Club, Community and Coal: A Case Study of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club in the 1980s James Canavan MA Sports History and Culture De Montfort University August, 2015 Acknowledgements Over the past year I have been overwhelmed by the support and guidance by many people associated with Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. From an initial, exploratory post on fans’ forum dafc.net in late July, 2014, I was immediately contacted by Donald Adamson and Jason Barber, who offered to help. Through Jason I was able to interview Jim Leishman and Ian Westwater, and Donald provided me with a high level of information about the club, in addition to the links with coal mining. I cannot thank Donald and Jason enough for their assistance. The following people have also provided help and information along the way: Gordon Baird, Alan Bairner, Kenny Cowan, Joe Graham, Jim Leishman, Duncan Simpson, John Simpson, and Ian Westwater. Every single person is a credit to themselves and to Dunfermline Athletic Football Club for giving up their free time to help me with this dissertation. I would also like to apologise to the staff at the temporary library at St Margaret’s House for my inability to work the microfiche readers, and to thank them for their help. At DMU, Matt Taylor has been very helpful in terms of the structure of the dissertation, and Neil Carter provided initial guidance. Lastly, I would like to thank my Father, Frank Canavan, for being a constant inspiration to complete this project. Since his death in 2009, I have visited Dunfermline every year, taking in a Pars match as a personal tribute. -

Running Head: SPORTS COVERAGE on BBC ALBA 1 Sports Coverage
Running head: SPORTS COVERAGE ON BBC ALBA 1 Sports Coverage on BBC ALBA: Content, Value and Position in the Scottish Broadcasting Landscape Xavier Ramon Vegas and Richard Haynes Published Online First: Communication and Sport 29 January 2018 Abstract Through a mixed-method approach, we examine the sports programming offered by BBC ALBA between 2008 and 2016 and identify the value that the channel creates in Scotland through its diverse sports portfolio. In an increasingly cluttered and complex scenario where pay TV giants Sky and BT hold a plethora of top-tier rights and BBC Scotland and STV cannot fit more sport into their schedules, BBC ALBA serves Gaelic-speaking and national audiences with a regular diet of quality sports programming. Beyond being instrumental to filling schedules, sports content has been a gateway for Gaelic, a key driver of BBC ALBA’s investment in the creative sector and a contributor to the development of grassroots sport in Scotland. However, the financial situation under which the channel operates makes it very difficult to sustain and improve its current position. This case study demonstrates that sport broadcasting offers genuine opportunities to maintain linguistic and cultural diversity in small nations, even in a context characterized by escalating competition, dwindling resources and the proliferation of multiple viewing portals. Victory a must tonight Our European visitors tonight, Legia Warsaw, were very much an unknown quantity when the second round draw of the Cup-Winners' Cup was made. So, over the past few days, we have all been doing our homework on our Polish guests. Jocky Scott didn't have much luck when he first tried to visit Poland to have a look at them, because their Embassy in London couldn't get a necessary visa through quickly enough for us. Then games were postponed to allow the Poles to prepare for last week's international against England at Wembley. Jocky did, however, manage to assess Warsaw on Sunday when he took in their game agaist Lodz, so we now know all about their current form. In fact, it was a hectic spell for Jocky, as he was also in Bucharest last Wednesday taking in Romania's game against Bulgaria for Andy Roxburgh. Right now, though, it's Warsaw who concern us. To get a general feel of the Alex Smith Polish style we also had Drew Jarvie in London lastweek. Drew was at White Hart Lane on Tuesday for the under Switzerland. I know he will be able to come straight in 21 clash and the following night he was among the and handle this situation. Wembley crowd for the senior international. Legia Beating Hearts by 3-0 on Saturday was a lovely boost for Warsaw had one player, Kosecki, in the line up which lost us. The performance came at exactly the right time. Not to England. And they also had another two on the bench. -
