Master Driver Morizo, Seorang Presiden Toyota Sekaligus Pembalap Mobil Master Driver Morizo, Seorang Presiden Toyota Sekaligus Pembalap Mobil Komitmen Toyota yang dengan filosofi making ever-better cars bukanlah gimmick marketing semata. Dalam filosofi ini terdapat keinginan tulus dari Toyota untuk selalu menghadirkan sarana mobilitas yang lebih baik dari waktu ke waktu seiring perkembangan tren, teknologi, lifestyle, dan kebutuhan konsumen yang terus bergerak secara dinamis. Ada 2 metode yang dipakai oleh Toyota dalam menguji dan mengembangkan sebuah kendaraan baru. Yang pertama tentunya dengan memperoleh langsung input dari konsumen melalui semangat Genchi Genbutsu atau “mengumpulkan fakta langsung dari sumbernya”. Di Indonesia, metode ini berhasil diterapkan saat pengembangan Kijang sejak generasi pertama di tahun 1977 hingga sekarang tetap menjadi mobil pilihan keluarga Indonesia dari generasi ke generasi. Kijang tidak akan mencapai posisi seperti sekarang jika sejak awal tidak mengamati dan memenuhi kebutuhan sebagaian besar keluarga Indonesia. Di mana daya angkut luas merupakan rujukan utama supaya dapat memenuhi kebutuhan pergi sekeluarga saat berlibur ataupun mudik. Di sini Kijang berhasil menyajikannya dengan cara yang pas dan tetap menjaga fungsionalitas sebagai MPV. Kebutuhan lain seperti irit bensin namun tetap bertenaga ditambah keandalan dan ketangguhan di berbagai situasi dan kondisi dibuktikan secara nyata seiring waktu. Metode kedua adalah melalui arena balap di mana mobil balap Toyota ditekan hingga limit tertinggi dalam kondisi penuh tantangan ekstrem untuk melihat seberapa tangguh komponen mobil yang digunakan. Database berupa informasi teknis dan pengalaman engineer Toyota yang terlibat dimasukkan ke dalam langkah pengembangan untuk menciptakan mobil yang lebih baik di masa depan. Keseriusan di dunia balap sejak dulu dibuktikan dengan partisipasi Toyota di ajang Mobilgas Round Australia Rally tahun 1957. Kedua pendekatan di atas didukung sepenuhnya oleh Akio Toyoda, Presiden Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). Dalam prosesnya, Akio yang juga pecinta balap berperan aktif dalam pengembangan mobil baru Toyota. Bahkan ia memiliki jam terbang yang membanggakan di ajang balap ketahanan Nurburgring 24 Jam serta memiliki SIM internal tertinggi yang hanya bisa dimiliki oleh sebagian test driver terbaik Toyota sehingga memperoleh julukan Master Driver. Biografi Singkat Akio Toyoda Akio Toyoda lahir di Nagoya, Jepang pada 3 Mei 1956. Ia lulus dari Universitas Keio dengan gelar Sarjana Hukum di tahun 1979, kemudian lanjut ke Babson College di Amerika Serikat dengan gelar master bidang administrasi bisnis di tahun 1982. Ia bergabung dengan TMC di bulan April 1984. Akio masuk ke dalam Dewan Direksi TMC pada bulan Juni 2000. Ia membuat dan mengawasi gazoo.com, sebuah website yang berisi puluhan toko virtual untuk barang dan jasa konsumen serta menyediakan informasi mengenai kendaraan baru dan bekas, termasuk mengawasi operasi pemasaran domestik dan Amerika. Pada bulan Juni 2001, ia diangkat sebagai Chief Officer of Asia & China Operations Center, dan Managing Director di Juni 2002. Akio diangkat menjadi Senior Managing Director di bulan Juni 2003 dan pada Januari 2005 menjadi Chief Officer of China Operations Group sekaligus Chief Officer of Asia, Oceania & Middle East Operations Group. Pada bulan Juni 2005, ia menjadi Vice President dan Representative Director TMC. Akio Toyoda resmi diangkat sebagai Presiden TMC pada bulan Juni 2009 hingga sekarang. Test Driver Yang Bercita-Cita Sebagai Sopir Taksi Agar Bisa Berkeliling Kota Membawa Mobil