CHAPTER 14: PERSONAL & COMMUNITY RESOURCES

This chapter is for you to use to plan for your release and to use as a reference after your release. It includes addresses, phone numbers and web sites that you can use to find out about programs and other help available after your release. You may want to ask a friend or family member to help you find the information you need. Keep in mind that this chapter does not include all of the services available to you after your release.

REMINDER Being successful on the outside involves:

Thinking Planning Decision Making Motivation Determination

PERSONAL RESOURCES

Personal resources include your attitude, your ability to set realistic goals, your motivation to take active steps to reach your goals, your decision to stick with it until you succeed, and your belief in yourself and others.

Without personal resources, you will fail. Why? You need to trust and encourage yourself to be all that you can be. Without self-confidence and respect, you may never know the direction in which you need to move.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

What are your personal resources? Is it your faith? Is it your belief in yourself? Is it your sense of humor? Is it your attitude? List your personal resources below.

1. ______

2. ______

3. ______

4. ______

5. ______

6. ______Just as you have personal resources, you have community resources, places you can turn to when you need help. There are many community resources available to you. 294

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Many people say, “ I don’t need any help .” If you hear yourself saying this, ask yourself, “Is my pride getting in the way of my success ?” If the answer is “yes” , think of the things and people you really value and remember your goal(s).

When you contact people or organizations for help, be prepared: write down the questions you wish to ask and the agency address and telephone number. Be ready to take notes. When you speak to someone at any agency, remember to the following :

1. State your name and explain why you are calling. The person on the phone may ask some questions to better serve you – be patient and polite.

2. If you are given an appointment time, ask for the name of the person you are scheduled to meet with. Write down the person’s name.

3. Find out if there is anything you need to bring to the appointment (write it down).Ask for directions if you need them.

4. Before you hang up, repeat back the time and date of the appointment, who you will meet with, and what you need to bring.

5. Write down any additional information, or change information if you need to.

6. Thank the person for his/her time.

FOOD AND SHELTER

Below is a list of housing resources around the State. They provide a wide range of services, including shelter, food, counseling, and job skills programs. The list should not be viewed as comprehensive. Eligibility and services vary among the agencies. Contact the agency to find out about eligibility requirements for the most up to date information. It is also suggested that you contact the Board of Social Services in your county for additional resources.

Note: Please use the homeless provider directory key, located at the top of each table, in order to identify resources at each agency.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Education is the key to a better life. If college interests you, write and request an application form, catalog, and college admission packet. Many schools offer evening and weekend programs, and these programs often qualify for financial aid. Often, it is not easy being a part time student. It may take longer to reach your goals by attending school part time, but it is well worth the rewards.

For more information and referrals to a community mental health agency, call (800)-382-6717 or phone the office contact at the screening center in your area. You can also get information about mental health services at the NJ Division of Human Services web page: http://www.state.nj.us/humanservices/dmhas/home/ .

If you are in emotional crisis and cannot wait for a regular appointment to receive services, you can go to a Screening/Crisis center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may walk in to a screening center without an appointment or you may have a family member or friend bring you to your local screening center.
