  • Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Drummer Peter Erskine Develops Rich Content for New Beamz Player Compositions
Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Drummer Peter Erskine Develops Rich Content for New Beamz Player Compositions Peter Erskine’s Music Featured at Summer NAMM During Demonstration of New Beamz Player Interactive Music System Nashville, TN – June 18, 2010 – Beamz Interactive, an interactive music products company that develops innovative musical instruments and music entertainment products to enable people of all ages and skill levels to play music, today announced top jazz musician Peter Erskine’s involvement in the development of original rich content for the Beamz Player Interactive Music System. Erskine contributed a series of drum sounds, rhythmic loops and beats that were composed into original Beamz songs that are packaged with the new Beamz Player Interactive Music System, which is being demonstrated at the 2010 Summer NAMM Conference in Nashville (Booth #405). “I’m a dedicated Mac user, and felt a little like a stranger in a strange land when I first was introduced to the PC-based Beamz,” said Peter Erskine. “Within moments, I thought, ‘This is far out!’ I was instantly attracted to the immediacy that the instrument offers to everyone. The Beamz is a musical gateway or doorway that allows anyone to enter the world of sampling, loops and sound manipulation. For me the interest lies in reaching budding musicians who don’t necessarily have technical or musical instrument expertise, but who have music in their hearts. It’s one of the more user-friendly interfaces I’ve ever seen.” For over 35 years, Peter Erskine has been delighting his fans with award-winning, world-class Jazz ensembles.

  • Brecker's Blues
BRECKER’S BLUES: TRANSCRIPTION AND THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF SIX SELECTED IMPROVISED BLUES SOLOS BY JAZZ SAXOPHONIST MICHAEL BRECKER DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By David Rawlings Freedy, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Document Committee: James Akins, Advisor Joseph Duchi Dr. Russel Mikkelson ABSTRACT The following is an analysis of selected musical improvisations of tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker. The improvisations span the years 1987-99 and are all characterized by a shared underlying 12-bar chord structure commonly known as “Blues.” The improvisations at hand were chosen by the author by means of six necessary characteristics: 1. Performance over a 12- bar Blues (major or minor) harmonic progression; 2. Profundity or “specialness” of the improvisation as determined by the author; 3. Theoretical complexity of the improvisation sufficient to warrant an extended analysis as determined by the author; 4. Historical placement of the improvisations from 1987 to the year of Document submission; 5. Commercial availability of Compact Disc recordings of all of the improvisations; 6. Lack of availability of other transcriptions of the improvisations from either commercial or academic sources. It is the author’s contention that the transcriptions and analyses of the selected improvisations will help illustrate Mr. Brecker’s approach to the Blues as well as identify the theoretical underpinnings upon which these improvisations rest. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank my advisor, Professor James Akins, for his patience, support, and encouragement throughout my entire Doctoral degree program at Ohio State University.

  • Eliane Elias Seduces at Toronto Jazz Festival Posted 7/2/2013
Eliane Elias Seduces at Toronto Jazz Festival Posted 7/2/2013 A modest Chet Baker revival seems to be under way, judging by the recent release of several albums summoning the spirit of the ultra-low-key trumpeter-singer and the romantic, melodic songs he favored. In one of the highlights of this year’s Toronto Jazz Festival (June 20–29), pianist-singer Eliane Elias and her trio showcased her own recently issued Baker set, I Thought About You: A Tribute To Chet Baker (Concord Jazz). Unlike last year’s hypnotic, Grammy-nominated The Book Of Chet (Sunnyside) by Luciana Souza, which focused on Baker’s mournful ballads, the Elias album features more mid-tempo and uptempo songs; indeed, Baker’s output over his long career included many such tunes. It’s no coincidence that both albums are from outstanding Brazilian musician/singers. Baker profoundly changed the trajectory of Brazilian jazz—the tradition in which both Elias and Souza are steeped. “Chet Baker and the cool jazz movement had an enormous influence on the originators of bossa nova, like João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim,” Elias said between songs during her sold-out show at the Old Mill, an enormous Swiss chalet of a country inn not far from downtown Toronto. “In fact, Jobim used to tell me how much Chet had influenced him.” She cited Baker’s unaffected singing and his tendency to phrase over the bar line, both hallmarks of bossa nova. There’s an important similarity between Baker and Elias: He was decidedly a trumpeter who sang, not a singer who played trumpet; Elias is, first and foremost, a classically trained pianist and a composer, who also happens to sing.

