Transcript: Song & Music in the Movement A Conversation with Candie Carawan, Charles Cobb, Bettie Mae Fikes, Worth Long, Charles Neblett, and Hollis Watkins, September 19 – 20, 2017. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing.

  • Inspirational Songs for Vocals, Piano, and Guitar. Melody, Chords and Lyrics to Accompany the Album
Inspirational songs for vocals, piano, and guitar. Melody, chords and lyrics to accompany the album. Joy In Our Hearts Greetings to you music lovers! Thank you so much for wanting to sing and/or play the songs on my new CD, “Joy In Our Hearts.” I am honored and blessed that you are helping me get my music out into the world! I truly believe that positive music is a healing force and that spreading positive affirmations and messages is a noble act. So whether you are singing or playing for your own enjoyment, or performing these songs to an audience, you are helping to heal the world – one song at a time. As I have said with all my other CDs and songbooks, I encourage you to make these songs or chants your own. I give you permission to change the words, alter the melody, change the key – whatever it takes for you to “own” it as your own. The chords and keys to all of this music is in the key that I sang it on the CD, but at the end of this book I have included my “Karen Drucker Handy Dandy Easy Music Method,” which will help you transpose the key to a key that works for you, help you figure out the chords, and maybe a few other tidbits you didn’t know. As you will see I have written quite a lot of these songs and chants with other New Thought artists. I would encourage you to check out their websites and find more wonderful music from each of them! Thank you again for supporting my music and I hope you enjoy these songs and chants! Musically, Karen CREDITS John Hoy: guitar, keyboard on track 5, bass on tracks 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12 John R Burr:

  • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

Queensland A.M. Radio Stations. Part of the most comprehensive list ever compiled of Australian A.M. broadcasting stations. 4CM Brisbane 02-1920. Experimental station owned by Dr Val McDowall on longwave using 20 watts. Built by Thomas Elliott (Australia’s television pioneer and first Chief Engineer of 4BC). Operated by Charles Stevens from experimental station 4RG (later an original staff member of 4QG). Broadcast regular Sunday night concerts 1921-1922, and live broadcasts from His Majesty’s Theatre. Moved into the Old Windmill Tower in 1926, and conducted the first Australian television experiments from 1929 with a 30 line Baird system. Moved to medium wave (1250 KHz.) using 10 watts in August 1933. Granted Australia’s first television licence on 1-7-1934 (also the first television licence in the Southern Hemisphere). Television transmissions (earlier called ‘radiovision’) were daily from 1935 for one hour at 7- 30 PM with an increase to 180 lines on 136 metres, and often received in Melbourne. The first faces on Australian television were Mickey Mouse playing the piano in an M.G.M. cartoon on 10-4-1934, followed by film star Janet Gaynor in 1935 (see separate “Australia’s First Licensed Television Station” article).
