Byzantine Philosophy Revisited (a decade after) KATERINA IERODIAKONOU It is exactly ten years ago that the volume Byzantine Philosophy and its Ancient Sources was published (Ierodiakonou 2002). In the introduction to that volume my aim was to give a short guide to the basics of Byzantine philosophy, and at the same time a partial list of the unsettled questions concerning its dates, sources, and character. No definitive answers were given then; in fact it was argued that no definitive answers could be given, since more scholarly research needed to be done in this neglected area of the history of philosophy. A decade after, do we have answers to those ques- tions? Is it time to reassess our somewhat dated, though still prevailing, standard views on the fundamental issues of Byzantine philosophy? During the last decade there has been increasing interest in Byzantine philosophy, which has resulted in the appearance of critical editions of Byzantine philosophical texts, systematic studies of specific topics in Byzantine philosophy, as well as general surveys of the discipline as a whole. It is also indicative that the recent volumes and websites of the Cambridge History of Late Antique Philosophy, the Cambridge History of Medieval Philosophy, the Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Studies, the Oxford Handbook of Medieval Philosophy, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the Geschichte der Philosophie (Bd. 5, C. H. Beck), the Ency- clopédie philosophique universelle, the Dictionnaire des philosophes antiques and others have included entries on Byzantine philosophy and on the more illustrious Byzantine thinkers. But does the implicit acknowledg- ment that among the periods of the history of philosophy a place should also be reserved for the study of Byzantine thought imply that we are now in a position to draw a more accurate map of this formerly ignored field? It rather seems that, although some of the issues previously raised have been adequately scrutinized, many remain undecided or controversial. -

In the Latin West, for example, translations produced in the long twelfth century (from the late eleventh to the early thirteenth centuries) marked a major shift in medicine’s development into a learned profession and also reshaped understandings of the human body. This dissertation explores both the cross-cultural circulation of medicine in the medieval Mediterranean and its place in Byzantium and the Latin West. First, it examines medicine in eleventh- and twelfth-century Byzantium, both because of its considerable vitality and because Byzantium’s broad influence and prestige make it an essential context for the Latin West. Rather than characterized by newly ascendant medical practitioners, as has been suggested, a divide appears to have existed between the enthusiasm for Brian Long medicine among learned readers and the humbler, often empirical world of Byzantine medical practitioners. Second, the translations of Constantine the African are examined, including both the contexts of their production and their connections to the other worlds of Mediterranean medicine. -

Copyrighted Material introduction � His importance two remarkable literary renaissances occurred roughly in the first half of the twentieth century at the two edges of europe: ireland and Greece. ireland, with a population then of fewer than four million, produced Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, Wilde, and Shaw; Greece, with a population then of fewer than eleven million (compare ohio, with just over eleven million), produced cavafy, Palamas, Seferis, elytis, Kazantzakis, and ritsos, plus a dozen other remarkable writers of both poetry and prose. our focus in this volume is on Kazantzakis; yet it is important to remember that he was part of a generalized literary revival and also of a culture in which just about everybody, it seems, writes a slender book of poetry that is privately published and distributed to friends. Kazantzakis’s one indisputable uniqueness is his success in becoming known outside of Greece via translation, not to mention having three inter- esting movies (Celui qui doit mourir, Zorba the Greek, and The Last Tempta- tion of Christ) made from his work. of course, cavafy is widely appreciated and perhaps a dozen others have been translated, but no other Greek author has attained Kazantzakis’s worldwide range. in addition, Kazantzakis was more peripatetic than the others, who stayed mostly in Greece (or in Alexandria in cavafy’s case), whereas Kazantzakis lived in France during his final decade, attempted previously to establish a career in the Soviet union, Germany, and Spain, traveled repeatedly to Asia and the Near east, resided for extended periods in czechoslovakia and italy, vacationed in Switzerland, and corre- sponded not only in Greek but also in French, Spanish, German, italian, and even a little in english. -
