World Wildlife Day On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3rd March, as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. World Wildlife Day has now become the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife. One of the best ways to catch the attention of your friends and spread a message at the same time - especially with animals - is to share a cool fact.

Thursday 21st International Day of Forests The theme for 2019 is Forests and Education and we want the world to know how you educate children and youth about the importance of trees and forests. Today, when more than half the world’s population lives in cities and are increasingly disconnected from nature, it is more essential than ever to bring an understanding and awareness of forests and their benefits into children’s lives at an early age. Join the conversation on social media using the #IntlForestDay hashtag. Pass on some of this year’s key messages or take a photo of your favourite forest and share it with us and your friends. Check out www.fao.org/international-day-of-forests

Friday 22nd World Water Day World Water Day is about focusing attention on the importance of water. This year’s theme for World Water Day, ‘Leaving no one behind’, adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit. Neighbours Day Neighbours Day Aotearoa is a collaborative campaign organised and supported by Lifewise, Inspiring Communities, The Mental Health Foundation, Christchurch Methodist Mission, New Zealand Red Cross, Neighbourhood Support New Zealand and Housing New Zealand. Whether you live in a suburb, on a city block, in an apartment or on a rural property, you have neighbours – and knowing your neighbours matters. We believe that every connection you have with your neighbours makes your neighbourhood more friendly, fun and safe. By encouraging better connected neighbourhoods and more everyday ‘neighbourliness’, neighbours can be stronger and more resilient, significantly enhancing the wellbeing of individuals, family/whanau and the wider community. Active Transport support for Workplaces ‘Active Transport’ is a great way to enrich people’s lives through increased physical activity as well as benefiting the environment, your health, and your wallet. There are benefits for you, your workplace and your community with less congestion, higher productivity, fewer sick days and happier staff, colleagues and friends. It’s easy to combine active and public transport – you can now bike and bus - our local buses have bike racks attached. Active transport also includes walking, e-biking, skate-boarding, and (non- motorised) scootering – any physical activity as a means of getting from a to b. Visit Travel Safe’s website or contact Sport BOP to find out about opportunities and resources that will help keep you keep safe and active around Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty. For example, Sport BOP could facilitate some cycle confidence sessions at your workplace.

Biking/Cycling Groups Tauranga and the Western Bay are lucky enough to have many fantastic volunteers that coordinate weekly riding/cycling groups. Some of these groups are able to cater for varied levels of riding experience. Please visit Get Involved Active Directory to see if any of these riding groups are near you. If anyone is feeling like they would like to ride their bike more, but lack some confidence, please email Sport BOP’s Cycling Coordinator, Andrew, to put your name on a waiting list for the next Cycle Savvy Course [email protected]
