It has been worked upon as an ethical concept by ancient and modern philosophers. Hospitality is also a very broad term, starting with its familiar every-day usage and extending to topics such as migration, refugees, the other, the stranger and moving on to include the modern commercial hospitality sector. My aim is to take a holistic look at the concept of hospitality in the Islamicate civilization, in its normative and practical dimensions. This involves normative dimensions of hospitality in Islamic thought and the practical dimension, which is a case study of the great traveller Ibn Battuta’s travelogue in terms of the hospitality that he was received with along his vast journeys. The normative dimension includes hospitality in primary Islamic sources of the Quran and the Sunnah, which provides the base for all Islamic ethical system. Moreover, it also includes the codification of Islamic ethics with the formation of futuwwa thought and organization in the ninth century Islamicate world. Here, I look at the principles of futuwwa in the futuwwa books, akhism and and zawiyas. In the practical dimension I want to answer the question of how these hospitality norms were applied in real life Islamicate civilization, a case study to look at the overlap between the normative and the practical. The time range set for the practical dimension is Marshall Hodgson’s “Middle Periods” of the Islamicate civilization (950-1500 A.D.). These were flourishing times of Islamicate civil networks and institutions. The aim in this part is to look at how some of these institutions embodied the ethical notion of hospitality in their practices. In order to analyze this, I chose Ibn Battuta’s travelogue as it is considered one of the most important books representing the society and the living conditions of the time. In this part I analyze Ibn Battuta’s travelogue the Rihla, in terms of his experiences of being hosted as a traveller around the Islamicate world. Bununla beraber misafirperverlik gündelik hayattaki kullanımının dışında göç, göçmenler, öteki, yabancı gibi kavaramlara alakalı olup; bunun da ötesinde günümüzdeki ticari konaklama sektörüne kadar uzanan oldukça geniş bir kullanım alanına sahiptir. Bu çalışmadaki amaç İslam medeniyetindeki misafirperverlik kavramını normatif ve pratik boyutlarıyla bütüncül bir bakış açısından ele almaktır. Normatif boyut İslam düşüncesi üzeriden; pratik boyut ise meşhur seyyah İbn Battuta’nın seyahatnamesindeki yolculuklarında karşılaştığı misafirperverlik örnekleri üzerinden incelenecektir. Misafirpervelik normatif açıdan, İslamın temel kaynakları olan ve Islami etik sistemin temelini oluşturan Kuran ve Sünnet baz alınarak incelenecektir. Buna ek olarak normatif kısım on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İslam dünyasındaki fütüvvet düşüncesi ve teşkilatının oluşumu sürecinindeki ahlaki değerleri kapsar. Bu kısımda fütüvvet kitaplarındaki temel ilkeler, ahilik ve zaviyeler incelenmektedir. Pratik kısımda ise, örnek bir çalışma üzerinden bu misafirperverlik kurallarının İslam medeniyetinde gerçek hayatta nasıl uygulandığı sorusuna yanıt aranmaktadır. Pratik boyut için belirlenen tarihi dönem Marshall Hodgson’un İslam medeniyetinin “Middle Periods”u olarak tanımladığı 950- 1500 yılları arasını kapsar. Bu dönem İslami sivil ağların ve kuruluşların gelişip yaygınlık kazandığı bir zaman dilimidir. Buradaki amaç bu kuruluşların misafirperverliği uygulamalarında nasıl içselleştirdiklerini incelemektir. Bunun için dönemin toplumsal yaşam şartlarını en iyi şekilde temsil eden kitaplardan birisi olan İbn Battuta’nın seyahatnamesini ele almaktayım. İbn Battuta’nın Rıhle’sini, İslam dünyasının önemli bir seyyahı olması açısından kendi misafir ediliş deneyimleri üzerinden analiz etmekteyim. Upon their return to their homes, both Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo wrote about their adventures. Their stories were very influential in stimulating trade and travel in the regions they visited. Ibn Battuta’s desire to see the lands where his fellow Muslims lived led him across Asia, Africa, and Europe and the seas. His nearly thirty years of travel began when he was twenty-one when he set off for a pilgrimage to Mecca. After that, he traveled over 75,000 miles. Ibn Battuta traveled by joining trading caravans. Caravans were bands of travelers who journeyed together for security and mutual aid. He told of his adventures when he returned home to Morocco, and those who heard his stories thought they should be written down. The sultan of Morocco commissioned a young court secretary named Ibn Juzayy to listen to Ibn Battuta’s stories and record them. It took two years to write everything down, and when they were finished, the result was the Rihla, a story of travels centered on a pilgrimage.

