4818 19 Looking to the Future

I thought Easter was early last year – and it’s even earlier this year – 27th March. This means that the season of Lent, which is the six weeks leading up to Easter – which is traditionally a time of reflection and abstinence in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection - begins very soon on Ash Wednesday, 10th. February.

It is also a time for study and learning in the Church, and this year, we will again have a series of Lent Study Groups open to all, focussing our thoughts on the Ten Commandments. (Please find details of the course and groups in our churches).

Jesus' summary of the Ten Commandments, was that we should First love God with all our being, and secondly, love our neighbours as ourselves. We will have a chance to explore more about what this means in our groups.

SERVICES IN THE UPPER CULM VALLEY MISSION COMMUNITY But this summary of Jesus is a sound basis for our Christian PARISH PUMP – No. 268 August – September 2018 August & September 2018 living, and representatives from all our parishes have used this Upper Culm Valley Mission Community as the basis of our Mission Action Plan which will be presented We are a group of four Anglican Churches to our churches at the end of January. in the Upper Culm Valley: ‘To love God and to love our neighbour’ Culmstock, Hemyock, Culm Davy Chapel and Clayhidon.

The service of Morning Prayer at Hemyock took place at the Church At the Sea Sunday service in July we recalled that there were 1.5 Room as Café Church. You might also like to know that on a run from say China to the USA you might not see land for up to two weeks, and it is not uncommon Saturday 4th Saturday 4th for sailors to be on their boats for 8, 9 even 14months without getting off the vessels. Such is the demand placed on the crews Tuesday14th Tuesday14th and dock staff for ships to be tied up in port for as short a time as possible. Consequently the major problems today for seafarers are those around mental health. Bigger ships with smaller crews mean Tuesday 28th Tuesday 28th less time “off duty”, fewer people to share problems with, feelings of isolation from families (not all ships have internet connections) All at 10am – 12 noon All at 10am – 12 noon and increased work related stress.
