He is currently a member of the Canadian House of Commons representing the suburban Ottawa riding of Carleton. First elected in 2004, Poilievre was re-elected in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015. Poilievre received the second highest vote total of any candidate in the 2008 election. Poilievre was born in Calgary, Alberta, the son of schoolteachers. Poilievre is Franco-Albertan in origin. He studied international relations at the University of Calgary, following a period of study in commerce at the same institution. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calgary. Poilievre has done policy work for Canadian Alliance MPs Stockwell Day and Jason Kenney, and prior to running for office himself; worked as a full-time assistant to Day. He also worked for Magna International, focusing on communications, and has done public relations work. Agathon Fric* Popping the Question: What the Questionnaire for Federal Judicial Appointments Reveals about the Pursuit of Justice, Diversity, and the Commitment to Transparency Since 2017, the Canadian government has published excerpts from questionnaires that prospective judges completed as part of the judicial selection process, subjecting newly appointed superior and federal court judges to a degree of scrutiny that is unprecedented in Canadian history. Using this novel source material, this article explores what a sample of 16 judges’ questionnaires do and do not say about the individuals behind the robes. This review suggests that those appointed to the bench in 2017 generally demonstrate insight into the judicial role in Canada.

    Joint statement calling for sanctioning of Chinese and Hong Kong officials and protection for Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Canada to take action in light of the mass arrests and assault on civil rights following the unilateral imposition of the new National Security Law in Hong Kong. Many in Hong Kong fear they will face the same fate as the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, defenders’ lawyers, and millions of interned Uyghurs, Tibetans, and faith groups whose rights of free expression and worship are denied. We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution under the National Security Law, including international students and expatriate workers who have been involved in protest actions in Canada. Furthermore, Canada must invoke the Sergei Magnitsky Law to sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who instituted the National Security Law, as well as other acts violating human rights; and to ban them and their immediate family members from Canada and freeze their Canadian assets. Canada needs to work closely with international allies with shared values to institute a strong policy toward China. It is time for Canada to take meaningful action to show leadership on the world stage.     Be in the Know with OBIO… New Federal Health Minister: Cabinet Shuffle Recap By: Grant Burns, Public Affairs and Communications Manager As part of a federal cabinet shuffle announced on Monday, August 28, Canada’s Minister of Health is now Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Member of Parliament from the riding of Moncton—Riverview—Dieppe in New Brunswick. In total, six MPs had their portfolios changed, addressing two issues for the federal government: 1. The Ministry of Indigenous & Northern Affairs was split in two: the previous Minister of Health, Jane Philpott, will now take over the new Ministry of Indigenous Services and Carolyn Bennett will remain responsible for the Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs. To replace Minister Philpott at Health, it is noteworthy that Ginette Petitpas Taylor was promoted from outside cabinet, where she had been serving as Parliamentary Secretary to Minster of Finance. 2. To fill the vacancy in the Ministry of Public Services & Procurement caused by Min Judy Foote stepping down last week, Carla Qualtrough was promoted from the Ministry of Sport & Persons with Disabilities. To replace her, Kent Hehr was moved out of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and he was replaced by Seamus O’Regan, who had been the Associate Minister, National Defence.
