PETITION OF THE JEWS OF ENGLAND TO THE PEACE CONFERENCE [TO INCORPORATE THE PROVISIONS OF THE BALFOUR DECLARATION INTO THE PEACE CONFERENCE] 2 BROADSIDES ONE IN ENGLISH AND ONE IN YIDDISH. London, English Zionist Federation, [1918]. A pair of broadsides, one in English (41.5 x 26 cm) and one in Yiddish asking British Jews to sign a petition to request that the Peace Conference should make provisions to incorporate the Balfour Declaration into the negotiations. The Paris Peace Conference was convened in January 1919 with the aim of securing future world peace. The conference concluded a number of treaties. The remaking of the world map at the conference gave birth to a number of critical conflict prone international contradictions, which would fuel World War II. The conference led to the creation of the League of Nations. [ref: 18314 ] £1,250 2 2. PROCLAMATION OF MARTIAL LAW IN JERUSALEM - ALLENBY [1918] ALLENBY, Edmund (Field Marshal, 1st Viscount Allenby, 1861-1936) Comparisons of German and British Military Law (Judeo-Arabic headline). [No place, but probably Jerusalem, no date, but probably early 1918]. Large poster, (745 x 485 mm.), folded, text printed in Judeo-Arabic, English and French, borders printed in red. (One vertical and 3 horizontal creasefolds, insignificant chipping and tiny marginal nick to top left-hand corner, otherwise in fine condition.) EXTREMELY RARE PROPAGANDA PIECE, comparing British martial law with that of the recently defeated German-backed Ottomans. Allenby states that it is his intention not to intervene with lawful business and to maintain the religious status quo. This is contrasted with an edict by Colonel Gloss [German], that all workers over the age 15, are compelled to work in the fields from 4am-8pm, otherwise various punishments, including 'slacker companies' overseen by German corporals, imprisonment, and corporal punishment, will be inflicted. The language of Judeo-Arabic suggests that the audience for this poster would have been parts of the old yishuv, Sephardi Jews and other citizens of the Ottoman Empire. [ref: 18308 ] £1,500 3 3. WEIZMANN AND SOKOLOW. - EREZ YISRAEL BAAD AM YISROEL. THE LAND OF ISRAEL FOR THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL. London, 1917. 4pp. 28.5 x 23 cm. Contains the Balfour Declaration in Hebrew and Yiddish and an article in Yiddish signed by Sokolow and Weizmann giving the history of Zionism and a call to action for people to implement the National Home. Dated 17th Kislev 5678 Sunday 2nd December 1917. Appears unrecorded. [ref: 18315 ] £750 4 4. TRANSLATION OF SPEECH MADE BY KAMIL AL-HUSAYNI, THE GRAND MUFTI OF JERUSALEM AT A TEA PARTY GIVEN AT HIS HOUSE IN HONOUR OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS COMMITTEE, 31ST JULY, 1918 In March 1918 the American Red Cross sent a Commission to Palestine. This appears to be a speech giving a report the trip to Palestine by the American Red Cross. A highlight of the trip was a speech given by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem to the American Red Cross Committee. A translation from the Arabic is given at the beginning of the document. He seems very well disposed towards the Americans and the British. “Joy and gladness to you and may God be praised … No one can wonder at this when you are the Children of so generous a Mother, the great nation, I mean Great Britain with her glorious past and exalted glory…On behalf of these in general and Moslems in particular I burn incense on the altars of gratitude … I close by praying for His Majesty King George and his nation, for the President of the United States , Mr Wilson” An interesting document that appears to be a speech given at a dinner describing the trip. It describes the preparations for the trip, the journey and their time in Palestine. 13 pages of typescript. The document describes the preparations for the trip, the loading of the ship “City of York” Full of interesting little details. “The Stewards are mostly Indian boys, ….. They speak Hindustani and dress in native costume…” Cont’d overleaf 5 “This Commission was asked for by the British Government for the purpose of taking over the civilian relief work in the Near East….” They went via South Africa, then Egypt, they are hosted by Lady Allenby. There is a whole list of things which have been done under British Occupation including: 1. A pure water supply piped to Jerusalem, 2 Beautiful new roads have been built,…. 6. Food rations have been given to all…13. Arab, Jew and Christian have been treated alike and with fairness. Then there is a description of some of the relief work carried out in Palestine. There is a reference to the political situation and the Balfour Declaration. On the way home they stop in Poland and this is described. