experience. Goalkeeper, Dontae Gillespie, is confident in managing the backline and is ready to gain the momentum back!

Dontae Gillespie: “Although we slipped up against Argo our defense kept the pressure up to give us a chance in the offensive third. We know we are better, we know we can win if we continue to stay organized and patient on the field.”

Octavio Gutierrez:“In my past few years I’ve seen how this team has been so close and unified. Niemiec always tells us how communication is important as a team, but they don’t get along just as a team, but as a family. It’s really an honor playing with them. I’m looking forward to this season because it will have a lot in store for us no doubt.”

France beats 2-1 in Euro 2012 qualifier France beat Albania 2-1 in a Euro 2012 qualifier Friday despite a shaky defensive performance to increase its lead atop Group D. France striker opened the scoring with a low drive in the 11th minute and Yann M'Vila doubled the lead by firing home a diagonal shot in the 18th. Albania forward beat goalkeeper to pull one back in the 46th. The hosts had spells of domination in the second half but France held on to its lead. France tops Group D with 16 points, three clear of Bosnia-Herzegovina. European champion in 2000, France is unde- feated in its last 12 matches and will visit on Tuesday. "I'm satisfied tonight,'' France coach told TF1 television. "We came here to win, but we knew it would be complicated.'' "In spite of all the respect I have for Albania, we were superior to them in this match.'' France converted its first scoring chance after 10 minutes when Benzema cut inside to unleash from the edge of the box a low shot that Albania goalkeeper Saimir Ujkani could only palm into the bottom corner. Albania nearly equalized the following minute, taking advantage of a nervy Younes Kaboul. The France centerback lost possession near his own area and Bogdani quickly fed winger , whose chip hit the bar. Kaboul then missed a header in the 16th, forcing Lloris to come off his line to beat Salihi to the ball. France has mostly relied on the pair of centerbacks formed by Philippe Mexes and to anchor the defense in this qualifying campaign. But AC Milan defender Mexes is recovering from a knee injury and was therefore not available while Valencia defender Rami was suspended for the match in , leaving Blanc with very little choice at centerback. France overcame that minor scare by adding a second goal in the 18th. Rennes M'Vila released Benzema down the right flank. The Real forward skipped past Kristi Vangjeli to play the ball back to M'Vila, who netted with a shot from 16 yards. That two-goal deficit how- ever did not discourage the Albanians. Albania midfielder chested down a poor clearance from the France defense to crack a half-volley that Lloris turned around the post in the 31st. Benzema outpaced the Albania defense to be clean through on goal in the 36th but Admir Teli fouled him to earn a yellow card. Bayern winger Franck Ribery took the ensuing free kick that Ujkani tipped over the bar. Albania put France under pressure at the start of the second half. made a long pass for Bogdani in the 46th. and Kaboul beat the Albania forward to the ball, but some poor communication between the two France centerbacks helped Bogdani win the ball to slip the ball through the legs of Lloris. "We conceded this goal that took away a bit of the confidence we had in the first half,'' Blanc said. The France defense was again exposed in the 59th. Albania fullback Vangjeli charged down the left flank to cut the ball back for substitute Jahmir Hyka, whose close-range effort was blocked by Abidal. But Bulku pounced on the rebound to fire a powerful drive that Lloris punched away. City midfielder had no influence on France's passing game and did very little until the 69th when he hit a low drive straight at Ujkani. France pushed hard in the last minutes to add a third goal. Ribery made a solo run in the 81st to pull the ball back for Chelsea winger but rushed back to clear the ball. Kaboul outjumped the Albania defense from the ensuing corner but his header crashed against the post. Manchester United leftback then set up Nasri, whose effort from 13 yards bounced off the post in the 86th. "Of course we can improve,'' Blanc said. "We can always do better offensively. But we scored two goals, created a lot of chances and hit the post twice. Our offense is clicking better and we've managed to put our opponent in trouble.'' Spain beats Chile 3-2 in friendly

