Volume 28, No. 3 November 1991 HOTLINE: 703-281-2228 miuj of Greater Washington JOHN ROBERTS FRIDAY AND NOVEMBER 22 TONY BARRAND 8:30 PM Robust harmony singers and FSGW favorites John Roberts and Tony Barrand return for a rare appearance as a duo on Friday, November 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring. The irrepressible John and Tony are equally at home with pub songs, sea shanties, or songs of magic and ritual from medieval English tradition. Their scholarship in these musical forms is matched by their musicianship and talent. Both are accomplished with many instruments and quite at home with a broad variety of styles. The 8:30 pm concert will feature ballads and songs of the sea, of rural pursuits, of social and sociable situations, of industrial toil and strife, and much more, typically arranged in a thematic fashion. The songs are punctuated by tales, jokes, monologues, dances and tunes, giving a more complete appreciation of the breadth, diversity and vitality of the English folk tradition. Since 1974, John and Tony have traveled as part of the troupe performing Nowell Sing We Clear, presenting holiday music from the British and American tradition. They appear as a duo less frequently, and it has been a few years since their last FSGW program. Don’t miss this chance to hear this evening of traditional and home-spun music and song! Mikkelson 1 Copyrighted by Sarah Elizabeth Korneisel Jaegers 2019 2 Abstract While American and western European works make up the majority of the classical clarinet repertoire known and studied in the West, works of Turkish origin are the focus of this document. Though over 100 pieces of Turkish classical clarinet repertoire exist, they are widely unknown to Western musicians, uncatalogued, and seldom performed. Consequently, although the clarinet is a staple of Turkish music and is extremely popular in the country’s folk tradition, classical clarinet music by Turkish composers remains difficult for Western musicians to find and acquire. The history of Anatolia as a cultural melting pot resulted in diverse and unique classical and folk musical traditions, both based on the makam modal system. Unlike the Western tradition, which developed twelve-tone equal temperament, the octave in the Turkish modal system comprises twenty-four unequally-spaced tones. The clarinet was introduced to Turkey by Giuseppe Donizetti (1788–1856), who traveled to Turkey at the behest of the sultanate to found European-style bands. Particularly appreciated was the clarinette d’amour, pitched in G. -

During the trip to Iraq, my apprehensions about traveling in an active war-zone were matched by my excitement at seeing the impact group drumming had in reducing conflict and promoting dialogue. Through drumming, my three- person team was successful in bringing Kurds, Arabs, Christians, and Yazidis together. It was amazing that something as simple as a drum could have such far-reaching, life-changing results. In October 2008 we were able to return to Iraq with Dr. Craig Woodson, author of Roots of Rhythm and noted ethnomusicologist. Dr. Woodson’s addition to the project allowed us to include a new, worldwide perspective and hands-on drum making, both of which empowered the participants while providing the benefit of having many more instruments available at relatively little cost. One of the drums we discovered in Iraq, the daf, is a frame drum that has been used throughout the region for centuries in religious practices and performances. -

BIOGRAPHY Dequenvessendo is a Galician music group born in 2016 within the Cultural Association Triskell de Armentón (Arteixo), inspired by the idea of forming a project based on traditional music quartets. In the beginning, it was formed by Bieito Romero Diéguez, Miguel Ocampo Bermúdez and the brothers Miguel and Pablo Rosales Reboiras. Little by little, they begin to introduce themselves in the folk music, inspired by the way of making music of groups like Luar na Lubre, Milladoiro, Silly Wizard or The Tannahil Weavers, clearly framed in the Atlantic Celtic folk. During this time the group participated in numerous prestigious “foliadas”,such as the Cantos de Taberna of Folgoso do Courel or the Foliada de A Fonsagrada. They were invited, in 2017, to play at the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of the XXX Anniversary of Luar Na Lubre; in a concert-conference held at the headquarters of the Paideia Foundation in A Coruña; at the II Festival Lágrimas de San Lorenzo, in Pumarín (Balboa), at Fiestas de Bardaos (San Sadurniño); as well as in the 34th edition of the Carballeira de Zas Festival; among others... The first concert the band did outside of Galicia was at Noche de San Juan of 2017 in Cubillos del Sil (El Bierzo). In this performance, they understand the need to incorporate more instrumentalists to enrich the musicality of the group. Besides, during I Romería de Sisalde (Arteixo), a few months later, the guitarist Natahel Regueiro joined the group. During 2018, in a concert at Jardines de Méndez Núñez (A Coruña), the band obtained its current formation, with the incorporation of Irene Cerqueiro as vocalist and instrumentalist. -

So how did you get started? RD There’s been music in my family for as long as I can remember. I learnt the tin whistle when I was six and then after a year my father bought me my first set of pipes. But it was an uncle who gave me lessons. IS I was five when I started. I learnt by ear from my father, imitating him like it’s always been done. When I was ten he started putting me in for competitions. Interviewer Who have been your musical influences? IS Well, Milladoiro, who started it all, and Carlos Nuñez who really put Galician music on the map. But my greatest inspiration has got to be players like Susana Seivane and Cristina Pato for showing that women can be out there just as much as the men. -

She was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1976 in a family of well-known Galician pipers and musi- cians, the Seivane family. She started her musi- cal career at the age of three and when she was 9, she moved to Cambre (A Coruña) with her family and soon she gained respect and admira- tion of all the professional pipers and all those people connected with traditional Galician mu- sic. She has created her own style, synthesized with the style of pipers from the past. She is ac- companied by a very young group of musicians, who offer innovation and originality to her per- formance.
