This service gives us an opportunity to celebrate those whose generosity in the past has enriched the lives of Durham’s great institutions today and to look forward to a future that is full of opportunity. On 27 January 1914, the then Dean, Herbert Hensley Henson, revived the Commemoration of Founders and Benefactors. It had been written into the Cathedral Statutes of 1554 but for whatever reason had not been observed for centuries. -

This is my first opportunity to introduce myself to you in writing as the Vice-Chancellor and Warden and it is fitting that I am doing so in an issue of the magazine that marks the 150th anniversary of the creation of the University’s first alumni society. Alumni are the guardians of the University and our primary community of affection. In the end, everything I and my colleagues do here needs to be judged from the perspective of alumni, by those who have a long-term investment and concern for the success and reputation of the University. Our horizon should be the next 20, or even 30, years. My aim is that the current generation of students should be just as proud to have Durham on their CV when they are 40 or 50 as they are now. My aim is for you to be even more proud of your connection to the University than you were at the time of your graduation. This then is the goal for alumni relations during my tenure, and in my first year I will be bringing 9 20 forward some ambitious plans for transforming Durham. - 
												
												The Fifth Report of Senior Pay and Perks at UK Universities
Transparency at the top? The fifth report of senior pay and perks in UK universities History This is the fifth report on pay and perks at the top of British higher education institutions (HEIs) to be published by the University and College Union (UCU). It forms part of the union’s ongoing campaign for greater transparency in higher education, including the rationale behind senior pay rises. UCU submitted a Freedom of Information (FoI) request to 158 HEIs in November 2018. This followed similar requests submitted in 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014. All requests were designed to shine a light on the arbitrary nature of senior pay and perks in universities, and support the union’s call for reform. The basis for this report The FoI request that forms the basis of this report was sent to 158 HEIs. It requested details of vice-chancellors’ (or head of institution if known by a different title) salaries and those of other senior post-holders earning over £100,000 at the institution during the academic year of 2017/18 (1 August 2017 to 31 July 2018). It also asked for details spending on flights and hotels, and if the vice- chancellor was provided with accommodation by the university. Finally, we requested to know whether or not the vice-chancellor was a member of the remuneration committee, if they could attend even if not a member and requested a copy of the most recently ratified minutes of the institution’s remuneration committee. Variety of responses The questions on salary, expenditure on flights, hotels and accommodation for vice-chancellors elicited a huge variation in responses with many institutions deploying exemptions under the Freedom of Information Act to avoid providing data. -

Very glad you are staying on.” Jeremy Vine, 7 June 2016 4 The Master’s Letter This is very much the year of “last”, so here goes with my last letter for the Record. Writing in March, it all still seems a bit unreal but July is rapidly approaching and the removal men have been booked, so it is now just a matter of time. Life seems increasingly hectic and next term is full of celebration events and nice surprises, so it should be a lot of fun. Frankly, there has not been much time to ponder the future, but I have managed to arrange four books to write or edit (or is it five?), so I’ll be kept busy once we leave Durham! It has indeed been a hectic year. When I wrote last year, I could not have foreseen that the Vice-Chancellor would ask me to become Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor Colleges and Student Experience for Michaelmas Term, whilst we waited for Owen Adams to disengage himself from the Army and move to Durham. -

Along with Professor Susan Hart, the current lead for DUBS which will become the Faculty of Business on 1 August, the new Executive Deans will be key academic leaders for their respective Faculties and integral members of the Executive. They will have responsibility for the strategic development and financial performance of their Faculty and play an important ambassadorial role for their Faculty and the University as a whole. Following an extensive external search and recruitment process, we have appointed the following outstanding candidates: · Professor Charlotte Clarke – Executive Dean (Social Sciences & Health) Charlotte is currently Professor of Health in Social Science at the University of Edinburgh, where she was previously Head of School and now also holds the post of Dean International for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Through her research she has worked to address health inequalities and stigma and has influenced international health and social care policy and practice in relation to dementia. Charlotte will be starting as Executive Dean (Social Sciences & Health) on 16 September 2019. · Professor Jacqui Ramagge – Executive Dean (Science) Jacqui is currently Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney. She has won awards for her teaching and for her contributions to the research environment. -

												Mastering Space: Hegemony, Territory and International Political Economy/John Agnew and Stuart Corbridge
MASTERING SPACE For over two hundred years the domination of some countries by others has been intrinsic to international relations, with national economic and political strength viewed as essential to a nation’s survival and global position. Mastering Space identifies the essential features of this ‘state-centredness’ and suggests an optimistic alternative more in keeping with the contemporary post-Cold War climate. Drawing on recent geopolitical thinking, the authors claim that the dynamism of the international political economy has been obscured through excessive attention to the state as an unchanging actor. Dealing with such topical issues as Japan’s rise to economic dominance and America’s perceived decline, as well as the global impact of continued geographical change, the book discusses the role of geographical organization in the global political economy, and the impact of increasing economic globalization and political fragmentation in future international relations. The authors identify the present time as crucial to the global political economy, and explore the possibilities of moving the world from mastering space to real reciprocity between peoples and places. John Agnew is a Professor of Geography at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University. Stuart Corbridge is a Lecturer in Geography at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College.
