COURSE DESCRIPTION: Attendance at 8 flm screenings or related events within one semester from a Film Program approved list. (Grading: Pass/Fail)

COURSE OBJECTIVES: By course end, the well-disciplined student will be able to: • Appreciate motion pictures as an art form. • Compare and contrast motion picture traditions beyond mainstream commercial products. • Expand cultural horizons by viewing a variety of international flms.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Students will be expected to watch eight (8) flms online during the course of the semester. Since I have no way of verifying your screenings, reporting will have to be on the honor system. Screening credit will only be given to flms screened via legal sources, i.e. Netfix, , HBO GO, etc. Students will be expected to report their screenings (and the source of the screening) on a weekly basis via Blackboard discussion board. As much as is feasible, students should be social on Blackboard by sharing viewing recommendations and personally curated viewing lists in lieu of in-person screening series.

EVALUATION: In order to pass, students must view eight (8) flms online with the following stipulations:

1. Three (3) of your eight (8) screenings must come from the Criterion Collection.* 2. Films viewed for other flm classes, such as FILM 201 or FILM 369 do not count.

*For those of you who are not aware, WKU allows access to Kanopy, which is an online library of all kinds of flms, including the Criterion Collection. You can download the Kanopy app and enter your WKU login, or you can access it on your computer: https://wku.kanopy.com/login.

Students living on-campus also have free access to HBO GO. Visit https://td.wku.edu/TDClient/KB/ ArticleDet?ID=1693 for details. You may screen flms from your own DVD/Blu-ray collection or from checked out from the library. (They have an extensive collection!)

GRADE BREAKDOWN: The course is graded on a pass/fail basis. This is an all or nothing proposition. Students who do not view 8 flms will fail the class.

BLACKBOARD GRADE BOOK: I will make my best effort to keep a running tally of your screenings on Blackboard. Please consider the online grade book a courtesy to you, subject to errors given various upgrades and shifts in the software. I reserve the right to make grade book corrections to keep it consistent with the syllabus so that your grade refects true performance, not software or user error. If you see something that doesn’t make sense, please alert me!

DROP/AUDIT: The last day to drop this or any full-semester course with a W is April 13, 2021. This is also the last day to change full-semester courses from credit to audit.

PLAGIARISM: To represent ideas or interpretations taken from another source as one’s own is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious offense. The academic work of a student must be his or her own. Students must give the author(s) credit for any source material used. To lift content directly from a source without giving credit is a fagrant act. To present a borrowed passage after having changed a few words, even if the source is cited, is also plagiarism.

Disposition of Ofenses - Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty may receive from the instructor a failing grade in that portion of the course work in which the act is detected or a failing grade in the course without possibility of withdrawal. The faculty member may also present the case to the University Disciplinary Committee through the Offce of the Vice President for Student Affairs for disciplinary sanctions.
