The idea here is great and the novel is sustained by the rich situational comedy of mobsters and Hollywood types collided together. As you would expect the writing is fast-paced snazzy and clever and the comedy high. However I did not like the characters as much as in the previous books (a character called Ronnie appears and disappears like a puff of smoke, a character called Bear seems invented out of desperation, an interesting and essential character called Leo is consigned to oblivion at the drop of a hat), and the early novel seems slow-moving and light on action. It is the inspired juxtaposition of two worlds fascinated by each other which lifts this novel out of the ordinary.   • Elmore Leonard, 1925-2013
    ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

How did you get the idea for the story? I make it up as I go along. I seldom begin writing a novel with a fixed story in mind. I had an interest in the Malaccan Straits pirates, but then shifted to Somalia where the real pirate action was taking place. A focus on terrorism was the next logical step. I then thought, wouldn’t it be interesting to see such a story unfold through the eyes of a documentary filmmaker. As for the wealthy playboy, I always have a guy like that ready to use when I need him. Have you visited Djibouti and did you meet any modern day pirates like those in the book? No on both accounts. But I know Djibouti very well from my research. Your main character, Dara, sympathizes with the Somali pirates. Why? What's your take on contemporary piracy? She sees them initially as what they are or at least were: Somali fisherman battling big foreign interests depleting their fishing waters. Piracy was payback. She also thought they were a fun loving bunch. The young American terrorist Jama is a calculating badass. Would you offer some insight into his character and motivations? He’s a man on a mission to destroy. What’s the mission of any home grown Al Qaeda? To serve Allah or make a name for one’s self. Dara and her companion Xavier speculate on which actors would star in an action feature based on the making of her pirate documentary.

    Raylan by Elmore Leonard Few people get a NY Times obit on the front page. Elmore Leonard did, after a long and distinguished career as a writer. He died on August 20. Some sixty years ago, Leonard began writing Westerns, five of which became movies. Hombre, named by the Western Writers of America one of the best 25 Westerns ever written, became a movie starring Paul Newman. Then Leonard turned to writing crime novels. Many became movies, notably Get Shorty, with John Travolta as the unforgettable Chili Palmer, a Florida loan shark who goes to Hollywood to collect a debt and ends up making a movie. Leonards’s last novel, Raylan, features Raylan Givens, a fascinating figure from two previous novels and from the current FX television series Raylan. Givens, a laconic US marshal operating in Harlan County, Kentucky, is fully equal to the body part snatchers, hillfolk drug dealers, grifters who populate the novel. For me, the addicting qualities of Leonard’s work are his dialogue, his characters, and his imaginative, fully realized settings. The settings are the grittier parts of large cities like Detroit and Miami, Florida, Djibouti, Harlan County. Leonard’s characters are mobsters, low lifers, cops, people on the make. The dialogue is colorful, evocative, memorable, spare. In 1995 British writer Martin Ames described Leonard’s traits as a writer as “gifts—of ear and eye, of timing and phrasing—that even the most indolent and snobbish masters of the mainstream must vigorously covet.” Raylan the novel is among his best and is a fitting close to a wonderful writing career.

    TIMOTHY OLYPHANT “Raylan Givens” With an expansive list of diverse film and television credits, Timothy Olyphant is known for his poignant roles in both dramas and comedies. He most recently wrapped Breck Eisner’s remake of the horror classic The Crazies, which revolves around a small town beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a secret biological weapon into the water supply. Olyphant stars as the town sheriff. Overture Films recently released this film in February 2010. This past year, Timothy starred opposite Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich in David Twohy’s A Perfect Getaway for Relativity Media, which centers around two couples who, on a Hawaiian vacation, discover that psychopaths are stalking and murdering tourists on the islands. He also stars in Gary Yates’ independent feature High Life, a comedy about four hapless junkies who plan to rob a bank. The film premiered at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. In 2007, Olyphant starred in 20th Century Fox’s Hitman and Live Free Die Hard. Hitman, based on the popular video game and directed by Xavier Gans, centers around “Agent 47” (Olyphant), who realizes he’s being pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Eastern Europe. In Live Free Die Hard, directed by Len Wiseman, Olyphant played “Thomas Gabriel,” an internet-based terrorist who John McClaine (Bruce Willis) is trying to stop from systematically shutting down the United States. Olyphant co-starred with Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch in 20th Century Fox’s The Girl Next Door. Olyphant brilliantly portrayed “Kelly,” the porn producer and ex-boyfriend of “Danielle” (Cuthbert), who tries to convince her to come back to the business.

Mexico and the Unites States share a border that is 1,954 miles long. Along this border we find two major languages, namely English and Spanish, and their various dialects representing two nation states and a diverse population; in addition, border economic interdependence promotes transnational flows of a diverse nature.
