Opera Singers By QUSTAV KOBBB A beautiful collection of photographs with biographical sketches of all the grand opera stars, including the newer artists. Such favorites as Sembrich, Nordica, Ternina, Melba, Eames, Calve, Plancon, and Caruso are represented in a variety of roles. One hundred and twenty-seven illustrations in all are given, twenty -nine of which are full-page portraits, forming the most interesting and complete collection of its kind ever published. The biographies are absolutely authentic, the facts being taken down from the lips of the singers themselves. The latter part of the volume, entitled " Opera Singers off Duty," shows the lighter pastimes indulged in when not occupied with the arduous duty of public performance. The book is printed on finely finished, heavy paper from large, clear type, is substantially bound in strong board covers, and bears a lifelike picture of Nordica as Brunnhilde on its title cover. Carl Goldmark (Born at Keszthely, Hungary, May 18, 1830; now living in Vienna.) Goldmark's overture, "In Italien," was produced at a Philharmonic Concert, led by Ernst Schuch, in Vienna on January 24, 1904. The first performance in America was by the Chicago Orchestra, Theodore Thomas conductor, at Chicago, December 3, 1904. The overture is scored for two flutes (one interchangeable with piccolo), two oboes, one English horn, two clarinets, one bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, one bass tuba, kettledrums, tambourine, snare-drum, cymbals, triangle, harp, strings. It is in the form of the old Italian overture. It begins with an al- legro section, which is followed by a slow movement, after which the lively section is repeated. Allegro con fuoco, C major, 4-4 (12-8). There is no introduction, but after a measure of bassoons, kettledrums, and basses the chief theme, of a gay character, is announced by violins and wind instru- ments. This is developed by full orchestra. The second theme, of a gentler nature, is sung (Ruhig, A-flat) by solo oboe, accompanied by bassoons, horns, harp, triangle, and tambourine, and there is a counter- melody in 'cellos and double-basses. This theme is developed, and the chief, theme is developed with it, something after the manner of the stretto in a fugue, until the slow section is reached. Langsam (Andante), 4-4. An expressive theme is sung by the oboes, accompanied by harp and muted strings. The second part of this section recalls in its mood the "Sankuntala" overture, and the divided strings and the harp, with the use of horns and wood-wind, give the coloring dear to Goldmark. Concerto No. 5, E-flat, for Pianoforte and Orchestra, Op. 73. Ludwig van Beethoven (Born at Bonn, December 16 (?), 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827.). Beethoven wrote this concerto in 1809 at Vienna. The town was occupied by the French from May 12 to October 14. Other works of the year were the String Quartet in E-flat, Op. 74, the Sonata in E- flat, Op. Sia, Sonata, F-sharp major, Op. 78, a march for a military band, some pianoforte pieces, and songs. And it was in 1809 that Joseph Haydn died. The autograph bears this inscription: "Klavier Konzert 1809 von LvBthvn." The concerto was published in February, 181 1, and the title read as follows: "Grand concerto pour le Pianoforte avec accom- pagnement de l'orchestre compose et dedie a Son Altesse Imperiale Roudolphe Archi-Duc d'Autriche, etc., par L v. The pianist was Friedrich Schneider.* The Allgemeine Musik Zeitung described the concerto as "without doubt one of the most original, imaginative, effective, but most difficult of all existing concertos." Schneider, it seems, played "with soul" as well as force, and the orchestra accompanied remark- ably, for "it respected and admired composer, composition and pianist." The first performance with which Beethoven was concerned was at Vienna on February 12, 1812, when Karl Czerny (1 791-1857) was the pianist. The occasion was a singular sort of entertainment. Theodor Korner, who had then been a looker-on in Vienna only for a short time, wrote home on February 15: " Wednesday there took place for the benefit of the Charitable Society of Noble Ladies| a concert and a representation of three pictures after Raphael, Poussin, and Troyes, as Goethe describes them in his 'Elective Affinities.' A new concerto by Beethoven for the pianoforte did not succeed." Castelli's "Thalia" gave as the reason of this failure the unwillingness of Beethoven, "full of proud self-confidence," to write for the crowd. "He can be under- stood and appreciated only by the connoisseurs, and one cannot reckon on their being in a majority at such an affair." Thayer moralizes on *Johann Christian Friedrich Schneider, organist, pianist, composer, teacher (1786-1853). He was busy as organist, pianist, and conductor at Leipsic from 1807 to 1821, when he settled at Dessau, where he died. fThe title of this society was " Gesellschaft adelicher Frauen zur Beforderung des Guten und Niit/.lichen."     P THE GLORIOUS, TRAGIC CAREER OF ERNST MIELCK by Kimmo Korhonen In late spring 1899 the composer Ernst Mielck was struck with a serious bout of tuberculosis of the jugular gland. He underwent an operation, but the doctors did not give him much hope of recovery. By July of that year Mielck’s condition showed signs of improvement, and in the middle of August he moved to the shores of Lago di Maggiore in Locarno, Switzerland, where he was to spend the following winter. Yet in spite of the encouraging prognosis, his condition took a turn for the worse: the illness spread to his lungs and Mielck died on 22 October. He was buried in Locarno two days later – on what would have been his 22nd birthday. Mielck’s sudden death marked the premature end of a career that promised great things. He had come to prominence only a few years earlier, first as a pianist, then as a composer. In his few years of creativity he composed a body of works that, though small, nonetheless demonstrated his extraordinary talent. His output includes the first fully fledged Finnish symphony (1897), composed two years before the First Symphony of Jean Sibelius. Contemporary musical circles even viewed him as a significant challenger to Sibelius. Mielck’s career reached its zenith in December 1898, when he became the first Finnish composer to hold a concert of his own works with the Berlin Philharmonic. In spite of this success, Mielck has remained something of an outsider in the history of Finnish music. At a time when young Finnish composers were increasingly turning their attentions to national themes and a post-Wagnerian musical language, Mielck took inspiration from central-European Romanticism and the traditional compositional forms of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms.
