NICHOLS The origin of the almanac is wrapped in as much obscurity as that of the science of astronomy upon which its usefulness depends. It is possible, however, to trace some of the steps of its evolution and to note the uses to which it has been applied as that evolution has taken place. « When Fabius, the secretary of Appius Claudius, stole the fasti-sacri or Kalendares of the Roman priest- hood three hundred years before Christ, and exhibited the white tablets on the walls of the Forum, he not only struck a blow for reUgious freedom, but also gave to the people a long coveted source of information. Until that period no fast or holy-day had been pro- claimed except by the decision of the priests, since by their secret methods were made the calculations for those days. From that time the calendar of days has belonged to the people themselves, and has held an important position in the almanac of all nations. When Ptolemy in 150, A. D., prepared his catalogue of stars, and laid the foundation for more exact and con- tinuous records of their movements, the development of the Ephemeris, or daily note-book of the planets' places in our almanacs was assured. The meaning of the "man of signs," which is still so commonly seen, was minutely described by Manil- ius in his Astronomicon, written in the reign of the Emperor Tiberius. Origen and Jamblicus state that the principle underlying this belonged to a much earlier 16 American Aritiquarian Society. -

Memoranda and Documents “DON’T SPEAK TO ME, BUT WRITE ON THIS”: THE CHILDHOOD ALMANACS OF MARY AND KATHERINE BYLES michael j. eamon “ EAR Katy, Don’t speak to me, but write on this.” Thus, on a D blank page in her almanac, did ten-year-old Mary Byles (1750– 1832) scribble a note to her seven-year-old sister, Katherine (1753– 1837).1 “Do go in mothers Room and Look for my Book . there’s a good girl.”2 During a period of at least seven years in the mid– eighteenth century, when a new edition of Nathaniel Ames’s annual An Astronomical DIARY: or an ALMANACK, for the Year of our Lord Christ appeared, the Reverend Doctor Mather Byles (1707–88) of Boston handed down his superseded almanac to his daughters.3 In the margins and empty pages, between the monthly astrological and meteorological accounts, the girls wrote down books they had read, places they had visited, and gifts they had received; they also practiced their handwriting by meticulously copying the uniform, yet slightly askew, typeset print. Author: Gaard, Greta Title: Strategies for a Cross-Cultural Ecofeminist Literary Criticism Strategies for a Cross-Cultural Ecofeminist Literary Criticism Greta Gaard University of Wisconsin-River Falls Interdisciplinarity, multiculturalism, internationalism—according to Cheryll Glotfelty, these are crucial areas for ecocriticism’s continued development. Drawing on fifty years of interdisciplinary work in Women’s Studies, ecofeminist literary critics with a history of work in multiculturalism would seem well poised to offer bridging strategies toward an international ecocriticism. Are there insights we can draw from the analyses of multicultural feminisms within the United States to guide the development of ecofeminist literary criticisms cross-culturally? What features of this ecocriticism will need to change? For if both feminism and ecocriticism are grounded in specific material, cultural, and economic relations to place and history, then ecofeminist literary criticism cannot be expected to remain the same from one set of eco-social relations to the next. Like much of ecocriticism, ecofeminist literary criticism is grounded in activism, and committed to using literary criticism as a strategy for ecodefense. In the west, ecofeminism is an environmental theory and practice that developed in the 1980s through antinuclear peace protests at Greenham Common in England, as well as at Seneca Falls and at the Vol. 1 Vol. Women’s Pentagon Actions; it has roots in feminist vegetarianism through Feminists for Animal Rights, antiracist feminism through the Woman Earth Feminist Peace Institute, No. 1 feminist earth-based spiritualities and feminist political engagements as well as through the international Green movement. After nearly two decades of activist and theorized engagements, ecofeminist literary criticism took root in U.S., Australian, and European ecocriticism, reaching ecocritics in Japan, China, and Taiwan in the past decade. -

Martin Colorado State University Tracy Kitchel University of Missouri The traditions of the National FFA Organization (FFA) are grounded in agrarianism. This ideology fo- cuses on the ability of farming and nature to develop citizens and integrity within people. Agrarianism has been an important thread of American rhetoric since the founding of country. The ideology has mor- phed over the last two centuries as the country developed from a nation of farmers to an industrial world power. The agrarian ideology that resonated in rural America during the formation of the FFA was southern agrarianism. Southern agrarian ideology argued for self-reliance and adherence to past tradi- tions. These concepts appear in the FFA traditions of the creed, opening ceremony, motto, and awards. The historical growth and success of the FFA within rural communities demonstrates the ability of the southern agrarian ideology to connect with contemporary rural values. However, the southern agrarian ideology may not connect with the culture of diverse, urban, or suburban students. Advisers of diverse, urban, or suburban FFA chapters may need to reconceptualize the FFA traditions to accommodate their students. GRETA GAARD Drawing on a range of queer and ecological theories rather a single ortho- dox perspective, the thirteen essays in Queer Ecologies develop a strong argument for queering environmentalisms and greening queer theory, in three steps: challenging the heteronormativity of investigations into the ‘sexuality’ of nature, exploring the intersections between queer and ecological inflections of bio/politics (including spatial politics), and ulti- mately queering environmental affect, ethics, and desire. Clearly, notions of sexuality have shaped social constructions of nature, as seen in the familiar concepts and creation of wilderness, national and urban parks, and car camping. As the first book-length volume to establish the inter- sections of queer theory and environmentalisms at such depth, Queer Ecologies covers a broad range of topics—gay cruising in the parks, les- bian rural retreats, transgressive sexual behaviors among diverse species, literary and cultural narratives of queer/nature. It also establishes topics for future development, i.e., exploring the intersection of speciesism and heterosexism in queer ecologies, and developing a focus on the constitu- tion of the non-white queer subject. -