Seharian Dalam sebuah posting di akun resmi Instagram akiotoyoda_official, Akio mengaku bahwa ia pernah bercita-cita menjadi sopir taksi di masa kecilnya karena bisa membawa mobil seharian keliling kota. Cita-cita tersebut belum pernah terlaksana karena Akio tenggelam dalam kesibukannya menimba ilmu dan dilanjutkan bertugas sebagai karyawan dan eksekutif di TMC. Sampai akhirnya Akio bertemu dengan Hiromu Naruse, seorang test driver kawakan yang juga memegang license tertinggi sebagai Master Driver Toyota pertama. Secara terbuka Hiromu memberikan kritik tentang dasar-dasar mengemudi kepada Akio yang di tahun 2003 menjabat sebagai Vice President TMC. “If you feel like it, even if just once a month, I'll teach you how to drive,” Hiromu menawarkan diri sekaligus menantang Akio untuk menjadi seorang test driver. Padahal ketika itu usia Akio sudah lebih dari 40 tahun, pun dengan Hiromu yang kelahiran tahun 1944. Keinginan untuk dapat menilai sebuah mobil baru dengan tepat membuat Akio menerima tantangan tersebut, bahkan kelak ia dipercaya menentukan apakah sebuah produk sudah siap untuk dipasarkan. Hiromu mengajarkan Akio dengan cara yang sederhana. Ia hanya meminta Akio mengikutinya dari belakang menggunakan Supra A80 di trek balap. Saat lampu rem menyala, Akio harus ikut mengerem, dan ketika Hiromu menginjak pedal gas untuk akselerasi, Akio harus segera berusaha mengejarnya. Sampai akhirnya ia mengajak Akio mencoba langsung sirkuit Nurburgring, Jerman. Di sirkuit berjulukan The Green Hell itu, Akio benar-benar merasakan tantangan mengingat karakternya yang lebih mirip jalan pegunungan dengan lintasan yang tidak kenal kompromi ketimbang sirkuit balap beraspal mulus dan memiliki sistem pengaman memadai. Tahapan berikutnya dari pelatihan ala Hiromu dimulai. Ia menantang Akio untuk berlaga di arena balap sesungguhnya. Kembali ke Jepang, Akio berlaga di balap ketahanan di sirkuit Twin Ring Motegi menggunakan Toyota Yaris di tahun 2007. Tujuannya hanya satu, yakni selamat hingga garis finish. Akio melanjutkan balapan ke Okayama International Circuit di mana ia merasakan balap di tengah hujan lebat dan di-overlap oleh sebagian besar pembalap. Berlaga di Nurburgring 24 Jam Melihat Akio yang terus mengalami kemajuan dalam hal skill balap, Hiromu menantangnya untuk berlaga di balap ketahanan Nurburgring 24 Jam. Lomba ini merupakan balap ketahanan paling menantang bagi pembalap amatir. Tapi itu bukan masalah bagi Hiromu karena ia melihatnya sebagai kesempatan untuk melatih Akio dan karyawan Toyota dengan memberikan pengalaman terjun langsung mengembangkan dan menguji mobil sport di arena sesungguhnya. Tim balap GAZOO Racing pun terbentuk untuk berlaga di Nurburgring 24 Jam tahun 2007. Tidak dikelola oleh profesional di bidang balap, tim ini justru mengajak karyawan TMC untuk turun sebagai tim balap dan tim mekanik. Uniknya, tim hanya mengandalkan Toyota Altezza yang sudah stop produksi di tahun 2005. Tim tersebut mempergunakan nama GAZOO Racing yang berisi para antusias balap level amatir. Dalam kesempatan tersebut Akio mengatakan bahwa berkompetisi selama 24 jam di sirkuit terberat di dunia Nürburgring menghadirkan lebih banyak tantangan daripada melaju di trek balap normal selama 3 tahun. Akio melanjutkan bahwa Hiromu selalu berkata bahwa road trains car. Balapan memang tidak mengenal ampun, tapi itu menempa mobil dan manusia untuk menjadi lebih baik. Nürburgring adalah tempat untuk mengetahui bahwa roads make cars. Akio dan Hiromu tidak memiliki target muluk-muluk, cukup bisa finish dan seluruh anggota tim bisa merasakan kerasnya persaingan dunia balap. Selain itu, karakter sirkuit