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem is the Sunni Muslim cleric in charge of Jerusalem's Islamic holy places, including the Al-Aqsa Mosque.[1] The position was created by the British military government led by Ronald Storrs in 1918.[ Kamil al-Husayni ] [ref: 18303 ] £1,500 5. THE EARL OF BALFOUR (ARTHUR BALFOUR) - EDITED BY ISRAEL COHEN. SPEECHES ON ZIONISM London Arrowsmith 1928 Foreword by Sir Herbert Samuel. Original cloth, dj, 18cm, 128 pp, very good condition. An interesting collection of speeches delivered at important events in the 1920s by a seminal figure in Zionist history. It includes his defence of the Mandate in the House of Lords, a speech he gave in America and several speeches when he went to Palestine in 1925 for the opening of the Hebrew University. [ref: 18316 ] £250 6 6. ENGLISH ZIONIST FEDERATION. - GREAT BRITAIN, PALESTINE AND THE JEWS. JEWRY'S CELEBRATION OF ITS NATIONAL CHARTER (ENGLISH AND YIDDISH) London, The Zionist Organisation, 1918 Both in English and Yiddish. 20cm, 59 + 68p. [The spine is taped - it is possible that these were 2 separate publications that have been put together] There are a large number of statements by prominent Jews from around the world. As Dr. Wise noted “The Declaration has transferred Zionism from the field of national aspirations to the realm of political fact.” Both sides start with the Declaration – so there is a full translation of the Declaration into Yiddish. [ref: 18317 ] £350 THE 1929 DISTURBANCES From the 23rd to the 29th August 1929,there were major Arab riots across Palestine most notably in Hebron, Jerusalem and Safed. There was a long running dispute between Jews and Muslims relating to access to the Western Wall which flared up and there werer several major incidents leading to the death of 133 Jews and 339 injured, and 110 Arabs were killed and 232 were injured. The community in Hebron came to an end as many members of the community were killed and the survivors relocated. The next 4 items relate to these events, of which 3 are proclamations issued by Sir John Chancellor, the High Commissioner for Palestine and one from the Palestine Arab Executive. 7 7. CHANCELLOR, SIR JOHN. - MANSHUR [PROCLAMATION] - SIR JOHN CHANCELLOR 1929 POGROMS, SEPTEMBER 1ST 1929 Jerusalem Government of Palestine 1929 A proclamation from Sir John Chancellor who was the British High Commissioner for Palestine from December 1928 to November 1931. • Economia Della Palestina E Sionismo Nel Pensiero Di Riccardo Bachi
PAROLE CHIAVE - Riccardo Bachi, economia e religione, sionismo, nazionalismo economico ABSTRACT - The Palestinian economy and Zionism in Riccardo Bachi’s thought: Riccardo Bachi was one of the most authoritative and prolific scholars of statistics and applied economics in Italy between the two wars.

  • Can It Be That Our Dormant Language Has Been Wholly Revived?”: Vision, Propaganda, and Linguistic Reality in the Yishuv Under the British Mandate
Zohar Shavit “Can It Be That Our Dormant Language Has Been Wholly Revived?”: Vision, Propaganda, and Linguistic Reality in the Yishuv Under the British Mandate ABSTRACT “Hebraization” was a project of nation building—the building of a new Hebrew nation. Intended to forge a population comprising numerous lan- guages and cultural affinities into a unified Hebrew-speaking society that would actively participate in and contribute creatively to a new Hebrew- language culture, it became an integral and vital part of the Zionist narrative of the period. To what extent, however, did the ideal mesh with reality? The article grapples with the unreliability of official assessments of Hebrew’s dominance, and identifies and examines a broad variety of less politicized sources, such as various regulatory, personal, and commercial documents of the period as well as recently-conducted oral interviews. Together, these reveal a more complete—and more complex—portrait of the linguistic reality of the time. INTRODUCTION The project of making Hebrew the language of the Jewish community in Eretz-Israel was a heroic undertaking, and for a number of reasons. Similarly to other groups of immigrants, the Jewish immigrants (olim) who came to Eretz-Israel were required to substitute a new language for mother tongues in which they were already fluent. Unlike other groups Israel Studies 22.1 • doi 10.2979/israelstudies.22.1.05 101 102 • israel studies, volume 22 number 1 of immigrants, however, they were also required to function in a language not yet fully equipped to respond to all their needs for written, let alone spoken, communication in the modern world.