    The Question of ‘Race’ in the Pre-colonial Southern Sahara BRUCE S. HALL One of the principle issues that divide people in the southern margins of the Sahara Desert is the issue of ‘race.’ Each of the countries that share this region, from Mauritania to Sudan, has experienced civil violence with racial overtones since achieving independence from colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. Today’s crisis in Western Sudan is only the latest example. However, very little academic attention has been paid to the issue of ‘race’ in the region, in large part because southern Saharan racial discourses do not correspond directly to the idea of ‘race’ in the West. For the outsider, local racial distinctions are often difficult to discern because somatic difference is not the only, and certainly not the most important, basis for racial identities. In this article, I focus on the development of pre-colonial ideas about ‘race’ in the Hodh, Azawad, and Niger Bend, which today are in Northern Mali and Western Mauritania. The article examines the evolving relationship between North and West Africans along this Sahelian borderland using the writings of Arab travellers, local chroniclers, as well as several specific documents that address the issue of the legitimacy of enslavement of different West African groups. Using primarily the Arabic writings of the Kunta, a politically ascendant Arab group in the area, the paper explores the extent to which discourses of ‘race’ served growing nomadic power. My argument is that during the nineteenth century, honorable lineages and genealogies came to play an increasingly important role as ideological buttresses to struggles for power amongst nomadic groups and in legitimising domination over sedentary communities.

    Classical Persian Literature Bahman Solati (Ph.D), 2015 University of California, Berkeley [email protected] Introduction Studying the roots of a particular literary history enables us to better understand the allusions the literature transmits and why we appreciate them. It also allows us to foresee how the literature may progress.1 I will try to keep this attitude in the reader’s mind in offering this brief summary of medieval Persian literature, a formidable task considering the variety and wealth of the texts and documentation on the subject.2 In this study we will pay special attention to the development of the Persian literature over the last millennia, focusing in particular on the initial development and background of various literary genres in Persian. Although the concept of literary genres is rather subjective and unstable,3 reviewing them is nonetheless a useful approach for a synopsis, facilitating greater understanding, deeper argumentation, and further speculation than would a simple listing of dates, titles, and basic biographical facts of the giants of Persian literature. Also key to literary examination is diachronicity, or the outlining of literary development through successive generations and periods. Thriving Persian literature, undoubtedly shaped by historic events, lends itself to this approach: one can observe vast differences between the Persian literature of the tenth century and that of the eleventh or the twelfth, and so on.4 The fourteenth century stands as a bridge between the previous and the later periods, the Mongol and Timurid, followed by the Ṣafavids in Persia and the Mughals in India. Given the importance of local courts and their support of poets and writers, it is quite understandable that literature would be significantly influenced by schools of thought in different provinces of the Persian world.5 In this essay, I use the word literature to refer to the written word adeptly and artistically created.