Cesc Fabregas scored a penalty at the second attempt in injury time to give a 3-2 win over Chile in a friendly on Friday. Midfielder Isla Mauricio and forward put Chile ahead, but Andres Iniesta came off the bench in the second half to score with a long strike before setting up Fabregas for the equalizer. Chile looked set to salvage a draw until Fernando Meneses fouled Real Madrid de- fender Alvaro Arbeloa in the area. Chile goalkeeper blocked Fabregas’ spot kick, but the new midfielder tapped in the rebound for the victory. Fabregas gave all the credit to Iniesta. “I wasn’t the game changer, it was Andres who turned the game around,’’ Fabregas said. “He was incredible. He scored the goal that gave us hope and made the pass to me for the second that I only had to touch to put in.’’ Spain continues its defense of its European title on Tuesday when it hosts Liechtenstein in a Euro 2012 qualifier. The world champions are in first place in Group I, six points ahead of second-place . Chile will also visit Spain to play Mexico in a friendly in Barcelona on Sunday. After a lackluster first half, Spain looked ready to flop yet again in friendlies against quality opponents. But Spain coachVicente del Bosque made wholesale changes that completely changed the game. Midfielder Hernandez made his 102nd appearance for La Roja atAFG Arena, equaling Raul Gonzalez as Spain’s most capped outfield player. Chile took the initiative from the start, pressing up the pitch with a defensive line of three and Barcelona’s new signing Alexis Sanchez spearing the attack. The payoff came in the 10th when Isla latched on to West Bromwich Albion defender ’s long pass and blasted it past Spain goalkeeper into the top left corner of the net. Just when Spain’s passing game was showing signs of coming to life, Vargas combined with Sanchez to break Spain’s defensive line before rounding Casillas and rolling in Chile’s second in the 20th. Iniesta came on for at the beginning of the second half and took 10 minutes to halve Spain’s deficit with a bouncing strike from outside the area. Del Bosque sent on more reinforcements and Spain’s fresh legs cut off Chile’s flow in attack. Spain drew level in the 71st when Iniesta played Fabregas through the center of the defense for his new teammate to slot under Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Chile was left with 10 men from the 83rd after was shown a red card for a hard tackle on Santi Cazorla. Spain’s strong second-half performance should help calm worries that the growing friction between Barcelona and Real Madrid has spread to the Spanish national team. YOUR AD HERE 773.217.9560

WWW.CHICAGOSOCCER.NET Rodney Wallace scores, Costa Rica beats US 1-0 Rodney Wallace scored to lead Costa Rica to a 1-0 win over the on Friday night, giving Jurgen Klinsmann a loss in his second match as U.S. coach. “Bad result,’’ Klinsmann said. “Never like to lose a game, but very good perfor- mance. I was pleased with the performance. I was pleased with the way all the players tried to implement all the work that we did on the training field throughout the week. ... What I told the guys in the locker room was that from a performance point of view, it was very, very positive, what we saw.’’ In Klinsmann’s first game as coach, the United States tied Mexico 1-1 on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia. The Costa Ricans took the lead in the 65th minute when Wallace scored on a header off a rebound after goalkeeper stopped a shot. The Maryland- raised defender was playing his first match for Costa Rica. The Americans came out lively in the opening 20 minutes, but as the match wore on the Americans were drawn into a physical match that featured five yellow cards. “I want them to go through those kind of down periods in games,’’ Klinsmann said. “We saw here and there players get- ting tired or a couple minutes where they were struggling. But they need to learn to go through those minutes. They need to fight their way through it. And you saw they got a second breath, a third breath and they did excellent.’’ The United States had its chances in the second half, the best coming in the 71st minute when Jose Francisco Torres fired a shot that was saved by goalkeeper . The United States will return to action Sept. 6 against Belgium in Brussels. “I think there’s no question tonight is going to benefit us,’’ U.S. star said. “There’s a lot to learn from tonight. A lot of our young players will now see you can dominate a team, dominate possession and have the majority of the ball and still lose.’’

Ronaldinho given World Cup hope by Menezes After rediscovering his form, fitness and passion for football, Ronald- inho has been given hope he can re-establish himself as a permanent fixture in the team through to the 2014 World Cup on home soil. The two-time world player of the year will play his first game for his national team in 10 months when the Brazilians take on Ghana in an in- ternational friendly in on Monday. A string of impressive displays for Flamengo in the Brazilian league persuaded Brazil coach to recall the 31-year-old , who is now being viewed not just a supremely gifted player but also a mentor to the country’s new wave of talent. “This isn’t a temporary solution,’’ Menezes said Sunday. “It’s important for the Brazilians to have someone like Ronaldinho, with his experience and his history with the Brazil team, with a World Cup coming up. Alongside the younger players, he will try to build the Brazil team so we can get to the next stage (in their develop- ment) and then to the World Cup. “Yes, there’s a long time to go yet but a player like Ronaldinho has got the qualities we need. It’s about playing well at this time and he’s been doing that with Flamengo so I do believe he is able to play at the World Cup.’’ A world champion in 2002, Ron- aldinho was one of the best players of the last decade but after a glitter- ing, trophy-laden spell at Spanish giant Barcelona between 2003-08, his career nosedived at AC Milan. Back in Brazilian football and a scorer of 10 goals for Flamengo this season, he is again playing with a smile on his face and Menezes had no qualms in bring- ing him out of the international wilderness for the match at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground in southwest London. “He needed time to adapt to being home again and that’s what I was looking for - to see if he could play regularly, play well and enjoy himself,’’ Menezes said. “Ronaldinho brings a lot. He is a leader, has that technical part to his game and he is a player you can rely on to help with all the young players coming into the team now.’’ And Ronaldinho’s teammates are happy to have him back. “As a player, we all know what he is capable of,’’ said , the Liverpool defensive midfielder. “He’s been out of the Brazil squad for a few months but whenever he comes back to the national team, we have a lot of respect because he has such a great history. “We hope he can help the young players develop to a good level. But he wants to keep going and play in the next World Cup as well.’’ Menezes has turned to Ronaldinho after seeing his team eliminated from the Copa America at the quarterfinal stage, on penalties to Paraguay, and then lose 3-2 to Germany in a friendly last month. In 13 matches in charge of Brazil, Menezes has six wins, three losses and four draws and with the rebuilding job after the 2010 World Cup not going as smoothly as planned, he is starting to come under severe pressure. Outwardly at least, Menezes appears unruffled.