  • Brecker and Patterns
Brecker and Patterns An Analysis of Michael Brecker's Melodic and Instrumental Devices Thesis for the degree of Master of Music Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) Department of Composition and Music Theory Autumn 1998 - Spring 1999 Ari Poutiainen © Ari Poutiainen 1999 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Brecker and Patterns - An Analysis of Michael Brecker's Melodic and Instrumental Devices ABSTRACT Only a few scientific studies or articles exist on Michael Brecker's improvisational style. The present work approaches Michael Brecker's style through a detailed analysis of his solos in the compositions "Straphangin'," "Nothing Personal," and "Peep." The approach to this analysis is similar to that of which jazz musicians use themselves. The analysis is based on selected audio material and transcriptions. David Baker's "Giants of Jazz" series was applied as a model for the form of the study. The applied theoretical framework of contemporary jazz improvisation is based on David Liebman's "A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody," and various other works. In this study, the aim was to define and describe certain melodic and instrumental devices which are characteristic of Brecker's expression. In the analysis, attention was given to the melodic devices which are based on the diminished, altered, pentatonic, and augmented scales, and on the superimposed "Giant Steps" chord progressions. For the instrumental devices, the focus of the analysis was on alternate fingerings, multiphonics, and fingering mannerisms. The use of these devices was divided into functional and non-functional. Some of the devices and their usage could not be discussed deeply enough in the three solo analyses alone, and further examples were therefore traced from Brecker's other performances.

  • Marc Johnson Shades of Jade
ECM Marc Johnson Shades of Jade Joe Lovano: tenor saxophone; John Scofield: guitar; Eliane Elias: piano; Marc Johnson: double-bass; Joey Baron: drums; Alain Mallet: organ ECM 1894 CD 06024 987 1477 (5) Release: October 4th, 2005 The album’s title has biographical significance. Marc Johnson first came to the attention of players and listeners around the world as the bassist with Bill Evans’ last great piano trio in the period 1978-80. The title track of Johnson’s new album “Shades of Jade” was inspired by the bassist in the first of Evans’ great trios, Scott La Faro, whose “Jade Visions”, on 1961’s “Sunday At The Village Vanguard” provided an object lesson in how intensity could be focused in inward-looking music, of enduring beauty. Johnson’s ECM debut recordings, in 1985, were with his own Bass Desires quartet, foregrounding the guitars of Bill Frisell and John Scofield – a group frequently as outgoing as the Evans trio was introverted – and as a member of John Abercrombie’s trio. “Shades of Jade” is only Johnson’s third leader date for the label, but he has been an important contributor to many ECM recordings. His list of session credits for the label includes albums with Ralph Towner (“Lost and Found”), pianist John Taylor (“Rosslyn”), saxophonist Charles Lloyd (“Lift Every Voice”) and bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi (“Cité de la Musique”). He continues to be associated with John Abercrombie and appears on his most recent discs, “Cat’n’Mouse” and “Class Trip”. In all of these contexts his touch and tone and advanced harmonic understanding are well-deployed.

A soli 11 anni iniziò a studiare contrabbasso nella scuola pubblica, poi fu ammesso all'High School of Music and Art e iniziò a prendere lezioni private con Fred Zimmerman. Eddie continuò i suoi studi alla Juilliard School of Music, i suoi compagni erano Chick Corea, Hubert Laws, James Levine, Itzak Perlman, Paula Robinson and Gary Karr.
