CEEOL copyright 2016 A RHINO REMEMBERED On the 500th Anniversary of a Shipwreck István Orosz s there anyone who has not heard of the terrible tempest on the Ligurian Sea which claimed the life of Percy Bysshe Shelley? In almost precisely the Isame place, near the mouth of Spezia Bay off the coast of Porto Venere, another storm had wrecked a vessel three centuries before – O Wild West Wind! The tragedy took place on 25 January 1516, almost exactly five hundred years ago. The most famous victim on board – pace Shelley – was an animal, an Indian rhinoceros to be precise, to whom this essay is dedicated. We will find out shortly what on earth this beast was doing on the boat, tossed about by the raging sea. But let us first have a look at his curriculum vitae and a modest presumption which I hope will explain why I accord such significance to an odd-toed ungulate that found a watery grave, and perhaps even what he might have to do with me or, rather, with my professional interests. The beast probably hailed from Gujarat in Northwest India. Sultan Muzaffar II is on record to have given a gift of the by then fully grown rhino bull he called Ganda to the Portuguese military commander Diego Fernandes de Beja, in commemoration of “establishing mutually beneficial diplomatic contact” – politicalese for the sultan’s polite rejection of Portugal’s overtures aimed at colonisation. Beja received the gift on 18 May 1514, and the animal landed in Goa on 15 September, after the commander, bent on getting rid of this evidence of his failed mission, had dispatched it to Afonso de Albuquerque, Viceroy of the Portuguese territories in India. -

First, it provides a detailed account of the historical sources and the data collection process. Second, it explains the structure of the database and the coding that was used to enter the data. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of the database are discussed and its potential for future research is highlighted. Revised paper accepted 5 August 2008 Summary During the first decades of the sixteenth century, several animals described and viewed as exotic by the Europeans were regularly shipped from India to Lisbon. This paper addresses the relevance of these ‘new’ animals to knowledge and visual representations of the natural world. It discusses their cultural and scientific meaning in Portuguese travel literature of the period as well as printed illustrations, charts and tapestries. This paper suggests that Portugal did not make the most of its unique position in bringing news and animals from Asia. This was either because secrecy associated with trade and military interests hindered the diffusion of illustrations presented in Portuguese travel literature or because the illustrations commissioned by the nobility were represented on expensive media such as parchments and tapestries and remained treasured possessions. However, the essay also proposes that the Portuguese contributed to a new sense of the experience and meaning of nature and that they were crucial mediators in access to new knowledge and new ways of representing the natural world during this period. When Copenhagen Copenhagen Zoo, Zoo was founded in 1859, its purpose was divided equally between entertainment, perceptions of nature, enlightenment and symbolizing the glory of the Danish capital. During this period animal protection though, it also became possible for the zoo to stage itself as a kinder place for animals than “real” nature. In the early 20th century, the zoo attracted attention from animal rights movements, wherefore the debates came to be structured around two radically different perceptions of nature. The article takes its outset in the arguments formulated by the three successive directors: Julius Schiøtt, Waldemar Dreyer and Theodor Alving. Tivoli Gardens The Tivoli Gardens at Denmark Tivoli Gardens is the most-visited theme park in Scandinavia, and the second-oldest operating amusement park. The amusement park features beautiful scenery, a lake and flower gardens. It originally had rides like a merry-go-round and a scenic railway. Today, the garden owns some of the best rides such as the wooden roller coaster (Rutschebanen), and Daemonen (the Demon). Tivoli Gardens is also home to the world’s tallest carousel, the Star Flyer. A list of the rides at the park in the order of their opening: 1926 - Bumper Cars 1937 - Galley Ships roundabout boats 1943 - The Ferris Wheel 1988 - Snurretoppen (breakdance spinner) 1988 - Spinning Top (spinner ride) 1993 - The Flying Trunk (renovated in 2010) 1995 - The Dragon (giant swing) 1999 - The Golden Tower (drop tower) 2001 - The Monsoon (a magic carpet ride) 2003 - The Mine (dark ride in a boat featuring 2m drop) 2009 - Vertigo giant swing For kids the park has the Big Clock, Dragon Boats, Dyrekarussellen, the Fun House, the Light House, the Little Pilot, Nautilus, Petzi's World, the Panda, Rasmus Klump, the Temple Tower, Trolley Bus and Vintage Cars. Other attractions at Tivoli Gardens include the pantomime theater, an open-air theater for performances in the commedia dell’arte style, as well as ballet and modern dance. Live music is featured during the summer months. Laser and water shows over the lake are held during the evenings. In 2013, Tivoli has expanded to create a new astronomy themed area named 'The Cheerful Corner'. This place features three rides inspired by the 16th century Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and are designed for all ages. -
