    1912.] Almmmcs of Massachusetts. 15 NOTES ON THE ALMANACS OF MASSACHUSETTS. BY CHARLES L. NICHOLS The origin of the almanac is wrapped in as much obscurity as that of the science of astronomy upon which its usefulness depends. It is possible, however, to trace some of the steps of its evolution and to note the uses to which it has been applied as that evolution has taken place. « When Fabius, the secretary of Appius Claudius, stole the fasti-sacri or Kalendares of the Roman priest- hood three hundred years before Christ, and exhibited the white tablets on the walls of the Forum, he not only struck a blow for reUgious freedom, but also gave to the people a long coveted source of information. Until that period no fast or holy-day had been pro- claimed except by the decision of the priests, since by their secret methods were made the calculations for those days. From that time the calendar of days has belonged to the people themselves, and has held an important position in the almanac of all nations. When Ptolemy in 150, A. D., prepared his catalogue of stars, and laid the foundation for more exact and con- tinuous records of their movements, the development of the Ephemeris, or daily note-book of the planets' places in our almanacs was assured. The meaning of the "man of signs," which is still so commonly seen, was minutely described by Manil- ius in his Astronomicon, written in the reign of the Emperor Tiberius. Origen and Jamblicus state that the principle underlying this belonged to a much earlier 16 American Aritiquarian Society.

    Memoranda and Documents “DON’T SPEAK TO ME, BUT WRITE ON THIS”: THE CHILDHOOD ALMANACS OF MARY AND KATHERINE BYLES michael j. eamon “ EAR Katy, Don’t speak to me, but write on this.” Thus, on a D blank page in her almanac, did ten-year-old Mary Byles (1750– 1832) scribble a note to her seven-year-old sister, Katherine (1753– 1837).1 “Do go in mothers Room and Look for my Book . there’s a good girl.”2 During a period of at least seven years in the mid– eighteenth century, when a new edition of Nathaniel Ames’s annual An Astronomical DIARY: or an ALMANACK, for the Year of our Lord Christ appeared, the Reverend Doctor Mather Byles (1707–88) of Boston handed down his superseded almanac to his daughters.3 In the margins and empty pages, between the monthly astrological and meteorological accounts, the girls wrote down books they had read, places they had visited, and gifts they had received; they also practiced their handwriting by meticulously copying the uniform, yet slightly askew, typeset print. All the Worthingtoiis in America are believed to have descended from Nicholas, who came to New England in 1649, and from Capt. lohn, who is first known of in Maryland in 1675, and who died April 9, 1701, leaving several sons. Both, pi-obabh', descended from the Worthingtons of Lancashire, and such is the tradition of both families. In this genealogy will be found only those who are descended from Nicholas, and, as it is most probable that he belonged to the Shevington branch of the family of Worthington, of Worthing- " ton. County Lancashire, England, I have given the Herald's Visitations" of that branch down to 1650, at which time Nicholas was in New England. The origin of our name as given in the " Heraldic Journal, 1868," is Wearth-in-ton, from three Saxon words, meaning Farm-in-town. The old Hall at Worthington, where the family resided for seven hundred years, was recently pulled down. The Coat of Arms here given are those of the Worthingtons of Lancashire and Cheshire. While I have been exceedingly anxioiis to secure accuracy and completeness, many errors and omissions must necessarily occtir in a work of this kind.     D'BD BAM. 4IJ5 four years. The Rev. Jacob Flint, ~he next minister, was settled here in 1798. A Trinitarian church was built here in 1826, and Rev. Aaron Picket was installed the first pastor. This town is noted for. its rocky coasts, and for the numerous shipwrecks which have taken place on its borders. Cohasset r~ck, which consists of several small islands and sunken rocks, lies about three miles north-east of the harbor j they have proved fatal to many vessels. This town has become quite a place of resort for citizens and strangers, in summer months, to enjoy the marine scenery and sea air. In 1837, there were 36 vessels em­ ployed in the cod and mackerel fishery, the tonnage of which was 2,284 i codfish caught, 750 quintals, valued' at $2,250; mackerel caught, 11,700 barrels, value, $73,286 i hands employed, 324. In five years preceding 1837, there were 17 vessels built, the ton­ nage of which was 2,765, valued at $110,600. Population, 1,331. Distance,6 miles from Hingham, and about 16 miles to Boston by water. DEDHAM. THE settlement of this town was commenced in 1635. In that year, the general court, then sitting at Newtown, (now Cambridge,) granted a tract of land south of Charles river to 12 men. The next year 19 persons,including the first 12, petitioned the general court for an additional grant, lying on both sides of Charles river, which was made, agreeably to this petition. The last-mentioned grant included the territory of the present town of Dedham, and of a number of other towns in the vicinity.

DENKER, author of this analysis of the cultural 'patterns and ideas to be found in the Library's extensive collection of eighteenth century A men- can almanacsy received his Doctor's degree in American Civilization at Yale and for the fast three years has been director of Yale's special summer course in American Studies for Foreign Students. Since September, içS2> he has been Assistant Professor in American Studies at Rutgers. With the aid of a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship he has been making a study of the his- torical foundations of the United States. His research will be embodied in a book to be called The Role of America in World History. WANT TO STATE frankly that this estimate of American almanacs is fragmentary. The reason for publication is the hope I of influencing scholars to turn their attention to materials that do not come readily to mind as an historical source. Though the Rutgers collection is by no means complete it may serve to turn our attention from barren areas of research to a type of publication that recorded contemporary history and reflected popular sentiment. With this purpose most readers will sympathize. For most of the period I have relied largely on the collection in the library of Rutgers University, one which rivals the best in size, value and importance. Not so strong perhaps in the seventeenth cen- tury issues, the library possesses a fine collection of almanacs prior to and after the Revolution. As a result I have examined a total of 3,902 almanacs, comprising 302 issues before 1800, 1,350 issues between 1800 and 1850 and 2,250 between 1850 and 1949.

Stephens, Director of the Willard House and Clock Museum, will be discussing Willard Clocks at the Dedham Historical Society Museum on Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 PM. Of special interest will be a discussion on the Society‘s extremely rare Simon Willard Astronomical Shelf Timekeeper, with face by Paul Revere, and the First Church, Unitarian‘s Simon Willard Steeple Clock. Stephens is a Texas native and a graduate of Austin College in Sherman, Texas, South Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas, and of the Preservation Studies Program at Boston University. He was named Director of Willard House and Clock Museum in Grafton, Massachusetts in 2001 after serving as Curator from 1993 to 2001. He serves as the chairman of the Grafton Historical Commission, treasurer of the Grafton Historical Society, and is a member of the Grafton Historic District Commission and the Community Preservation Committee. The Willard family made their first clocks in central Massachusetts before the end of the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Willard began making clocks in his small Grafton workshop in 1766. Within a few short years, his three younger brothers—Simon, Ephraim and Aaron—would follow in his footsteps and become America‘s premiere 18th century clockmakers. In 1802, Simon Willard obtained a patent for his Improved Timepiece, or ―banjo‖ clock; today it is considered to be one of the most significant styles of American timepieces. Founded in 1971, the Willard House and Clock museum‘s collection includes over 80 Willard clocks and is the largest of its kind in the world.
