School lunch portions shrink to help fight obesity

Alex Trujillo Staff Reporter

The First Lady, Michelle Obama, decided to create and promote a program that could potentially take a massive step in the right direction for controlling the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States. The "Let’s Move Program" has the First Lady, celebrities, large corporations, health care providers, and most importantly, schools all supporting the cause. Childhood obesity has increased 15% since the 1960s. So, what has occurred in the Westminster High School cafe as a result of this program? Students are asking, "Why are we paying the same price for lunch, when it’s a smaller portion of food?" To answer that question, Jim D. Rowan, the Director of Culinary Services, was interviewed. His role in his position includes oversight of all food-related activities in Adams County School District 50 including federal and state compliance, purchases, menus, and managing personnel for all 17 schools. Rowan said, "Students pay $2.30 at the high school level which is behind the recommended pricing from the USDA and CDE who request that we should be charging $2.90 for all lunches." He continued, "Students are actually paying less for the same, it may not be all bread and meat, but we have expanded the amounts of fruits and vegetables that are now avail- a b l e .” How does this help promote eating healthy when the kids go home? Believe it or not, Michelle Obama has teamed up with Walmart, and if you notice, the prices have been lowered for fruits and vegetables, while sugary snacks cost more. Her proposition is to promote kids to eat healthy when they are at home, and one way to do it is to start with the schools.
