THE ONGOING CONCEPT Like their moniker, The Ongoing Concept refuses to cement themselves to any one thing. Dawson Scholz (guitarist/vocalist) says of the band “some bands may say we play heavy music and that’s supposed to be guitar, bass and drums. I look around our music space and see a trombone, a piano, a harmonica and I think, I wonder what we could do with that?” Hailing from Idaho, the band is literally a band of brothers (and one childhood friend) made up of Dawson, Kyle Scholz (vocals/keyboard), Parker Scholz (drums) and TJ Nichols (bass). The band arrived on the national radar via their 2013 debut album Saloon on Solid State Records (Underoath, Fit For A King). The album simultaneously produced plenty of praise and plenty of puzzled head- scratching alike. The songs combined the technical dexterity of bands like The Chariot with strong elements of punk melodicism and utilized unexpected instruments and styles throughout. As highly critical online outlet Metal Sucks summed up “The dusty mine-town barroom conceit isn’t fleeting or kitschy either – ragtime piano, seedy banjo plucking and barbershop crooning have all been smoothly integrated without ever feeling forced or secondary to the screamo.” While recording their newly released sophomore platter, Handmade the band brought the term “DIY” to a whole new level. This included recording the album entirely in their house, making their own videos and album artwork and even going as far as to build their own instruments. COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

"We never planned to be a band. We were friends first and we just love being together," says lead singer Christian Zucconi. "Grouplove grew organically from that love." Their debut album, with the tongue-in-cheek title Never Trust a Happy Song, is quickly spreading the love, too. Their sweet and savory mix of jangly, upbeat melodies, Zucconi's anguished howl and keyboardist Hannah Hooper's coquettish backup vocals have been making the rounds in indie rock circles and on the charts. Joyful, noisy single Colours peaked at No. 12 on USA TODAY's alternative chart. Another track, Tongue Tied, lassoed the new iPod Touch commercial, which ran during the Grammy nominations concert and has continued since Thanksgiving. Add Grouplove's lock as the opening band for Young the Giant's tour in March and April, and it's no wonder they're so lovey-dovey. Happy accidents: Zucconi wasn't always this upbeat. "Before Grouplove, I was in other bands, but the timing never seemed right," he says. "I'd wake up every day depressed, I spent so many years miserable doing music. Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options. NOVEMBER 2019 PUMPEHUSET Det gotiske metalcore-band Motionless In White kommer til Pumpehuset. Selvom hjembyen Scranton, Pennsylvania er mest kendt for at være en meget stille og rolig by, så er der intet tamt over gotiske metalcore-band Motionless In White. Bandet blander rå vrede, som vi kender den fra metalcore, med den dramatiske atmosfære, som vi kender fra goth-metal og industrial. Deres mørke og følsomme lyd lander et sted mellem Type O Negative og Slayer. Motionless In White, der blev stiftet af en gruppe af venner i high school, brød ind på scenen i 2007 med udgivelsen af deres debut-EP ’The Whorror’. Selvom der har været en del udskiftning blandt bandmedlemmer, har bandet formået at udgive en solid række albums i den tid de har eksisteret. Efter udgivelsen af ’The Whorror og deres anden EP ’When Love Met Destruction’ udkom deres første fuldlængde album ’Creatures’ i 2010, efterfulgt af albummet ’Infamous’ i 2012. Bandet fik dog først deres reelle mainstream gennembrud i 2014 med udgivelsen af tredje album ’Reincarnate’, som debuterede på en 9. plads på Billboard Top 200.
