Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, an environment for world-class artistic presentation in the Hudson Valley, was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2003. Risk-taking performances and provocative programs take place in the 800-seat Sosnoff Theater, a proscenium-arch space; and in the 220-seat Theater Two, which features a flexible seating configuration. The Center is home to Bard College’s Theater and Dance Programs, and host to two annual summer festivals: SummerScape, which offers opera, dance, theater, operetta, film, and cabaret; and the Bard Music Festival, which celebrates its 22nd year in August, with “Sibelius and His World.” The Center bears the name of the late Richard B. Fisher, the former chair of Bard College’s Board of Trustees. This magnificent building is a tribute to his vision and leadership. PREMIERE OF »LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST« On Saturday, September 29, at 7:00 pm, the curtain will rise on the 2018/19 season’s first premiere: Cusch Jung directs Giacomo Puccini’s La fanciulla del West (The Girl from the Golden West) for the Oper Leipzig. Prof. Ulf Schirmer, Intendant and General Music Director, conducts the Gewandhaus. Puccini set this, his seventh opera, in a gold mining camp in the Wild West. Loneliness and isolation define the miners’ raw, masculine existence, ruled as it is by a clearly defined pecking order. Here, far from home and hearth, the men’s search for gold becomes a search for true meaning in life. Surrounded by the miners, Minnie the barmaid (Meagan Miller) is the personification of hope for a new life. For Sheriff Jack Rance (Simon Neal) and the gold miners, she embodies their hopes and dreams. But then a stranger with a dark past arrives (Gaston Rivero as Dick Johnson), threatening the camp’s order. La fanciulla del West (The Girl from the Golden West) was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and was premiered there in 1910. As he did with La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, Puccini creates a richly contoured world for his Wild West opera, complete with its own atmospheric musical idiom. With La fanciulla del West, Puccini innovated with a through-composed, large-scale musical form, in which he moved seamlessly from duets to musical dialogue. In doing so, he distanced himself from traditional Italian opera and focusing more on the psychological expressiveness of his music.

Singing For Two: Experiencing Pregnancy as a Classical Singer by Catherine Marie Gardner A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Catherine Marie Gardner 2017 Singing for Two: The Experience of Pregnancy for the Classical Singer Catherine Gardner Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2017 Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand more fully the experience of pregnancy for the classical singer. Though research has uncovered the physical implications of pregnancy for the non-singer, aspects which can impact the classical singer, such as breath mechanics, hormonal fluctuations, and the many other physical changes brought on by pregnancy, have not been fully investigated. My first objective was to find out how the physical aspects of pregnancy impact singers as they continue to perform through these changes. My second objective was to discover what the emotional implications of pregnancy are for the classical singer. Did emotional changes instigated by pregnancy occur that influenced the singer’s performance anxiety, routine and sense of self as a performer? My final objective was to investigate the social implications of pregnancy for the classical singer. How are pregnant classical singers viewed and treated within the performance realm? Is there support for singers who become pregnant? What are the implications for career trajectory and timing? !ii This study uses mixed methods to enhance and expand the range of information gathered. In- depth interviews were conducted on two pregnant and one recently pregnant classical singers.

Annual Report 2013–14 1 2 Introduction 4 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 5 2013–14 Season Repertory & Events 12 2013–14 Artist Roster 14 The Financial Results 47 Patrons 1 Introduction The Metropolitan Opera’s 2013–14 season featured an extraordinary number of artistic highlights, while the company continued to address the significant financial challenges of grand opera. The Met presented six new productions during the 2013–14 season, including the Met premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys, the first new opera developed through the company’s co-commissioning program with Lincoln Center Theater. The season also saw the first Met performances in nearly 100 years of Borodin’s Prince Igor. Along with four revivals, all six new productions were presented in movie theaters around the world as part of the Met’s Live in HD series, which earned $26.2 million. Combined earned revenue for the Met (Live in HD and box office) totaled $117 million. While enjoying great artistic successes, the company faced challenging economic hurdles, ending with a deficit after five years of break-even or close to break-even results. However, contract negotiations with the Met’s unions, still in process at the end of the fiscal year, resulted in cost reductions to help ensure a more sustainable financial model for the future. At the start of the 2013–14 season, Music Director James Levine made a highly anticipated—and enormously successful—return to the Met after two years away due to injury. His return on the second night of the season to conduct Mozart’s Così fan tutte was rapturously received, as were his performances leading Robert Carsen’s new production of Verdi’s Falstaff.

Ms. Miller steps in to sing the title role in the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s concert version of Ariadne auf Naxos in mid-October before taking the role to China with Oper Leipzig in her debut at the Beijing Music Festival, and to Poland, where she makes her debut with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Additional season highlights include her role and company debut as the Marschallin in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier with Opera Wroclawska in December.
