  • Comments on the Morphology of the Hillfort from Muncel
COMMENTS ON THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE HILLFORT FROM MUNCEL Eugen S. Teodor*, Aurora Peţan**, Alexandru Hegyi*** * Romanian National History Museum, Bucharest; [email protected] ** Research Center of Dacica Fundation, Alun; [email protected] *** West University of Timișoara, Timișoara; [email protected] Rezumat.

Br ătianu 2, Bucharest 030174, Romania, [email protected] , [email protected] Received: 29 July 2015 Abstract A set of colored glass tesserae ( yellow, blue turquoise and green turquoise) discovered at Isaccea and dated to the 11 th century AD was investigated using Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques to determine their chemical composition. Particular attention was paid to identify the glass chromophores and opacifiers. Based on the analytical results, several conclusions about the way these archaeological finds were manufactured, particularly on the raw materials and employed techniques were deduced. Key words : historical glass, glass tesserae, chemical composition, PIXE, PIGE, Isaccea 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ANCIENT GLASS ARTEFACTS The scientific study of archaeological glass artefacts can provide insights on how these utilitarian or decorative objects were produced. In particular, glass chemical composition can suggest which were the raw materials and manufacturing techniques. Based on hard science arguments, indications about the way the ancient societies functioned - access to resources and level of craftsmanship - can be obtained [1]. This paper focuses on five glass mosaic tesserae discovered in archaeological context at Isaccea and dated to the 11 th century AD. They have been the analyzed for their chemical composition using a combination of two non-destructive external IBA methods, namely Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission (PIGE).

  • Aux Débuts De L'archéologie Moderne Roumaine: Les Fouilles D'atmageaua
Aux débuts de l’archéologie moderne roumaine: les fouilles d’Atmageaua Tătărască∗ Radu-Alexandru DRAGOMAN** Abstract: This text is an analysis of the archive resulting from the 1929-1931, 1933 and 1935 archaeological research at Atmageaua Tătărască, southern Dobrudja (today Sokol, in Bulgaria). The excavations at Atmageaua Tătărască are relevant for the history of Romanian archeology because they correspond to the time of formation and institutionalization of a scientific approach considered to be “modern” and of a research philosophy that would dominate the archaeological practice ever since. The text seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the beginnings of the discipline and also advocates for the redefinition of the current archaeological practice. • The Evolution of Civil and Military Habitat in the Period Latène on the Territory of Romania
Iulian BOLDEA, Cornel Sigmirean (Editors), DEBATING GLOBALIZATION. Identity, Nation and Dialogue Section: History, Political Sciences, International Relations THE EVOLUTION OF CIVIL AND MILITARY HABITAT IN THE PERIOD LATÈNE ON THE TERRITORY OF ROMANIA Ioana Olaru PhD, “George Enescu” National University of Arts, Iaşi Abstract:In this paper, we will focus on the second period of the Iron Age, Latène (in fact, only its first two phases, the one of formation and spreading, after which the inhabitants of these territories will enter Antiquity, for Prehistory has ended), presented from the point of view of its settlements, and also of the civil and military constructions. The settlements and tenements of the entire Iron Age reflect the continuity of migrations, through limited, through the sedentarization and fortification of many of the settlements, which became true centres of unions of tribes. The urbanization process started in Hallstatt will continue in Latène, in the context of development of tribal aristocracy, as a result of unions of tribes that became more and more stable. Becoming bigger and bigger, the population needed bigger settlements, fortified, whose evolution will be monitored, from the davae of the Dacians from the forming period, to the quasi-urban settlements from the second period, the one of spreading during the period Latène, in the great fortresses built now (that will continue their development during the time of Burebista). The buildings become more and more complex, there are three types of described plans: rectangular, apse like, circular, and also the tower-tenements. Reviewed by Marius Turda (Oxford Brookes)Published on H-Romania (August, 2014) Commissioned by R. Chris Davis Do We Still Care about National History? This is a book that every historian in Romania dreams of writing: absorbing in its narrative and wide ranging in terms of its sources, yet perfectly integrated within Romanian national historiography. That it was Keith Hitchins who wrote the book is no surprise. No one, in Romania or abroad, is as respected an authority on Romanian topics as the professor of history at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Hitchins is possibly Romania’s greatest living historian. As for the book’s substance, Hitchins’s strategy is to expand Romania’s brief history as a modern state (established in 1859; it gained independence in 1878) into two millennia of history, and to project as widely geographically and diachronically as possible the generic term “Romanians.” The result is a book that satisfies both Western curiosity about Romania’s largely unknown history and the Romanian historiography’s own predilection for master narratives, such as the country’s uninterrupted historical continuity and political unity. The fact that Greater Romania was created in 1918 (and included Transylvania, Bukovina, and Bessarabia) following the First World War and the dissolution of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires only accentuates these themes within the book’s teleological interpretation of Romania’s history positioned between West and East.

BELDEAN M.C.TIMAR A. VARODI 2 V.OLARU Abstract: The paper refers to the conservation-restoration of an interesting and certainly less conventional artefact from the collections of Astra Museum. This was one of the objects restored by a team of 13 volunteers from the Faculty of Wood Engineering, of Transilvania University in Brasov, during the restoration camp 13 for Astra. The object was the cart from Brateiu, Sibiu County, a one horse drawn cart, dating from the end of XIXth century. The object with a complex construction including wood and metallic elements, though in a fairly good conservation state, needed interventions such as: cleaning, curative and preventive biological protection, consolidation of frail wood, restoration of metallic elements and minor completions and chromatic integration. The restored object was exhibited in Sibiu and Braşov. Key words: cultural heritage conservation, horse drawn cart, structure, wood, metal, finishing layer. 1.
