Most if not all current subpopulations of dholes are relatively small and isolated, and often exhibit severe fluctuations in numbers. Dholes warrant listing as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. 2019 PHVA WORKSHOP In February 2019, over 28 dhole experts from 9 countries gathered in Kasetsart University and Khao Yai National Park, Thailand for 6 days of intensive conservation planning discussion. This Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) workshop was hosted by the IUCN SSC Canid Specialist Group’s Dhole Working Group and Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University and was organized in collaboration with IUCN SSC Conservation Planning Specialist Group. Participants worked together to develop a vision for the future of dholes, to identify and prioritize strategies and actions in different countries to achieving this vision, and to agree on a species distribution model that may help in evaluating the suitability of the landscape and estimate dhole populations and metapopulations. Population viability modelling helped participants to better understand the relative viability of small, fragmented dhole populations under threat. 1 ISSUE-BASED GOALS AND STRATEGIES A threat analysis by workshop participants identified four main categories of threats to dhole populations across the species’ range: habitat and prey loss; human-dhole conflict; domestic dogs and disease transmission; and insufficient scientific knowledge. Cross-country working groups discussed these issues and identified goals and potential strategies to address them. POPULATION VIABILITY ANALYSIS (PVA) Scientific data and expert opinion were used to develop a dhole population viability model. Our limited understanding

    34/ The Third Pole BUFFER ZONE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN PROTECTED AREAS OF NEPAL Narayan Prasad Bhusal Associate Professor Department of Geography Education Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Abstract Maintenance of eco-system diversity is often carried out by establishing national parks, wildlife reserves and other protected areas. The fourth amendment of the National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act in 1992 made the provision of buffer zone for protected areas considering buffer zone, an area of 2km in the vicinity of the park could benefi t from park revenue (30-50 percent) and in return the community is supposed to participate and assist in park management activities. Between 1996 and 2010 Government of Nepal demarcated buffer zones of 12 protected areas covering a total area of 5602.67 square kilometer in 83 VDCs and two Municipalities of 27 districts where benefi ting human popula- tion is over 0.9 million. In the buffer zone management programme emphasis has been given on the natural resource management where need of eco-friendly land use practices and peoples participation in conservation for long term sustainability are encouraged. This paper is an attempt to outline the various activities that have been executed under buffer zone management programme of Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation with the internal resources, local communities and support from UNDP, WWF Nepal, CARE Nepal, NTNC and other various partners for the conservation and development of buffer zones in Nepal. Abstract Understanding resource partitioning by predators is important for understanding coexistence patterns, with this becoming more relevant as historical food webs are altered through human impacts. Using scat analysis, we investigated the diet overlap of two sympatric meso-carnviores, the black-backed jackal Canis mesomelas and brown hyaena Hyaena brunnea, in Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, South Africa. Scats (n = 30 jackal, 42 brown hyaena) were collected in April 2012 from game and livestock farms. When comparing main prey categories (medium-large mam- mal, small mammal, fruit, invertebrate, reptile, and bird) we found little difference in diets, with both carnivores con- suming predominantly medium-large mammals (10-100kg). Bushbuck Tragelaphus scriptus was the most commonly consumed large mammal species for both predators. Jackal and brown hyaena had, on average, 1.3 and 1.4 main prey categories per scat respectively which resulted in diet diversities of 3.9 for jackal and 2.5 for brown hyaena.

Well, if you haven't, you may want to go to your local zoo and visit the hyena exhibit. These large African mammals are known for their loud, chattering laugh! The laughing hyena is another name for the largest species of hyena, the spotted hyena. While they look kind of like very large dogs they are actually more closely related to cats. However, they aren't exactly cats either. Instead, they're in a family of their own along with their smaller relatives -- the striped and brown hyenas and the insect-eating aardwolfs. Do laughing hyenas really laugh? Their cry does sound a little like laughing, but you wouldn't confuse their voices for human beings. They also make whooping calls, groans, squeals and many other noises to communicate with one another. In fact, spotted hyenas are among Africa's most vocal animals. Spotted hyenas live in groups called clans. Some clans have over 80 members. Each clan marks out a territory and it defends against other clans. Females, who are slightly larger and more aggressive than males, are in charge of the clans. Females are also great moms. They usually give birth to two cubs, and are very protective. They provide milk to their cubs for over a year. Spotted hyenas play an important role as scavengers. They clean up predator's leftovers and even garbage left by humans. With their strong jaws and teeth they can even crush and digest bones. While they are mainly meat eaters, they occasionally eat plants, too.

Leopards and clouded leopards are threatened by the illegal wildlife trade across their range, how- ever, very little is known of the illegal trade in these two species in Indonesia, or of the efforts made to tackle this crime. Both the Javan Leopard and Sunda Clouded Leopard are protected species in Indonesia and both species are listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), meaning commercial international trade is generally prohibited. To better understand the trade, and efforts to end this trade, we collected records of seizures and prosecutions relating to Javan Leopards and Sunda Clouded Leopards in Indonesia for the period 2011–2019.

Analysis of DNA sequences however, suggests a more recent, Middle Pleistocene shared ancestry of Asian and African leopards. These contrasting patterns led researchers to propose a two-stage hypothesis of leopard dispersal out of Africa: an initial Early Pleistocene colonisation of Asia and a subsequent replacement by a second colonisation wave during the Middle Pleistocene. The status of Late Pleistocene European leopards within this scenario is unclear: were these populations remnants of the first dispersal, or do the last surviving European leopards share more recent ancestry with their African counterparts? Results: In this study, we generate and analyse mitogenome sequences from historical samples that span the entire modern leopard distribution, as well as from Late Pleistocene remains. We find a deep bifurcation between African and Eurasian mitochondrial lineages (~ 710 Ka), with the European ancient samples as sister to all Asian lineages (~ 483 Ka). The modern and historical mainland Asian lineages share a relatively recent common ancestor (~ 122 Ka), and we find one Javan sample nested within these.
