Reminiscences of a former Master Cutler (1851-1947) Introduction by Pauline Bell. In August and September 1933 James Dixon wrote five long articles that were published in the Sheffield Telegraph. These are only accessible on microfilm which when photocopied produces a copy of very indifferent quality. The smaller the print in the photocopy, the clearer it is but then the print is so tiny it is difficult to read without a magnifying glass! I am not a skilled typist but felt these articles were extremely important not only in relation to Mr. Dixon’s life but to the social, local and national history of the period of his life span. Can you imagine middle class parents allowing their primary school-age children to take a picnic and go out for the day on foot walking some 3 miles or so (Fulwood to Beauchief in Sheffield)? In addition, I think it gives quite an insight into travel both business and leisure at a time when it was by sea and by horse drawn vehicles and some train as this means of transport became available. I have used a voice recognition programme to type these which works well for normal vocabulary but not for foreign place names. I have tried to ensure these are correct with the help of ‘google’ but I suspect there may still be some errors. As far as possible what follows is in his own words though sometimes I was reduced to guessing the occasional word or phrase and hope that I have at least conveyed his meaning as he intended. -

Apart from a few dozen houses across the River Dun at Bridgehouses and in the Wicker, and a similar number at Parkhill, the whole of the built-up area was within a 600 yard radius centred on the Old Church.1 Within that brief radius the most northerly development was that at Bower Lane (Gibraltar), and only a limited incursion had been made hitherto into Colson Crofts (the fields between West Bar and the river). On the western and north-western edges there had been development along Hollis Croft and White Croft, and to a lesser degree along Pea Croft and Lambert Knoll (Scotland). To the south-west the building on the western side of Coalpit Lane was over the boundary in Ecclesall, but still a recognisable part of the town.2 To the south the gardens and any buildings were largely confined by the Park wall which kept Alsop Fields free of dwellings except for the ingress along the northern part of Pond Lane. The Rivers Dun and Sheaf formed a natural barrier on the east and north-east, and the low-lying Ponds area to the south-east was not ideal for house construction. -

It was, however, far inland, off the main highway network and twenty miles from the nearest navigation. One might say that with those disadvantages its future looked distinctly unpromising. A century later, Sheffield was a maker of plated goods and silverware of international repute, was en route to world supremacy in steel, and had already become the world's greatest producer of cutlery and edge tools. How did it happen? Internal economies of scale vastly outweighed deficiencies. Skills, innovations and discoveries, entrepreneurs, investment, key local resources (water power, coal, wood and iron), and a rapidly growing labour force swelled largely by immigrants from the region were paramount. Each of these, together with external credit, improved transport and ever-widening markets, played a significant part in the town's metamorphosis. Economic and population growth were accompanied by a series of urban developments which first pushed outward the existing boundaries. Considerable infill of gardens and orchards followed, with further peripheral expansion overspilling into adjacent townships. New industrial, commercial and civic building, most of it within the central area, reinforced this second phase. A period of retrenchment coincided with the French and Napoleonic wars, before a renewed surge of construction restored the impetus. -

Here is the photo we promised of Admiral Graham " Rumble" Raimious and his "orifsers" .Not the hunt for the red October but the hunt for the Cold December, and boy did we find it!! Another couple of captions could be ”LDMBC members show allegiance to the crown " or "have you ever been a member of the communist party? - Niet !! " All fun and games though. The lake is fully open to sail on now, but as the landing stage is damaged, we cannot use that bit!!! Luton council are handling the insurance claim for us though! The coming year we have a few local shows, so we hope the get support from a lot of members at these. We also have The Mayhem Weekend 23-24 May. I have decided to go smaller this year, we will only take a 3m x 3m gazebo, as only I and Dave Seth will be staying over. Please feel free to come along on the Saturday and Sunday, bring a boat have a sail and a cuppa. We have been invited to attend Hitchin Market on Saturdays throughout the year, please keep an eye open for the dates, some are more important than others, so the committee will let you know. Also as it’s a Saturday in most cases, bring the other half and let them go shopping in the market for a couple of hours! The last few months have been quiet down the lake, so to kick start the season, I propose to hold a “BACON ROLL SUNDAY” bring some rolls and bacon and I’ll cook them for you! I’ll let you know the date. -

Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society 130 (2012), 241–277 Politics in Bristol, 1865–86 By RICHARD WOODBERRY Whilst Bristol’s status as a port, its economic history and reasons for decline have been meticulously and widely studied for the mid to late Victorian period, its politics have been sadly ignored. The perception that the city’s great days had gone, that Liverpool hugely surpassed it as a port, Manchester was an alternative capital city, Birmingham had evolved as the hub of a great industrial hinterland and Leeds as a dynamic regional centre, all contributed to the historical neglect. No major national political figure emerged from Bristol in the period. For the Liberals the party leadership was either in the north, or in the House of Lords, or when in Birmingham was by- passed; for the Conservatives the centre of gravity remained in the counties in general, though not necessarily the southern ones, or Lancashire in particular, and London, where urban Toryism of a reform, if not a democratic, nature, grew.1 Disraeli’s famous Act of 1867 had a major effect on the structure of Bristol’s politics, almost doubling the electorate, modernising the parties, opening up new techniques of seeking political favours and broadening the nature of debate and discourse. Nevertheless, it did not alter the outcome of the city’s election results, which had been, and continued to be, Liberal. Apart from one fleeting by-election victory in April 1868 (overturned in Nov.), no Conservative was returned for Bristol from 1852–85.2 In terms of the size of its population by the 1860s Bristol had fallen from second place (as achieved in the previous century) to tenth due to industry sweeping production and people northwards.3 The comparative figures for both population and size of electorate are detailed below: 1. -

The chapel was ablaze with masses of flowers, and sweet with the scents of harvest. From the pulpit one had an incomparable view. The land fell away into the wooded valley; beyond were the purple moors and rolling hills. Somehow inside and outside were one and indivisible. It is a memory I shall never forget. That day the little church was full. On another occasion I conducted a service, with sermon and Holy Communion, complete with gleaming chalices, and then we all got into my car—a four-seater— preacher, organist, and congregation, and went home. -

The Shadow Cabinet in Westminster Systems Modeling Opposition Agenda Setting in the House of Commons, 1832{1915∗ Andrew C. Eggersy Arthur Spirlingz Abstract We consider the emergence of an informal institution vital to the functioning of West- minster polities: that the shadow cabinet is a `government-in-waiting'. We compare the evidence for two theoretical accounts of its timing: a `procedural' theory wherein the shadow cabinet is a solution to internal organizational issues in the House of Commons prior to widespread working class voting, and a `competition' theory that predicts that suffrage extension acts as a key stimulus for shadow cabinet organization. Gathering a dataset of almost a million utterances in parliament between the First and Fourth Reform Acts, we provide a novel method for identifying shadow cabinet members using the surges in term use from their speeches. We argue that the `competition' hypothesis is the most plausible version of events and that the opposition responded to the new `party orientated electorate' by strategically re-organizing in a way that mimicked the cabinet's structure. ∗First version: January 2014. May/June 2020 Magazine of The Church on the High Street Stay Home This edition of our magazine is quite different to the usual. Normally we include information about forthcoming services, events etc. But as we all know these are unprecedented times and our daily lives are very different and this magazine reflects that. We don’t know when our church building will be open again but we do know that our doors will be flung open sometime in the future to welcome the people of Dore back in. In the meantime we are ‘gathering’ in different ways and this special edition is another way for us to keep in touch. Take care everyone. 2 Jottings from the Manse: When I was young my grandmother was always cautious about me running around in shorts and t-shirts in the merry month of May, “Nair cast a clout till May is out” she would say. Meaning keep your vest and winter clothes on till June 1st. (Even if we were having a heat wave and the temperatures had reached over 70 degrees!) However I also remember my mother taking her to task over the saying. She had an alternative meaning and said it was about not throwing off your winter woollies till the blossom of the May tree was out, which of course happened from the end of April onward. Hooray I didn’t have to boil in a sweater! Despite the lockdown we have enjoyed some lovely weather in April and I for one really hope this continues. If you are able to manage a daily walk, the blossom on the trees which line many of the roads in this area certainly have been a delight to see as they burst into life. -

Ships and Boats: 1840-1950 Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. This overview looks at ships and boats built after 1840. Principally drawing on archaeological, technological and historical sources, it describes vessels used on English inland and coastal waters and in the open sea. The evidence of wrecks and abandoned vessels is drawn on, as well as extant vessels. Also included is the early development of submarines. This guidance note has been written by Mark Dunkley and edited by Paul Stamper. The legislation was based on a select committee report recommending that measures “already adopted voluntarily by the majority of shipowners, should be made compulsory by legislative enactment.”2 Is it credible that he wanted no more than what responsible shipowners were already doing?
