  • Celebrate the Queen's Jubilee with a Nice Pint of British Beer in A
Celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee with a nice pint of British Beer in a traditional British pub! INSIDE BEER MATTERS THIS ISSUE... A Sheffield pub crawl with a difference Steel City Brewers’ Spanish hop Pub of the Month: The York, Broomhill and all your local pub, brewery and beer festival news. 2 Dave Wickett: 1949 - 2012 It is with deepest regret to announce that Dave Wickett, owner of the Fat Cat & Kelham Island Brewery passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 16th May 2012 after a long battle against illness. Dave’s passion for real ale was the reason The Fat Cat started and helped to make Sheffield the real ale capital that it is today. Dave will be sadly missed by all at The Fat Cat and Kelham Island Brewery. Sheffield CAMRA offers our condolences to the family Dave leaves behind, the sad loss of Dave sees him leave quite a legacy as pretty much the founder of the current booming real ale scene. We’ll have more about Dave’s achievements in the next issue of Beer Matters. Steel City Brewing - www.steelcitybrewing.co.uk Steel City originally didn’t intend to partake in CAMRA’s Mild Month, but when they decided to get in on the act, they were unsurprisingly not going for half measures - and so their mild has no bitterness at all! After brewing the ultra-bitter 666IBUDCLXVI in Brizzle with Arbor, the return leg saw Jon travel to Sheffield to brew a 0IBU red mild. Using a sack each of melanoidin and carared to get a deep red colour, the brew was then boiled for a minimal time, with no bittering hops - although there is a twist in the form of shed loads of hops after flame-off! The beer is also Steel City’s contribution to the jubilee ‘celebrations’, and given its red colour and Dave & Gazza’s views on royalty, Bolshevik Solution seemed the perfect name.

  • Menhir Spanish Tapas
WELCOME TO MENHIR SPANISH TAPAS A Menhir is a large upright standing stone originate from many diferent periods across pre-history, and were erected as part of a larger Megalithic culture that flourished in the North of Spain, Europe and beyond. Their size can vary considerably; but their shape is generally uneven and squared, often tapering towards the top. The function of Menhirs is not certain. Over the centuries there were thoughts that had been used by Druids for human sacrifice, used as territorial markers, elements of a complex ideological system, functioned as early calendars or as an gift to the Sun. To me a Menhir and its beauty cannot be anything else than a gift to the Gods, to the Sun and to all of us. EATING & ORDERING TAPAS ITS ALL ABOUT SHARING!! Some authors say that the tapa was born when, due to an illness, the Spanish King Alfonso X, the Wise, had to take small bites of food with some wine between meals. Once recovered from the disease, the wise king decreed that no wine was to be served in any of the inns in the land of Castille , unless accompanied by something to eat. Since then tapas have been present in all homes, restaurants, bar & cafes around Spain. The favorite drink to go with tapas is wine thus the popular spanish drink of Sangria which is cold, fruitier & more refreshing. In the northwest of Spain were apples are more abundant cider replaces wine. Tapa means "lid" or "cover" in spanish. In the early days of tapas, a slice of bread with cheese or ham was given with your drink and placed over your drink to keep out the flies.
