Bob Marley’s Music as an Alternative Communicative Channel in Postcolonial Movements for Development and Social Change Cara-Marie Findlay Media, Globalization and Development Malmö University October 2020 Findlay 1.2 Essay Introduction 1 Bob Marley’s Music as an Alternative Communicative Channel in Postcolonial Movements for Development and Social Change The mediatization of the world is an important concept to understand in connection to development and social change. As Martin Scott states, “Media not only increase[s] our access to knowledge of events happening around the world, but also (seemingly) enable[s] us to influence them” (Scott, 2014, p. 1). There seems to be a tendency “to focus on the very latest technological supports” (Mattoni & Treré, 2014, p. 255) when considering the social movements of the present. This “technological-fascination bias” often neglects “the relevance that prior technological supports had and continue to have in social movements” (Mattoni & Treré, 2014, p. 255). There is no doubt that today’s technology affects “mediation processes”—the flow, circulation, and interpretation of media (Mattoni & Treré, 2014, p. 260), which in turn affects social movements. However, in the age of the Internet with its latest applications, it can be easy to neglect the roles of alternative media, such as music, in social movements. “Music [has] played an integral role in social movements and liberation movements” (Prestholdt, 2019, p. 77). This essay focuses on Bob Marley’s Music as an alternative communicative channel in postcolonial movements for development and social change. In the context of this essay, postcolonialism refers to both: condition—the state of being after colonialism and imperialism; and to anti-colonialism—against all forms of colonial power (McEwan 2018, pp. -

Get Up Stand Up sarebbe stato ufficialmente l'ultimo brano proposto live.

CITYREALTY NEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT MANHATTAN NEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT May 2015 Summary
MAY 2015 MANHATTAN NEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT CITYREALTY NEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT MANHATTAN NEW DEVELOPMENT REPORT May 2015 Summary Apartment prices in new development condominiums in Manhattan have increased at a fast clip, a trend boosted by the upper end of the market. Sales of new condominium units included in this report are expected to aggregate between $27.6 and $33.6 billion in sales through 2019. The average price of these new development units is expected to reach a record of $5.9 million per unit in 2015. At the same time, far fewer units are being built than during the last development boom, in the mid-2000s, therefore the number of closed sales is expected to increase more modestly than their prices. 2013 2014 2015-2019* TOTAL NEW DEVELOPMENT SALES $2.7B $4.1B $27.6B-$33.6B+ Pricing information for the 4,881 new development units covered in this report comes from active and in-contract listings, offering plans, and projections based on listing prices. For a complete list of buildings included in this report, see pages 5-6 (New Developments by Building Detail). Ultimately, sales of these apartments will total roughly $27.6 to $33.6 billion through 2019. Sales in new developments totaled $4.1 billion in 2014, up 50 percent from 2013. The 2013 total, $2.7 billion, also represented a significant increase from the $1.9 billion recorded in 2012. While total sales volume has increased in recent years, it is still substantially less than at the height of the market, in 2008, when new development sales totaled $10.4 billion. -

Examining the Influence of the Urban Environment on Parent’s Time, Energy, and Resources for Engagement in their Children’s Learning By Carrie Makarewicz A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Elizabeth Deakin, Chair Professor Karen Chapple Professor Susan Stone Fall 2013 Examining the influence of the urban environment on parent’s time, energy, and resources for engagement in their children’s learning © Copyright 2013 by Carrie Makarewicz All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Examining the Influence of the Urban Environment on Parent’s Time, Energy, and Resources for Engagement in their Children’s Learning by Carrie Makarewicz Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Elizabeth Deakin, Chair Decades of research have shown that parents play a critical role in their children’s education and learning, particularly if they engage with their children’s education at home, get involved in their children’s schools, and involve their children in community-based activities and programs that provide additional types of learning and socialization. However, research has also identified that barriers in the urban environment often prevent parents from being more fully engaged, including barriers related to transportation, housing, and neighborhood safety. These urban environmental barriers are rarely mentioned in the current school reform debates, nor are there detailed analyses of how actual environmental issues present barriers to parents. This dissertation fills this gap by examining how the urban environment affects parents’ time, energy, and resources for engagement in their children’s learning. -
