PREFACE All doors were opened to start this travel, beginning for the many magical pristine forest of Ecuador, Sierra de Juárez Oaxaca and los Tuxtlas in Veracruz, some of the most biodiverse zones in the planet, were I had the honor to put my feet, contemplate their beauty and perfection and work in their mystical forest. It was a dream into reality! The collaboration with the German counterpart started at the beginning of my academic career and I never imagine that this will be continued to bring this research that summarizes the efforts of many researchers that worked hardly in the overwhelming and incredible biodiverse tropics. -

16 Fern classification ALAN R. SMITH, KATHLEEN M. PRYER, ERIC SCHUETTPELZ, PETRA KORALL, HARALD SCHNEIDER, AND PAUL G. WOLF 16.1 Introduction and historical summary / Over the past 70 years, many fern classifications, nearly all based on morphology, most explicitly or implicitly phylogenetic, have been proposed. The most complete and commonly used classifications, some intended primar• ily as herbarium (filing) schemes, are summarized in Table 16.1, and include: Christensen (1938), Copeland (1947), Holttum (1947, 1949), Nayar (1970), Bierhorst (1971), Crabbe et al. (1975), Pichi Sermolli (1977), Ching (1978), Tryon and Tryon (1982), Kramer (in Kubitzki, 1990), Hennipman (1996), and Stevenson and Loconte (1996). Other classifications or trees implying relationships, some with a regional focus, include Bower (1926), Ching (1940), Dickason (1946), Wagner (1969), Tagawa and Iwatsuki (1972), Holttum (1973), and Mickel (1974). Tryon (1952) and Pichi Sermolli (1973) reviewed and reproduced many of these and still earlier classifica• tions, and Pichi Sermolli (1970, 1981, 1982, 1986) also summarized information on family names of ferns. Smith (1996) provided a summary and discussion of recent classifications. With the advent of cladistic methods and molecular sequencing techniques, there has been an increased interest in classifications reflecting evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic studies robustly support a basal dichotomy within vascular plants, separating the lycophytes (less than 1 % of extant vascular plants) from the euphyllophytes (Figure 16.l; Raubeson and Jansen, 1992, Kenrick and Crane, 1997; Pryer et al., 2001a, 2004a, 2004b; Qiu et al., 2006). Circumscription of the Group by Kunio IwATsUKI Botanical Institute, College of Science, University of I<yoto (Received May 25, 1964) The thelypteroid ferns can not be clearly circumscribed even at present, and we have several genera which are included in or excluded from this series of ferns according to the conceptions of various authors. To better understand the accurate boundary of our series, some of the recent works will be referred to here. The recent treatment of importance concerning the circumscription and relationship of the thelypteroid ferns are those given to the fern classifications by CHRisTENsEN (1938), CHiNG (1940), CopELAND (1947), HoLTTuM (1947 etc.) and others. In the last decade, several contributions have been made but they are fragmentary. The genera which are included in our series by some authors or excluded by the others have been studied by various botanists from the stand- point of morphology or taxonomy, but their investigations are independent from each other, little reference being made to the works by similar methods and conceptions. -

Recientemente ha sido publicada una nueva propuesta de clasificación de las plantas vasculares sin semilla (PPG1) hasta el rango de género, basada en caracteres morfológicos y filogenias moleculares, siendo consensuada por un gran número de especialistas en pteridología. Tras un año desde su aparición ha sido ampliamente aceptada por la comunidad científica. Esta nueva propuesta de clasificación presenta una serie de importantes cambios respecto a sistemas anteriores, entre ellos el empleado para la Flora Iberica I. Este trabajo plantea una actualización a la propuesta del PPG1 de la clasificación y nomenclatura de los taxones de licófitos y helechos de la flora ibérica. [en] Novelties for the iberian pteridoflora in the context of a new system for the seedless vascular plants Abstract. Recently, a new classification proposal for the seedless vascular plants, until the range of genus (PPG1), has come to light. This system considers both morphological characters and molecular phylogenies, and is based on consensus by a large number of specialists in pteridology. In its first year of life, it is being widely accepted by the scientific community. This taxonomic classification presents a series of novelties with respect to previous systems, including the one used for Flora Iberica. -

Rothfels, [email protected] Abstract We present a family-level classification for the eupolypod II clade of leptosporangiate ferns, one of the two major lineages within the Eupolypods, and one of the few parts of the fern tree of life where family-level relationships were not well understood at the time of publication of the 2006 fern classification by Smith & al. Comprising over 2500 species, the composition and particularly the relationships among the major clades of this group have historically been contentious and defied phylogenetic resolution until very recently. Our classification reflects the most current available data, largely derived from published molecular phylogenetic studies. -

We present a revised classification for extant ferns, with emphasis on ordinal and familial ranks, and a synop- sis of included genera. Our classification reflects recently published phylogenetic hypotheses based on both morphological and molecular data. Within our new classification, we recognize four monophyletic classes, 11 monophyletic orders, and 37 families, 32 of which are strongly supported as monophyletic. One new family, Cibotiaceae Korall, is described. The phylogenetic affinities of a few genera in the order Polypodiales are unclear and their familial placements are therefore tentative. The Family Thelypteridaceae in Europe
Acta Botánica Malacitana, 8: 47-58 Málaga, 1983 THE FAMILY THELYPTERIDACEAE IN EUROPE R. E. HOLTTUM SUMMARY: Thelypteridaceae are mainly tropical ferns, the total number of species is about one thousand. The five European species represent five different groups, each of which has recently been accorded generic status. Thelypteris palustris Schott (including three varieties) extends throughout north temperate regions, with a closely allied species south of the equator; chromosome numter n=35. Phaegopteris connectilis (Michx) Watt (triploid with base number 30) and Oreopteris limbosperma (All.) Holub (n=34) are members of small genera confined to north temperate re- gions. Stegnogramma pozoi (Lag.) K. Iwa -cs. (n=36) represents a genus of 12-15 species, mainly in Africa and Asia, with one in Mexico. Christella dentata (Forsk.) Brownsey & Jermy is a wide-ranging and variable tetra- ploid species of a pantropic genus (c. 60 app) the centre of distribu- tion of wich appears to be Burma-Assam (base number 36). The genus Cyclosurus (s. str.) comprises a small pantropic group of species with grow (like Thelypteris) in open permanently swampy ground; I belive Cycicsorus and Thelypteris to be closely related genera. Stegno- gramma is related to Sphaerostephanos which (in arrangement of Holttum) is the most diversified genus in the Old World with c. 140 spp. in Mal -esia . Christella is probably also related to Sphaerostephanos though less near- ly than Stegnogramma. RESUMEN: Las Thelypteridaceae son helechos principalmente tropicales, comprende aproximadamente mil especies. Las cinco especies europeas re- presentan cinco grupos diferentes cada uno de los cuales ha recibido re- cientemente un estatus genérico.