  • Twenty-Five Years at the Valmadonna Trust Library
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Hochschulschriftenserver - Universität Frankfurt am Main Twenty-Five Years at the Valmadonna Trust Library by Pauline Malkiel Librarian – Valmadonna Trust Library (London, England) When I first walked into the library in May 1982 I was struck initially by the smell of leather, then by the rows upon rows of fine bindings in burgundies, browns, beiges and creams packed neatly and tastefully on elegant open wooden shelves. Looking more closely I began to identify groupings: 16th century Italian locations with exciting names like Riva di Trento, Sabbionetta and Ferrara; whole areas of early Venetian printers – Bomberg, di Gara, Zanetti, each in its own space; a whole wall devoted to early Mediterranean printing in Salonika, Constantinople, and Prague, Lublin and Cracow. Then there were vast ranges of small liturgies of many different rites – Italian, Spanish, Roman, Ashkenazic, Aleppo, Karaite - sitting chronologically on shelves in beautiful bindings. Another area was devoted to Bibles printed in Venice starting in the year 1517. Placed in their own taller alcoves were stately volumes of Rabbinic Bibles and Maimonides Commentaries, Mishneh Torahs, Alfassi Commentaries in different editions, and, on closer inspection of the spines, many recurring titles such as ‘Semag,’ ‘Mizrachi,’’Rabenu Bechai,’’Perush HaTorah’ and endless Responsa. It was a thrill to see the word ‘unicum’ or ‘unique copy’ on a spine, and there were numerous slipcases containing ‘Variant 1’ and ‘Variant 2’ copies, promising intriguing revelations. Examining the spines one could decipher an exotic array of practically unheard-of place names: Kuru Tschesme, Prostitz, Isny, Constanz, Trino, Dordrecht, Pforzheim, Alcala de Henares and then, tucked away in a corner, all the very early 16th century Latin works printed by the Soncinos in Fano, Ortona, Pesaro, Cesena and so on.

  • Ethnicity and Education: Nation-Building, State-Formation, and the Construction of the Israeli Educational System
ETHNICITY AND EDUCATION: NATION-BUILDING, STATE-FORMATION, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ISRAELI EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM GAL LEVY A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR PHD DEGREE THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 2002 2 ABSTRACT The dissertation is about the ethnicisation of social relations in Israeli society and its reflection and manifestation in education. My main aim in this study is twofold: first, to offer a critical account of the development of ethnic relations in Israeli society and to examine the role ethnicity has played in the processes of nation-building and state-formation; and, second, to propose a history of the educational system in Israel which accounts for the role of education in creating and perpetuating ethnic identities. The first part of the dissertation consists of a critical reading of existing analyses of ethnicity in Israel. Its aim is to bring the state into the analysis of ethnic relations and demonstrate that such an approach is vital to the understanding of ethnic relations and identities. In the following part, I trace back the processes of nation-building and state-formation demonstrating how governments and major political actors became involved in the formation and re-production of ethnic boundaries within Israeli society. In these two parts, I am arguing against both functionalist and critical accounts of ethnicity in Israel, which tend to ‘essentialise’ ethnic categories and thus deny the political nature of ethnicity and its power as an organising basis for political action. In the third and major part of the dissertation, I seek to re-construct the history of the Israeli educational system within an understanding of ethnicity as a structural feature of state-society relations.

  • University Vs. Society in a Period of Nation Building: the Hebrew University in Pre-State Israel
04 FINAL Cohen:Layout 1 6/29/07 2:37 PM Page 81 Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation ARTICLES / ARTICLES University vs. Society in a Period of Nation Building: The Hebrew University in Pre-State Israel Uri Cohen ABSTRACT This article examines the process by which the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was established, from 1925-1948, during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. It finds that the World Zionist Organization was deeply involved in this project, viewing a university as an important building block in the creation of a Jewish nationality in the Land of Israel. But alongside this Zionist role, Jewish communities around the world, particularly in Europe and the United States, also played an important academic and financial role in the establishment of the Hebrew Uni - versity. This study reveals that, in contrast to the common pattern of close cooperation that is characteristic of relations between academic institutions and cohering national elites, the Hebrew University consistently pursued an academic policy that generated acute tension vis-à-vis the political leadership in Jewish Palestine. The University deliberately nurtured an elitist policy while rejecting attempts to make it service the general public needs, as defined by the local polit - ical leadership. Rather, the University saw its central role as being a “university for the dispersed nation,” that is, a university for all of the Jewish people. RÉSUMÉ Cet article examine le processus au cours duquel l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem fut établie de 1925 à 1948, alors que la Palestine était sous mandat britannique.
