Club, Community and Coal: A Case Study of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club in the 1980s James Canavan MA Sports History and Culture De Montfort University August, 2015 Acknowledgements Over the past year I have been overwhelmed by the support and guidance by many people associated with Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. From an initial, exploratory post on fans’ forum dafc.net in late July, 2014, I was immediately contacted by Donald Adamson and Jason Barber, who offered to help. Through Jason I was able to interview Jim Leishman and Ian Westwater, and Donald provided me with a high level of information about the club, in addition to the links with coal mining. I cannot thank Donald and Jason enough for their assistance. The following people have also provided help and information along the way: Gordon Baird, Alan Bairner, Kenny Cowan, Joe Graham, Jim Leishman, Duncan Simpson, John Simpson, and Ian Westwater. Every single person is a credit to themselves and to Dunfermline Athletic Football Club for giving up their free time to help me with this dissertation. I would also like to apologise to the staff at the temporary library at St Margaret’s House for my inability to work the microfiche readers, and to thank them for their help. At DMU, Matt Taylor has been very helpful in terms of the structure of the dissertation, and Neil Carter provided initial guidance. Lastly, I would like to thank my Father, Frank Canavan, for being a constant inspiration to complete this project. Since his death in 2009, I have visited Dunfermline every year, taking in a Pars match as a personal tribute.

  • Celtic FC V Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT Celtic Park, Glasgow Tuesday, 21 November 2006 - 20:45CET Group F - Matchday 5
Celtic FC v Manchester United FC MATCH PRESS KIT Celtic Park, Glasgow Tuesday, 21 November 2006 - 20:45CET Group F - Matchday 5 Motivation will definitely not be a problem when Celtic FC lock horns with Manchester United FC in Glasgow. Defeat for both teams on Matchday 4 has raised the stakes even higher in a contest in which a point for United will guarantee their progression to the knockout rounds. A win or draw will be enough for United, with maximum points securing them top spot. Celtic, meanwhile, can qualify if they win and the other Group F fixture between SL Benfica and FC København ends all-square. A 1-0 or 2-1 win, or any victory by a two-goal margin, would also be enough provided København do not win. Add the traditional spice of any Anglo-Scottish encounter and a gripping evening beckons. • Celtic's hopes of advancing from the group stage for the first time were dented by a 3-0 loss at Benfica on 1 November. There was no way back after going two down early on through a tenth-minute Gary Caldwell own goal and Nuno Gomes effort (22). Andrei Karyaka added a third goal 14 minutes from time. • That defeat maintained Celtic's miserable away record in the UEFA Champions League, where over four campaigns they have still not managed a win or clean sheet on their travels. Home comforts • At home the Scottish champions are a different proposition, with eight victories in eleven games. These statistics suggest Celtic must get the right result against United if they are to avoid falling at this hurdle again.

Full Time 246 Chapter 1 Wembley 1967 S dream starts to new jobs go, even Carlsberg would have struggled to improve on Bobby Brown’s. Appointed A Scotland team manager only two months earlier, on 11 April 1967 he oversaw his team beating England, then reigning world champions, at Wembley, English football’s impressive and emblematic stadium. It was his first full international in charge and England’s first loss in 20 games. To defeat the world champions, Scotland’s most intense and enduring rivals, in these circumstances was an outstanding achievement, like winning the Grand National on your debut ride or running a four-minute mile in your first race. The date is enshrined in Scottish football history as one of its most memorable days. In fans’ folklore, it was the day when Scotland became ‘unofficial world champions’ by knocking England off their throne – and what could be sweeter for a Scottish fan? As Brown said, in his understated way at the time, ‘It was a fairly daunting task for your first game in charge.
