July/August 2004 Page 5 Turf Talk Bunkers: Hazards OR Havens USGA Greens Section, April 2004 In his famous book The Spirit of St. Andrews, Alister Mackenzie stated, “Many poor golf courses are made in an endeavor to eliminate the element of luck.” Uniform, ultra-firm conditions in every , in effect, remove an element of luck from the game. This is not meant to imply that bunkers should never be raked or that every stray shot into a bunker should result in the same as a shot into a water hazard. However, the delicate equilibrium between a penalty and the ability to recover from an errant shot has been upset when anything but a perfect lie in the sand is deemed unacceptable. It is better to accept a good lie in a bunker as good luck and a difficult lie as bad luck than to debate what is fair and unfair on an area of the course that was designed to be avoided in the first place. Broken Sound’s golf maintenance bunker program dedicates three employees each day to each course. They complete the bunker preparation around 10:00 A.M. We try to maintain the bunker faces at an average depth of one inch of sand. This is the depth that we find the ball will not plug and typically roll back to the center of the bunker. We do not create lines in the sand on the faces with rakes, because this disrupts the packing of the sand, making it softer and allowing more risk of plugging. The USGA rules state that a bunker should be well defined as to where a hazard begins and ends. The staff creates a defined edge mechanically by establishing a lip. The bottoms of the traps have between four and six inches of sand, and the trap-raking equipment has been modified to have brooms attached to try and make the bottoms of the bunkers as uniform as possible and to create a (Left) L-R: Don & Nanci Tuck, firmness to the bottoms. We must remember that all the and Dick & Sheila Asher work the staff does to the bunkers to make them consistent can still be altered simply by the weather. Prolonged hot, dry conditions can make the bunkers powdery and soft. Rainy weather can move sand, changing depths, and making sand sticky and firm. Enjoy the courses and stay out of those bunkers!
