But anything about hip-hop wouldn’t be complete without shout-outs, right? So, in true fashion, I would like to thank God because without Him none of this would be possible. From getting this started for my master’s thesis to finishing this dissertation, it was just as much of a commitment for my chair, Dr. Sarah Becker, as it was for me. She had no idea when she agreed to chair my research, that I would decide to move half way across the world to the Middle East my last year. No matter how distracted I become with other interest and activities, she still supported me as I worked at my own pace. Dr. Lori Martin and Dr. Bryan McCann were also along for the ride from masters to doctorate, and devotedly provided constructive feedback and advice whenever I needed it. Once Dr. Susan Weinstein agreed to join the bunch as a dean’s rep, the dynamic of the committee helped ease the stress of defenses and oral exams as they gradually morphed into engaging discussions of hip-hop, culture, community, and race (let’s hope I can still say the same after this last one). Of course, there would not be a study without the artists who willingly responded to possibly obscure flyers for research participants, and those who agreed based on recommendations from friends. I probably wouldn’t have had the courage to pick up the flyer and call, so the fact they were willing to meet, talk to, and be recorded by a totally random stranger and ask for nothing in return is deeply appreciated. For the few that I knew personally, even though they were kinda obligated to participate, I still appreciate them lending their voices. To my PhD sister-friends, Melinda, Dari, and Tiffani. You guys encouraged me sooooooo much. Just having someone there to do academia with made a world of a difference! Moving to a completely new place that I had no prior connections to and being able to find not one, but THREE amazing women who would push and encouraged me throughout the process was invaluable. I learned something different from each you, and I honestly can’t imagine going through this without y’all. And my homie Tim – my G! Bruh, I can’t tell you how much you motivate me. Anytime we talk, he pushes and encourages me to keep going. I have had so many conversation with him where at the end I walk away feel like a million bucks. Just watching him grow and follow his dreams over the years seriously encourages me to find my passion and chase after it with all I have. During this time I also had the honor of finding my own poet laureate. Clem, he is someone who motivated me and encouraged me to be the best me I could be. Watching him find his groove and thrive in it really makes me want to do the same. And when I would have breakdowns, that I didn’t know were breakdowns, and times when I was stressed, and didn’t know I was stressed, he did everything he could to pick me back up and help me get back on track. Your energy was felt from miles away. Then I had the brilliant idea that moving 8025.41 miles away from my department, friends, family, and anything that remotely resembled home, would help me focus on getting this dissertation finished. I was in for a rude awakening. Yes, I would be further away from distractions, but for every distraction I left in the States I found two more in the UAE. In addition, I would then loose the ease of access to my professor and committee that I benefited from while on campus. But then one eventful Thursday night I went to a Game Night, and I am so grateful I did. I met Rod who would be there to cheer me on every step of the way until I reached my goal of finishing. When I needed a welcoming distraction, he was there, and when I needed someone to remind me to get it done, he was there, and he never let me forget to “enjoy the process”. Rod and my other globe-trotting scholars Bianca and Tierra helped me to balance work, dissertation, living abroad, and to live my best life while doing it. Lastly, my family, the ones who have been on this long education journey with me. I’m sure they have given more than I know so I could accomplish the things I have and to pursue my many interests. Support means nothing when trying to describe their role and contribution in my life. And my 908 girls, Imani and Raine, I think you’ve put up with me long enough to be considered family (we’ve stood at an alter together so I think that makes it official). Imani, I’m sure I have racked up a nice bill through your editing services and counseling session, and Raine, your positivity and radiance always seem to find me on the most needed days. There are also a multitude of others who have helped push me along the way. As 3 Stakes said, “No man is an island, peninsula maybe.” So, to all of you who collectively reached out a hand and grabbed hold of the Island of Castel to ensure that I didn’t drift away at sea, I thank you. I appreciate you, I value you, I admire you, I cherish you, and I celebrate you.