Nurburgring dengan panjang lebih dari 20 km yang lebih mirip jalan raya memberikan tantangan jauh lebih besar dari sirkuit di Jepang. Banyak ilmu dan pengalaman bisa didalami oleh tim di sirkuit yang sangat menuntut kecakapan mobil, pembalap dan mekanik untuk selanjutnya diolah untuk making ever-better cars. Penugasan karyawan Toyota untuk melatih mereka supaya sanggup berkompetisi di kondisi ekstrem dalam usaha memperoleh feedback mengenai kendaraan produksi massal terus dilanjutkan dengan ikut serta di Nurburgring 24 Jam tahun berikutnya. Perjuangan tim dalam mengembangkan sumber daya dan mobil balap berbuah manis karena berhasil menggapai juara pertama di kelas SP8 dan SP9 mengandalkan Lexus LFA, serta di kelas GT-3 mengandalkan Toyota 86 di Nürburgring 24 Jam 2014. Akio merupakan bagian dari pembalap yang menang di kategori SP8. Call Sign: Morizo Karena kegiatan balap yang rentan bahaya, banyak yang mempertanyakan partisipasi Akio di dunia balap mengingat posisinya sebagai petinggi perusahaan internasional. Untuk membuat dirinya tidak terlalu menyolok, Akio menggunakan nama samaran Morizo sejak partisipasi awal di arena Nürburgring 24 Jam tahun 2007. Namun saat ini nama tersebut bukanlah rahasia, di mana jumlah orang yang mengetahui dan mendukung partisipasinya terus bertambah, bahkan sudah menjadi icon balap TGR dengan stiker lucu berwajah Akio yang ditempel di spion mobil balap ketika ia berlaga. Penggunaan nama Morizo kini memiliki peran baru untuk menghilangkan penghalang antara atasan dan bawahan sehingga memungkinkan Akio untuk mengekspresikan perasaannya sebagai pecinta mobil sport yang terkadang tidak mudah dilakukan saat berbicara sebagai Presiden TMC. Setelah Hiromu Naruse Meninggal Malang tak dapat ditolak, Hiromu Naruse meninggal dunia karena kecelakaan di jalan umum di dekat trek favoritnya, Nürburgring tahun 2010. Saat itu ia sedang pulang ke rumah setelah mengetes Lexus LFA yang merupakan salah satu karya jeniusnya. Kejadian tersebut tidak menyurutkan langkah GAZOO Racing untuk melanjutkan langkah di dunia balap untuk terus berkembang dan memainkan peran sentral dalam membuat mobil yang lebih baik dalam siklus tanpa akhir. Ungkapan making ever better-cars yang sering diungkapkan oleh Akio Toyoda sejak menjabat sebagai Presiden TMC mewakili perasaan yang diwarisi dari Hiromu. In order to respond to customer requests for improved driving performance, Daihatsu overcame manufacturer boundaries to work together with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and develop a car that feels good to drive and whose handling responds accurately to driver input. Compared to existing models, the GR SPORT features increased body rigidity, achieved by adding reinforcing materials to the underbody and adjusting its shape; this reduces body torsion and results in a smooth and stable ride. By optimizing its suspension, and by adopting parts that enhance aerodynamics, the car boasts improved nimbleness and stability.

For the next-generation coupe, the same fanatics behind Toyota Gazoo Racing’s championship racecars looked to engineer even greater curve-hugging precision, with a focus on added stability, power and improved aerodynamics. The result? A track-ready, driver’s car made for pure fun. How’d they do it? To start, the GR team built upon the nimble attributes of the current generation 86 chassis by adding strategically placed high-strength steel, new cross members up front and a full-ring frame in the rear. Then, they engineered nearly 18% more horsepower and 11% more torque by utilizing a larger, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine.