tevez’s advisor says striker could settle at City

After failing to secure a move away from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, striker has been joined in England by his wife and could settle down at the club if his family situation improves. Tevez said in July he wanted to leave City for a country where he could be reunited with his wife Vanesa and two daughters, who all moved back to Argentina after struggling to adapt to the British climate and culture. However, with no club able to meet both City’s asking price for Tevez and his wage demands, he is still at the Etihad Stadium and his advisor, , said Thursday the player has managed to convince Vanesa to return to Manchester. “As Carlos said at the end of the season, professionally he is happy at the club. He is happy in the situation - it was more to do with his family really,’’ Joorabchian told British radio station talkSPORT. “If she (Tevez’s wife) manages to settle in hopefully in the next four or five months, maybe he will settle down and things will be fine. “Culturally, Milan or Spain would be easier for the wife to adapt to. She could get around and communicate better. That was the major problem but the next four or five months will be very important.’’

Joorabchian said only a handful of clubs in the world could afford to sign Tevez, who is widely reported to be City’s top earner.

“You can get down to teams like Inter, who made a couple of offers, and maybe Real Madrid,’’ Joorabchian said. “You can really narrow it down to four or five teams in the world.’’

He faces a battle to get back in City’s team, with Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko scoring six goals in his first three league matches.

Palmeiras fans banned from stadiums after fight

The Sao Paulo state soccer federation has banned a Palmeiras fan group from lo- cal stadiums after a confrontation with police ended with two supporters being shot. The federation says in a statement Thursday that the ban for the Man- cha Alviverde group will last until authorities finish their investiga- tion and punish those responsible for the confrontation. One of the fans shot before Sunday’s match against Corinthi- ans in Presidente Prudente remains in serious condition. The ban comes after police admitted that the shots may have come from officers trying to contain the alter- cation. The case remains under investigation. Eight-time champion Palmeiras is the fourth most popular club in Brazil, behind Fla- mengo, Corinthians and Sao Paulo.

Botswana to host COSAFA U-20 The Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) announced on that Botswana will host the U-20 tournament in December 2011. This is the second successive year for Botswana to host the tournament since 2010. Speaking at the launch of the tournament in Gaborone on Tuesday, Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) chairper- son Solly Reikeletseng said it is an honour for the country to be hosting a tournament of this magnitude for the second successive time. He said it is clear proof that COSAFA were never disappointed with the way Botswana hosted the competition last year. “It shows that we were good and this is really appreciated.” The U-20 tournament is one of the biggest youth soccer spectacles in Southern Africa which has produced some of the finest talents Southern Africa has exported to the world. Among renowned names from the tournament recently is Zimbabwean Knowledge Mu- sona who made waves at South Africa Glamour Club Kaizer Chiefs before being snatched up by German side 1899 Hoffenheim at the end of last season. Another player who was spotted in the COSAFA tournament is South African Thulani Serero who made a transfer of 24 million rand (4.8 million U.S. dollars) to Dutch giants Ajax from Ajax Cape town. Meanwhile, Botswana Under-20 side has been drawn in Group A together with Comoros, Swaziland and Mozambique. In Group B, the Seychelles will lock horns with Malawi and Lesotho in the only group that consists of three countries. There is however concern over Malawi availability with travel bans imposed on all national teams following political unrest in the country. There is hope however for the organizing committee that the situation will be solved before the start of the tournament. In Group C, Zambia will battle it out with South Africa, Mauritius and Tanzania. Both Zambia and South Africa are seen as favourites to win the tournament. Tanzania are the new comers this year after COSAFA extended an invitation to them. In Group D, Angola, Madagascar, Namibia and Zimbabwe will battle it out. While Zimbabwe will always be seen as one of the giants in the region, Namibia were a surprise package last year. They defeated South Africa on their way to reach- ing the final for the first time.
