ABSTRACT: Pterospermum reticulatum Wight and Arn is a vulnerable according to IUCN red list category (1998). In the present study observations were made on floral ecology and reproductive biology of Pterospermum reticulatum at Pilikula reserve forest, Mangalore, Karnataka during 2012-2013. The peak flowering was observed during February to April and anthesis occurred in the evening between 18:30 -22:30hrs. Inflorescences in terminal or axillary fascicles, Flowers are white colour and 5 petals and 5 linear sepals. Stamens are 15, in group of five. Fruits are capsule, brown, 5-angled and 5-valved, development of fruit to dehiscence was observed. Pollen production per flower was counted 3, 93499.9 and pollen ovule ratio was 1:393500. Floral biology including the stigma receptivity, pollen viability, pollen germination and pollen tube growth were recorded during the flowering period. Macro and Micro nutrients of the soil collected from the rhizosphere were analyzed. The factors responsible for declining of the population of Pterospermum reticulatum are discussed. Flowering Plants of Sikkim- an Analysis
FLOWERING PLANTS OF SIKKIM- AN ANALYSIS Paramjit Singh and M. Sanjappa ABSTRACT ikkim is one of the biodiversity rich states of our country. The present paper analyses the flowering plant diversity of the state with some indicative figures of dominant genera like Bulbophyllum, Calanthe, Coelogyne, SCymbidium, Dendrobium, Gentiana, Juncus, Pedicularis, Primula, Rhododendron and Swertia recorded from the region. Nearly 165 species have been named after the state, as they were first collected from the state or plants were known to occur in Sikkim. Some of the representative endemic species of the state have also been listed. One hundred ninety seven families, 1371 genera have been appended with indicative number of species of each genus known to occur in Sikkim. In all more than 4450 species of flowering plants recorded so far. It is a thumb shaped hilly region with Nepal in the west, Bhutan in the east and Tibet in the north and Snorth-east. In the south it is bordered by Darjeeling district of West Bengal. The mountain chains which run southward from the main Himalayan ranges form the natural border of Sikkim; the Chola Range dividing it from Tibet in the north east and Bhutan in the south-east; the Singalila range likewise separating it from Nepal in the west. Mountain passes along these ranges over the years have sustained a two way traffic of traders, pilgrims, and adventurers from Tibet and Central Asia. -

Numerous field surveys and examination of museum specimens recorded twenty species of Grasshoppers on the archipelago. Five of them are new records, including a new species: Odontomelus ancestrus n. sp. restricted to Round Island, a 2 km² islet North to Mauritius. Despite intensive searching, five of the non endemic species once recorded on the archipelago have not been recorded again and might correspond to temporary settlements/introductions. A key to Mas- carene grasshoppers is given. Key words: Orthoptera, endemism, island, extinction, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Réunion Introduction Whereas Ensifera, particularly Grylloidea, can display an impressive diversity on remote tropical oceanic islands (Matyot 1998; Otte 1994; Otte and Cowper 2007), Caelifera are usually less represented, but they display a similarly high rate of endemism (e.g. Peck 1996; Zimmerman 1948; Matyot 1998; Hebard 1933; Evenhuis 2007). The Mascarene Archipelago is a group of islands in the South Western Indian Ocean, consisting of Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues (Fig. 1). When the grasshopper fauna of Mascarene Islands was last examined, only eight species were recorded, two of them being considered endemic to one of the island (Vinson 1968).
