UK Overseas Territories
INFORMATION PAPER United Kingdom Overseas Territories - Toponymic Information United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs), also known as British Overseas Territories (BOTs), have constitutional and historical links with the United Kingdom, but do not form part of the United Kingdom itself. The Queen is the Head of State of all the UKOTs, and she is represented by a Governor or Commissioner (apart from the UK Sovereign Base Areas that are administered by MOD). Each Territory has its own Constitution, its own Government and its own local laws. The 14 territories are: Anguilla; Bermuda; British Antarctic Territory (BAT); British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT); British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Falkland Islands; Gibraltar; Montserrat; Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands; UK Sovereign Base Areas. PCGN recommend the term ‘British Overseas Territory Capital’ for the administrative centres of UKOTs. Production of mapping over the UKOTs does not take place systematically in the UK. Maps produced by the relevant territory, preferably by official bodies such as the local government or tourism authority, should be used for current geographical names. National government websites could also be used as an additional reference. Additionally, FCDO and MOD briefing maps may be used as a source for names in UKOTs. See the FCDO White Paper for more information about the UKOTs. ANGUILLA The territory, situated in the Caribbean, consists of the main island of Anguilla plus some smaller, mostly uninhabited islands. It is separated from the island of Saint Martin (split between Saint-Martin (France) and Sint Maarten (Netherlands)), 17km to the south, by the Anguilla Channel. -

FIN-2021-A003 March 11, 2021 Advisory on the Financial Action Task Force-Identified Jurisdictions with Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Counter-Proliferation Deficiencies On February 25, 2021, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) updated its list of jurisdictions with strategic deficiencies in their regimes to counter money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing. The changes may affect U.S. financial institutions’ obligations and risk-based approaches with respect to relevant jurisdictions. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is SAR filing request issuing this advisory to inform financial institutions of FinCEN requests that financial updates to the FATF list of jurisdictions with strategic anti- institutions only use the money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism updated mandatory SAR form (AML/CFT) and counter-proliferation financing deficiencies. and reference this advisory in As part of the FATF’s listing and monitoring process to SAR field 2 (Filing Institution Note ensure compliance with its international standards, the FATF to FinCEN) and the narrative identifies certain jurisdictions as having strategic deficiencies by including the following key 1 term: “FATF FIN-2021-A003.” in their regimes. Financial institutions should consider the FATF’s statements when reviewing their obligations and risk-based policies, procedures, and practices with respect to the jurisdictions noted below.2 In October 2020, the FATF restarted its work on identifying jurisdictions with strategic AML/ CFT deficiencies. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the FATF prioritized its review by focusing on jurisdictions with expired or expiring action plan deadlines.3 The FATF gave the other jurisdictions identified as “Jurisdictions under Increased Monitoring” the option to provide a status report. -

The Turks and Caicos Islands Standard Note: SN/IA/5038 Last updated: 11 April 2012 Author: Jon Lunn and Gavin Thompson Section International Affairs and Defence Section; Economic Policy and Statistics Section This note briefly reviews the crisis of political and economic governance which has affected the Turks and Caicos Islands since 2008, leading to the imposition of direct rule, the launching of anti-corruption investigations and, with the economy experiencing serious problems, the exceptional introduction by the British Government of a rescue package in the form of a loan guarantee of £160 million over five years. The British Government has expressed the hope that elections for a new Turks and Caicos Government can take place in 2012, bringing direct rule to an end. Direct rule has caused considerable discontent amongst some sections of the local population.