Kent Brown, who has been a major help to me at pivotal points in my career. I first went to the Middle East in a Jerusalem semester abroad group that he led during the first half of 1978. And then, when I returned to Egypt in the autumn of 1978 with my new bride, it was Kent Brown who met us at the Cairo airport and allowed us to stay with his family until we found housing of our own. He was also instrumental in setting the stage for my receiving a job offer at Brigham Young University and has remained a valued colleague, a friend, and a model of Christian liv- ing ever since. These notes were first compiled in a 1981 graduate seminar at the American University in Cairo for Professor George Scanlan. Despite my intention of getting back to the subject, however, I had not. So, when I was invited to contribute to this volume in honor of a friend whom my wife and I will always associate with our time in Egypt, it seemed a good opportunity to resurrect something that I commenced there. My hope is either to pursue this topic further myself or, at least, to encourage some other researcher to look at it. Beyond minor mechanical changes (the paper was written on a 288 Ƶ Daniel C. Peterson typewriter), I have also made explicit some of the similarities that I perceive between the movements described here and the Gadian- ton robbers of the Book of Mormon—similarities that, for obvious reasons, I left unnoted in that first draft in Egypt.

It is said that on his deathbed h e bestowed his khirqa t o Ahmad-i Jam Zandapil , who was just abou t to be born. Ahmad-i Jam was a Persian saint who was the opposite of Ab u Sa cld i n almos t ever y respect: stern , prou d o f his mystical power, drawing people to repentance, not t o love, and ofte n usin g his spiritual strengt h for revenge and punishment.

The Seljuks of Anatolia: An Epigraphic Study Abstract This is a study of the monumental epigraphy of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, also known as the Sultanate of Rum, which emerged in Anatolia following the Great Seljuk victory in Manzikert against the Byzantine Empire in the year 1071.It was heavily weakened in the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 against the Mongols but lasted until the end of the thirteenth century. The history of this sultanate which survived many wars, the Crusades and the Mongol invasion is analyzed through their epigraphy with regard to the influence of political and cultural shifts. The identity of the sultanate and its sultans is examined with the use of their titles in their monumental inscriptions with an emphasis on the use of the language and vocabulary, and with the purpose of assessing their strength during different periods of their realm.

    REBUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF IRAQ: COMPARISONS TO THE REVIVAL OF DEMOCRACY IN CENTRAL EUROPE Christopher S. Crago∗ I. INTRODUCTION The daunting task before the United States and the United Nations is the reformation of a country and the creation of a working democracy in Iraq. An Iraqi democracy must reflect the image of its ethnically diverse population and stand as a clear vision and represent the strong foundations required for the establishment of a unifying constitution. An Iraqi democracy must For a society to begin the journey towards a developed democracy, “there is a need first to have a constitution, to have a government, to re-establish Iraq as the Iraqi people would like to have it.”1 The constitution must be supported by a legitimate representative government with enforceability power, or, like the constitutions of so many nations, it will be worth nothing more than the paper it is printed upon. The challenge is to form a government for the people of Iraq that will restore faith in the political process and unify a nation currently in flux with competing minorities. Such a task is complicated but imperative to return stability to the Middle East. The movement towards freedom and democracy is already progressing as the United States presses for the eventual creation of a three-hundred member National Assembly in Iraq.2 The assembly should be endowed with the power to draft a new constitution, re-invigorate a beleaguered judiciary, and empower a free market of trade.3 While the United States delayed the institution of actual policies and procedures for creating an Iraqi National Assembly, the Coalition Provisional Authority, prior to national elections, formed a temporary governing ∗ Christopher S.

Destaca-se que muito provavelmente, os geógrafos do Islã medieval, em suas vertentes sistemática e corográfica, foram uma espécie de “ponte” que faltava na evolução do pensamento geográfico entre os gregos da Antiguidade e os precursores das grandes escolas clássicas europeias nos séculos XIX e XX. Assim sendo, o artigo apresenta uma abordagem alternativa da obra de Ibn-Battuta não só para o estudo da literatura de viagens, mas também, para a Carstologia. Abstract This study is intended to address, under a new approach, the contributions of Ibn-Battuta to the development of certain areas of geography, especially the anthropogenic use of karst as well as the cultural use of caves. Noteworthy to mention is that, most likely, the geographers from medieval Islam were a kind of missing “bridge” in the evolution of geographical thought among the ancient Greeks and the precursors of the great European classical schools in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Thus, this article presents an alternative approach to the work of Ibn-Battuta not only for the study of travel literature but also to the study of karstology.
